  1. my son was doing this and we were told it is called expressive language delay. we were told to teach on many levels and not just to what he seemed to learn from. so now everything is taught to all learning styles. i think more review is helping him.
  2. we have some of those items..... the bucket balance is great. kids love it. use it alot. the cubes are okay. Ours are hard to put together. some are easy to click together, others are near impossible even for me. I hope that the more we play with them, the easier they will become to put together. as for the car.....one thing my kids like are the Travel Tangoes that RR sells, The Rubicks twist toy and auto bingo :-)
  3. my sister and I both had strep monthly as kids and once the tonsils were out never again in childhood! I did have strep throat last year but it's been 17 years since I had my tonsils out! not bad, lol. but it seems that *most* people stop having strep throat so often. but it's not a guarantee.
  4. doing it now with my son and will repeat with my daughter, OPGTTR MUS-Alpha ETC (probably 4, 5, 6) HWT (grade 1 and 2 books) FLL bible devotions Easy Classical Science(grade 2- Earth science)
  5. ok, this is the only joke I know. It cracked up my 3 y/o, but who knows, a 5 y/o might appreciate it too. Knock Knock who's there? Cargo Cargo who? Car go beep beep! :-)
  6. I agree but I did find if you change your display options in the posts you can view it kinda like the old posts. Only thing is you need to do this in the post to change it. so go into a post and near the top is a Display option. You can choose it to show our 'old' way at the top and then you can open other messages IF you want. it's not perfect though.....you still have to open the original post. and yes, I am spending less time browsing the boards now.
  7. My son has good handwriting to be a 6yo boy! He's done HWT 2nd grade book already, so now he does the MP Copybook 1. He loves it. We do not do it everyday. I look at his ETC book and see what pages have writing, and compare it to the FLL book and what needs writing and any days that are 'light' or have no writing, then he does the copybook. It's about 2 days a week he works in that. He likes it and he transitioned from HWT to the traditional 3 line format no problems since it had the first page as copying the letters as well. so for us he has copywork in other areas, and we only do copywork from a book when no other subject is offering it.
  8. I looked at the LLB level 2, but did not like enough to buy it for 2nd grade in the fall. We will be using easyclassical.com 's 2nd grade science schedule. While my kids fall in the K-2 category, we already have Apologia's Astronomy book/lab kit and will be using some of that as well since the schedule gives it for the 2-4 crowd. We are using the grade 1 science schedule this year and are very pleased. Both kids enjoy the lessons. It's laid out for two days a week for reading/activities, but most weeks can be done in 1 day if you prefer. And with multiple grade breakdown it's easy to do more....just read from another level :-)
  9. We have gas heat and in the day it's set at 68. we have horrible drafts from the windows(some with no curtains to help) and it's chilly in here. Even me, who's always hot/sweating, is cold this winter! I had it at 66 at night, but dh complained so much I moved it up to 68 as well. I wish we could keep it lower, but the kids and dh are cold. (isn't that they make sweater/sweatshirts?)
  10. I didn't want to do school today myself, lol. But I got math and some phonics in for both kids. And my week now planned out ;-) So it counts right?
  11. Well, I am a planner in real life. So I started making lists for school as well. First I made an excel sheet with our year to year goals. So as I find books for the next grade(or older) I put it in that grade year so I don't go researching a thousand things...I usually have one or two listed so when the time comes it's easier to research and I already eliminated ones that we wouldn't use. Then I have our current year goals. I pretty much have one book per subject to work through. some subjects have more than one book(like ETC). Then I do another sheet with week by week lesson plans so I can make sure I get it all done by end of the year. We are 'behind' this year in that we started in July and won't be done until June at the rate we are moving. but it's ok. Since it's on the computer, I just adjust our weekly dates and I am no longer behind, LOL!!! This also helps when come Monday(like today) when I did not pull anything out yesterday to write down in my planner what we plan to actually do. My pencil planner is done each week to record what we did each day and keeps track of school days done. this is my curiosity and not for the system. I like to do this before we start the week but sometimes it happens during school ;-) It's all type A planning, but I like my excel sheets and they do keep me on track. Like today when I don't wanna do school but I know if I don't then we will be schooling through July, lol, and we really want to take a LONG camping trip so I HAVE to get done before July, lol. but the short story is I look at the year, then break up the book into 36-40 weeks of lessons, then break it down by days in the week. hope this helps,
  12. I am using Easy Classical for this year and LOVE it. I don't see it mentioned here often, but she follow TWTM book guidelines. The intro asks you to read WTM. So she is following the guidelines from the book. We are doing 1st grade science(Animals, Plants, Human Body). It came with a weekly schedule and weekly file dividers. The schedule itself has been broken down for several ages. Usually K-2, 2-4, 4-6. It has different spine books for each level, but if you had kids in different categories it is obviously ok to use just one spine. The activities for the K-2 are just right. fun, but educational enough. It also has a shopping list and library list at the bottom of the page so you know what to get for the next week. The website also has links to all the books they require at the best price. We do plan to use them again for next year. I do wish they offered the plans in an eBook format for cheaper, but it's been worth the money and I am pleased. They also offer full grade lesson plans, but for now we are just using the science series that can be bought alone. Highly recommend this schedule. It has questions under the reading/activity sections for review(and the answers!). Very complete program and IMHO perfect for the elementary ages. http://www.easyclassical.com/
  13. that could be a few reasons. *if the battery isn't holding a charge it would die while driving. *fuel pump related thing I have driven two cars that stopped while driving(both while 17, scary!). one was OLD, one was new. Sorry, but you need to get the mechanic to troubleshoot. Glad you were able to get off the road safely!
  14. We went in December. I got on the http://www.mousesavers.com/ email list a few months before going. This site has tons of info to go cheaper. We decided to stay off site in a condo so we could do breakfast/dinner there for less money and just eat lunch in the parks(limit of $40 for 2 adults/2 kids). Compared to friends who stay onsite/get the meal plan/use public transportation....we went way less. over a $1000 less than if we had done it their way. So consider all your options. My understanding on the unexpired ticket thing is to bring it with you and it's good. I personally would call the WDW 800 # to verify before going. they are very helpful people ! have fun!
  15. Hi, I am Tess and I homeschool my two kids, Ds, just turned 6, and Dd, 4. Ds is K by the ps standard, but I filed him as 1st grade this year. He is ahead a year in math....and reading on a 4th grade level now. I struggle to find books he can read and still have appropriate subject matter/language. He is also into K'nex and builds the most amazing things! Dd is preK, but already reading and doing math...I suspect she will catch up if not surpass her brother next year. She doesn't like to be 'behind' her brother in anything. She is taking ballet but IMHO more suited for aggressive sports and hope she will ask to play a sport next year ;-)
  16. We are considering some summer day camps for our 6 y/o this summer and what I have done to decide *who* to go through is visit in the summer while camps are going on to see what they are doing. Then I can kinda see if they are doing the 'learning' advertised or just sitting around. I would think calling the person in charge of the program and asking very direct questions would help you decide too on the right program. Good luck and hope it's fun!
  17. We are starting SOTW Ancient in the fall as well with a 6.5 and 5 y/o. I was advised to do it three days straight and use the other two days of the week for science. So we plan to read some, listen to the CDs some and do some activities. hope this helps!
  18. I have two close in age here, only 20 months apart and in ps they would have been back to back grades. So while things are separate now, in another 2 years most subjects will be the same level :-) And then it will be so much easier (i hope!)
