I need a new vacuum - recommendations?

So we've been using our trusty shop vac as our household vacuum for the past 10 years. :-) We did a lot of renovation that's finally just about finished. The shop vac is making a horrible noise and I'm getting sick of lugging it around and only being able to vacuum a tiny piece of carpet at a time.

We have mostly tile and hardwood with some room sized rugs as well.

I just went on amazon to look at vacuums and there are so many options! I don't want to spend a million dollars and I just want something that does a decent job.

Anyone have a favorite, non million dollar vacuum they recommend?

Love my Miele, and really, it wasn't all that pricey.  Maybe compared to the real cheapos, but I had a couple of them and they were an example of false economy.  Certainly my Miele was half the price of a Dyson at the time.  I've had mine around 10 years.

well, if we are comparing all vacuums to a million dollars, they all fit the bill!    Even a Rainbow Vac is only $2000.

Right now we have a central Vac and I really love it, BUT, our trusty Hoover was great for years and Consumer Reports still rates Hoovers very highly.

I want a small stick Vac and wanted a Dyson but the price tag is high.  I went to CR and the Hoover is less than half the price and rated higher.

Oh, be careful with Dyson. Our cleaning lady would only use her Dysons - one or the other was always broken, and neither picked stuff up well. I asked that she use our Kenmore canister vac instead. I could always tell when she used her Dysons. Maybe her two were both lemons, but they were disappointing for sure.

Had and loved my original Sears Progressive. The second one was a disappointment. Planned on going with a Dyson, but read the reviews on the super cheap Shark Navigator Pro. Bought one and loved it. Eventually we broke it because, well large families specialize in breaking vacuums, and got a second!

I agree. I do not like my Dyson. My Bissell works better.

I bought this Panasonic canister vac a little over a year ago and really like it.  I took a good long look at Miele's, but didn't see anything about them that the Panasonic didn't have.  And our house at the time had a central vac system, so I really just needed something for quick clean ups and couldn't justify spending the extra for a Miele.  Now we're in a house with hardwoods and carpet (and no central vac system) and I'm still really liking the Panasonic.  The bags are spendy (about $10 each) but they're by far the best vacuum bags I've ever used as far as containing dust.

I have the same one and absolutely love it. My favorite vacuum ever.

We have a Shark rocket ultralight upright. I've liked it better than our Dyson. I didn't pick it out, my mom gave it to me, but it has served us well so far.

There are a few annoying things about it but I like how easily I can get under things with the long wand.

Roomba 800 series is awesome. Pricey, and I've had to replace a $60 charger at just over a year of (very hard) use, but I still love it. Love how it does it's work mostly without my interference, and how it gets under couches and beds so well.

The Shark Navigator has also been very reliable for us for carpeted areas. Not as good for smooth floors, and we've gotten rid of all the carpet in the house, so I don't use it much any more.

Update on the Orek I bought

I was in the same boat, my old windtunnel and my old canister vac were dying and it was the worst, they were heavy, bulky, etc.

I read a thousand reviews and ended up buying an Orek Commercial on amazon for $171.

It came yesterday and I immediately vacuumed the house!!  It is SO lightweight, did a fantastic job and going from flooring to carpet it still worked like a charm.  And it is small enough to do the stairs (mostly).  I am madly in love with it.
