Ann.without.an.e
I have pondered this for years. I am considering making it homemade to save money. Does anyone here do this? I would love your tried and true mix or recipe. Also, do you use a bread machine or just do it by hand. Funny, before we were GF I made all of our breads homemade. I have never attempted this gluten free.
Soror
I have tried more recipes than I can remember the only ones I make now are Bob Redmill gf breadmix, oh that yummy yeasty smell! And Elena's pantry paleo bread 2.0.
caedmyn
http://www.paleoeffect.com/paleo-diet-recipes/fluffy-paleo-wheat-bread/ This one is good. I use tapioca starch instead of arrowroot and 6 whole eggs instead of 4 plus 4 egg whites, and sunflower oil and regular vinegar.
caedmyn
I've also made this with various gf flours...https://fedup.com.au/recipes/other-recipes-and-hints/gluten-free-bread Except the recipe I have calls for 1.5 tsp of baking soda and 2 tsp of cream of tartar instead of the yeast. It makes a taller loaf than the other one I linked to.
AnniePoo
Pamela’s bread mix. Don’t even bother with anything else.
Critterfixer
I've made a few kinds of GF bread. It's hardly worth the effort because it tastes so good that the non-GF people in my house eat it all up before a day has passed. :glare: I use the yeast bread recipes that America's Test Kitchen has in their GF cookbooks. ETA: I mix it by hand. Don't own a bread machine. Edited January 18, 2018 by Critterfixer

I've always wanted to try the popovers though, they look so cool.
IfIOnly
No, because we're also DF and EF. :(
JudoMom
When we were gluten free, I used Pamela's mix in our breadmaker.

Ann.without.an.e
Pamela’s bread mix. Don’t even bother with anything else. We love their baking mix and this is what really got me to thinking about making my own bread. Do you know they have a 25# bag of the bread mix on Amazon S&S and it comes out to less than $2 per pound? https://www.amazon.com/Pamelas-Products-Gluten-Bread-25-Pound/dp/B0028VAS8S/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1516307432&sr=8-2&keywords=pamelas%2Bbread%2Bmix%2B25%23&th=
Ann.without.an.e
So I was eyeing this.... https://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-BB-PAC20-Virtuoso-Breadmaker-setting/dp/B0067MQM48/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1516308078&sr=8-2&keywords=zojirushi+bb-pac20 Is it worth the $$? I am tired of spending so much on GF bread. For real, ifI can get the Pamela's so cheap on amazon and I use this, it will pay for itself pretty quick.

After reading Sparkly's link (thank you so much for that , SU!), I looked on Craigslist and am picking up a bread maker for $20 tonight. It had good reviews on Amazon. I vote look for something used. Katy
Pamelas mix is the best.
SparklyUnicorn
I will say looking at the ingredient's list, it's no wonder GF bread is so expensive. You might not find that you can save a whole lot of money doing it yourself.
Granny_Weatherwax
How much bread are you buying a week? How many people in your family are GF? Are non-GFers eating the GF bread? Can the bread items be switched with something else like gluten free white corn tortillas?
Granny_Weatherwax
There are such things! Here for example: http://www.forkandbeans.com/2014/01/01/gluten-free-vegan-bread/ Did you see the nutritional info for this recipe? Calories for the loaf 2168. The recipe says it makes ten slices. That's a lot of calories for one slice of bread (217). --- The thing I have found with GF baking is this: many people formulate their own recipes that work only by following the recipe exactly. Some minor changes can be made but temps, measurements, amount of liquid, etc usually must be exact. I'm not trying to be a naysayer nor am I trying to persuade you from making your own GF bread. I've just found it interesting that so many people have individualized recipes and then blog about how they had to make multiple loaves before creating a recipe that worked two times in a row. bethben
I have found a pretty good GF bread at Costco. I think it's less than $4 a loaf. Small loaf, but it's pretty decent for GF bread.
aaplank
There are many good recipes out there but this King Arthur one I've had the best luck in my gluten free bread maker. I love this bread machine! Oster 2 lb. Bread Maker with Gluten-Free Setting https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004DPHKBA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_STQyAbEJWE35E Just be sure to add the extra egg in the recipe if you make it in a bread machine. https://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/gluten-free-sandwich-bread-recipe
poppy
Pamela's 100%. Tried about 6 others, and Pamela's is the best. My GF husband's favorite is the sweet bread (directions on back of bread mix bag). Its not very sweet, but has a nice airy texture. We use the bread machine. White bread setting.
