DawnM
and we are at a hotel, moving my son into his apartment on campus today. I will be 100% worthless. I couldn't even walk much last night. It is a tad better this am, I can at least walk, but I can't bend. I have thrown my back out before, but never this bad! I have put some icy hot stuff on it, taken ibuprofen, and am still in a world of pain. We are staying on the beach. I had a lovely beach walk yesterday and wanted to go out this am to walk, but that isn't happening. I plan to get a heating pad thing today when we go to the store. Any other suggestions I can do while not at home?
school17777
So sorry! Do you have a Tens unit at home? If not, I’d consider getting one to help with your pain. You can get them at Walmart, CVS, etc.
happi duck
Last time I threw out my lower back what helped the most was ice and walking. Eta: I also used Salonpas patches Edited September 8, 2018 by happi duck
itsheresomewhere
Does the hotel have a hot tub? That would help. There are these wonderful patches in a red box that provide light heat for up to 8 hours. You wear them under you shirt. Hands down one of the best things. unsinkable
I'm sorry, Dawn. I hope (somehow) you're feeling better as the day goes on.
DawnM
I got a heat patch and will hit the hot tub before bed. It is a little better today, but still not great.
Catwoman
What rotten luck. ? I’m so sorry about your back. I hope it feels much better soon. I don’t envy you the ride back home if your back is still hurting because you’ll be dreading every little bump in the road. Praying for a speedy recovery!!!
Lizzie in Ma
That stinks, I hope you feel better soon. I second the TENS unit, best purchase I ever made. Tiger balm is good too.
Carol in Cal.
I find TENS so irritating that it does more harm than good. Would your PCP prescribe muscle relaxers over the phone? When my back is really bad, taking those at night helps more than anything else.

I was starting to think I was the only one who found the tens unit made things worse.
PrincessMommy
If it's that bad I would go to the CVS clinic and get some prescription muscle relaxers. I went through this about a 3 weeks ago... it was awful. Ice and then heat... is good too.
katilac
Don't throw your back out, you're going to need it later. I crack myself up ? If I hurt my back, especially if there are any spasms, I need to lie down on a hard, flat surface like a non-carpeted floor. As long as I can, as often as I can. Also heating pad or patches. When it's really bad or persistent, I need to take a muscle relaxer. Usually just one, the relaxing seems to reset things for me. If I try to power through it, I just aggravate it and cause all kinds of problems with overcompensating, etc. I realize this doesn't help you now, but mild yoga has done wonders for my persistent back problems. It is better in my 50s than it was in my 20s!

DawnM
Home now. Put tiger balm on it and have my electric heating pad on. It is better, but still really hurts.
Catwoman
I was hoping it would be much better today. I’m glad you’re home so you can (hopefully) be more comfortable.
RootAnn
Checking in to see how you are doing today, @DawnM. Hope you are feeling better.
Liz CA
Unfortunately my experience with something similar (muscle spasms) was that no matter what it lasted a few days. I used mainly heat because ice felt worse. Lying flat provided the most relief.

It still was hurting fairly badly yesterday. Today is the first day I have felt like it is *almost* back to normal. Whew! 2
Catwoman
I hope it keeps getting better! Be careful not to over-estimate how well you’re doing and end up doing too much too quickly. I would hate to see you re-injure yourself.

And this is sooo important and so hard because after days of sitting on either ice or heating pads, there is a lot to do...
