A home for their hearts
This is the first chapter book I've read aloud to my dc that at least one of them kept asking me to read more! I was pleasently surprised, she never wanted me to put it done. This has never happen before when I've read a chapter book. Any suggestions as to what to read next? I really would like something that would grab their attention and have them asking for more!
PeterPan
Have you tried Dr. Doolittle? Have you used the listings in the early SL cores?
PeterPan
My dd adds to look at Ginger Pye and the sequels (Moffats, etc.). They're very funny.
Mom0012
I think Mrs. Piggle Wiggle is a really fun choice. My kids also really enjoyed the first Boxcar Children book, The Little House on the Prairie books, and the My Father's Dragon series. woolybear
How about A Tarantula In My Purse ? It isn't a chapter book. It is short stories. My kids loved it and have had me read some of it again. And again. :)
Emilylou
My kids loved Mr Popper's Penguin's. They have also liked: Little House in the Big Woods Stuart Little Charlotte's Web All of Thorton Burgass Animal books- The Adventures of Reddy Fox, Chatterer the Squirrel, Jerry Muskrat, Danny Meadow Mouse and Grandfather Frog. I can't remember why now... but I didn't care for Mr Doolittle. These also are their 1st chapter books. HTH

CactusPair
We've been loving all the SL K books this year. All their early cores are great. There's also Charlotte's Web, Little House in the Big Woods, Miss Hickory, and my favorite book I've read in a long time, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Toulane by Kate DiCamillo. Oh, last year my dc loved The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich. That was really good.
eternalknot
My 8 & 3 year olds LOVED Mr. Popper's Penquins :) another favorite of theirs was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. My 8 year old also really enjoyed Sarah, Plain & Tall; he has re-read it several times since our initial read-aloud. He also liked Mrs. Frisby & the Rats of NIMH, but that one didn't hold the interest of my younger. Welcome to the wonderful world of read-alouds! It's definitely our favorite part of the day. nmoira
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Fleming is a great read-aloud, and nothing like the movie.
Mama2Three
I'll add Boxcar Children to the list that you've already been given. My DC are crazy for the series.
Harriet Vane
Ds saw the title to this thread and asked me to post on his behalf. He says: "I've read Popper's Penguins! It was good!"
whitestavern
I'll add this to the other great selections: The Enormous Egg...especially if you have boys!
Haiku
I'll second the recommendation of Pippi Longstocking, and I'll also recommend Socks, by Beverly Cleary. It's very, very sweet. Tara
Jackie in NE
Well, "O Best Beloved" we are thoroughly enjoying Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories. Very entertaining, and we're also finding great material for memorization in the great poems sprinkled throughout the book.
lmrich
Now that your kids like read alouds, I would encourage you to start listening to books on cd/tape in the car. My kids LOVE them. I am amazed how much time we are actually in the car and that we finish a book every couple of days. We are currently listening to the Ramona series and have been howling with laughter, and we finished the Incredible Journey of Edward Tulane and I bawled so hard I had to reapply my make-up. Of course keep reading outloud. My daughter and I are reading The Little Princess this week.
kalanamak
Owls in the Family. Little House in the Big Woods. Henry and the Paper Route. Maroo of the Winter Caves. These were hits after MPP.
Jen in PA
Everything already mentioned sounds great! I'd add LeGuin's Catwings books, anything Narnia, anything Oz, George's Secret Key to the Universe (by Hawking), the entire Cat Club series (by Esther Averill), and Just So Stories. Al of these have big big hits here over the past few months.
Annie Laurie
I'd add LeGuin's Catwings books I gave these to my dd for silent reading time and she loved them and read them each twice through. They are great beginning chapter book readers, and I'm sure they're good as a read aloud too. Come to think of it, I bet my 4 year old would love to hear them. linders
We love Popper here, too! Other suggestions... Paddington Bear stories (we have a wonderful treasury) Charlotte's Web Stuart Little Mouse and Motorcycle Cricket in Times Square My Father's Dragon (and sequels) Any of the Thornton Burgess books (like Old Mother West Wind) Wizard of Oz Pinocchio (the original, not Disneyfied) I'm sure you'll get a lot of good ideas! angela in ohio
My favorite: Swiss Family Robinson Andrew Pudewa recommends Summer of the Monkeys as one of the best read-alouds ever (it would be funny, like Popper.)
