medawyn
My #3 (7 months) is a light sleeper compared to my other two; louder household noises can wake him, as well as sibling noises if he's on the edges of sleep. Part of me is longing for more sleep and wonders if a white noise machine might help. The other part of me wonders if that just sets up bad future habits. Thoughts and experiences from the Hive? Rosie_0801
When it comes to sleeping babies, whatever works RIGHT NOW is the best thing to do.
Guest
No, I use them in my kids' rooms who are older and in my room too! They're wonderful. It covers so many road noises, getting dressed din, bathroom ablutions, and other things that disrupt those still sleeping.
sbgrace
I used white noise machines when my kids were babies. I started pretty young because one was such a light sleeper. Even the central air kicking on and off woke him. They still have them in their rooms, actually--12 years later! ETA: I took white noise with me to college. I don't remember when I started using one growing up. But lots of people sleep with fans or other background noise. We have the faint sound of the kids now, but none directly in our bedroom. I can sleep without, but I do prefer sounds. I don't think it's a life impediment! Edited December 4, 2016 by sbgrace
bibiche
If you don't want to invest in a machine you can find lots of hours long white noise videos on YouTube. That's what we use here.
zyxwvut
We use fans. The white noise things drive me crazy, but the constant sound of the fan doesn't bother me.
MyLife
Both of my children have noise machines in their bedrooms. We started using them because we lived in a small house on a busy street. White noise actually drives me insane, so we use the ocean sounds, which is very relaxing. We purchased one machine at Brookstone for an insane amount of money. The second machine came from Target and was much more reasonable. When we travel, we use an app on a tablet.
lynn
We use fans here also.
SparklyUnicorn
We had one. It was a life saver. I had a colicky baby and that helped. He used it even as a toddler. Don't know what kind of future problems you are worried about. Even some adults like to have white noise. I like fans myself.
Gentlemommy
Even if it starts a 'bad habit' of needing white noise, what harm can come of it? White noise machines are tiny and can travel anywhere. Heck, you can even get a free app on a phone for one. Everyone has a sleep association-swaddling, pacifier, nursing, dark room, bath, etc. What would be the harm in a white noise machine? It's not making her dependent on anyone else, and is going to allow her to sleep for longer...do it! Clearly, we are big fans of the white noise here lol. For our foster son, I crank that sucker up super loud. He's had it on when he sleeps since he came home from the hospital, and now when he hears it he just starts closing his eyes lol. It's traveled with us and actually helps him have something familiar in a new environment. We have three other kids and three dogs, so a noise canceling thing is necessary. zoobie
Ours is in the hallway so it dampens the other-house noise without being in the room. White noise machines irritate the crap out of me and my crankiest child. I like a fan on to sleep, and we have those in all the bedrooms, but our hallway is super creaky. The noise machine outside the closed door works. It's annoying when you're in the hallway, but it disappears when you close the door. Guest
I don't know what we would've done without them. We still have them in the kids rooms. I use a rain sound one on my iPhone myself. :)
summerreading
You could get an air filter and at least it's useful. We use fans in the summer, filter in the winter.
Mothersweets
I have one - I use it for my grandson when he naps at my house - and I love it. Sometimes I turn it on for me, I use the ocean waves sound and it's so relaxing. This is the one I have My Baby sound spa portable

StephanieZ
Get a room HEPA filter. Good for health, and a great white noise machine.
Kareni
My husband has a nature sounds machine that he uses nightly. I'll admit that when he's out of town, I turn it on. It does a good job of hiding most of the house creaking noises that would otherwise have me jumping. His machine has ten sounds such as the ocean, rain, crickets chirping, and more. It is, I think, an older model of this one: Conair Sound Therapy Sound Machine Regards, Kareni

freesia
You all have talked me into it. Santa is bringing baby a white noise machine for Christmas. Mommy needs more sleep!I'm glad you are. I wanted to say that my last three all had white noise played while the napped and when they first went to sleep and it didn't cause any habits that needed to be broken. At some point with each I just stopped using it and it was not an issue.(but like someone said-even if it had been, you need the baby to sleep!) Tangerine
Just stopping by to make sure someone mentioned the white noise machine for white noise connoisseurs, the DOHM. And indeed they had! It's not incredibly loud if you have a small house and a lot of noise (like myself), but the sound is lovely.
