MEmama
I've never bought a doll before, but apparently my 3yo niece wants one for Christmas and I get to pick it out! As excited as I am, of course I have no idea where to start. Ideas? Suggestions? Links? Thanks! :)
alisoncooks
For a 3 year old, I might go with a baby doll. One with a soft body...and some accessories (think bottle, blanket, clothes, etc). Unless your niece is "into" something (like a t.v. show or movie) and would want a themed doll. For example or this. Or maybe just go to Toys R Us or Target and wander the doll section. It's pretty insane, the variety, LOL. Just look and see if any "speak" to you. :) Edited December 10, 2016 by alisoncooks
Um_2_4
And of course this book is cute to include with any doll present (I remember it from my childhood and my girls have it) :https://smile.amazon.com/Little-Mommy-Golden-Book/dp/0375848207/ref=pd_sim_21_8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3S1ZZGH1BM15FC0QM105
ondreeuh
There are some nice baby dolls that can wear newborn baby clothes like the JC "Lots to Cuddle" 20" doll. I would get one of those and hit up the thrift store for a doll wardrobe. :)
Ellesmere
Yes, Melissa and Doug baby or a princess doll would work.Corolle has a lot of options. There are also Our Generation dolls at Target if you don't want a baby doll.
Hobbes
We have LOVED this doll and have three of them: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00AGI2SVA/ref=psdcmw_3245219011_t1_B00R7P7XVA. Small enough for a little one to cuddle, real enough to grow with a child. My 7yo still adores hers, which she got at age 2. For our boys, we've bought the "bath friendly" version in case it gets wet. Very durable, but nice to hug.

Cinder
A neighbor gave dd a baby doll when she was little and her favorite accessory was the doll stroller--similar to this one.

Fits in a little umbrella stroller, too.

Forgot you can buy real diapers, diaper bag, baby carrier and cute shoes (the soft leather kind) and socks for it.

IfIOnly
Sorry, also forgot they do sell them at Wal-Mart and other stores like Toysrus. I've seen the black and white ones at Wal-Mart for $10 less than Amazon. The Asian and Hispanic babies might be harder to find and need to be ordered online.
lynn
I don't know your price point but my dd loved her corolle dolls. I also got her a melissa and doug diaper bag dd and her friends loved playing with that for years. Have fun shopping.
MEmama
Thanks to everyone! I ended up getting this doll: http://www.habausa.com/clara-doll.html It's a German company, and I just fell in love with how adorable they are. I think they must remind me of my own childhood dolls with their sweet, simple outfits. Shopping for girls is fun! :) Edited December 11, 2016 by MEmama

Oh, how she loved that baby!
