ok, now that most states [all?] have completed their ballot of official candidates, there appear to be SEVEN candidates w/ viable candidacies.

SEVEN people who could actually be elected.

Of those seven, SIX have access to over 500 Electoral Votes.

all info from http://www.thegreenpapers.com/G08/President-Details.phtml

So I figger a poll based around those viable candidates would be interesting.

I'll add an 8th option of "voting for the non-viable candidate cuz i think they are just worth it" category too :D

I did notice that Nevada has a "None of these candidates" option --that is Very Cool.

Here's a list of the viable candidates --you can peruse it while i get the poll set up :)

President/Vice-President ~Party~ possible electoral votes

John McCain/ Sarah Palin -Republican Party- 538

Barack Obama/ Joe Biden -Democratic Party- 538

Ralph Nader/ Matt Gonzalez -Independent- 531

Cynthia McKinney/ Rosa Clemente -Green Party- 528

Bob Barr/ Wayne A. Root -Libertarian Party- 527

Chuck Baldwin/ Darrell L. Castle -Constitution Party- 513

Brian Moore/ Stewart A. Alexander -Socialist Party- 270

Other Third Party Candidate

Didn't they used to not list the parties on the ballots? I think I remember that from the first election I voted in; I they should go back to that. I wonder how that would change results? ;)

In TX, I think they will list the party if they file by a certain time [or are R/D, lol]. Libertarians are actually on the ballot in TX. The others will be listed separately as write-in candidates that are legally filed w/ the state election office. Any other write-in vote for a candidate that hasn't filed would be tossed completely.

There are a few other parties/candidates running on the ballot in TX [and other states --you can see all the separate states in that greenpapers link] --I only listed the ones w/ access to 270 electoral votes ;)

Obama - Biden

I really don't have much of a 'beef' with McCain....and I worry that he's too "gung ho military" ... but the real scare for me is Sarah Palin. I can NOT take a chance that she would end up being president of the US!! :willy_nilly:

I was on the fence, as some of you may remember, and I was waiting for a VP pick before I made my final decision. She is the real deal breaker for me. Had he picked anyone else, I may have changed my mind.

NC doesn't allow them on the ballot until a petition of over 100,000 supporting signatures is submitted. Libertarian is the only 3rd party option on our ballots, and our Libertarian candidate for governor is not allowed to debate the Rep. and Dem. candidates.

I was a much bigger advocate for 3rd party voting last election. Back then, there seemed to be a bigger grassroots movement of people deliberately choosing 3rd parties as a protest vote, if not for a actual political preference.

I will vote for Libertarian candidates whenever they are on our NC ballot... except possibly for the presidency. I'm still undecided on that, and whether I can vote for a Libertarian as a protest vote.

I hate NC laws. I wish all candidates were allowed to be on a ballot so we could get a truer sense of the desires of the voters.

For the purposes of the poll I clicked "Baldwin/Castle" because that is how I would vote if I could. Last election I voted Libertarian for the presidential race because they were the closest fit to my ideals. This year I don't know...I've heard things about Bob Barr that really don't appeal to me. I may end up voting for only local races.

Laura, there was one debate between Mike Munger and Pat McCrory. Bev Perdue was invited, but chose not to participate. It was interesting to watch because McCrory and Munger didn't disagree about much, and where they disagreed they did it politely and as though they each understood where the other was coming from. They had some fun at Perdue's expense, though. They both answered several questions from the moderator by saying something like "Well, it's really too bad the Lt. Gov. wasn't able to be with us tonight because I know she has strong opinions on issue X that she'd like folks to know. But since she isn't here, let me tell you what I believe we should do about issue X."

Anyway, at this point I can't in good conscience vote for either Obama or McCain, so it's hard to know what to do.

yeah -- besides the R, D, and L parties, it looks like the only 3d party write ins on your ballot are Moore, McKinney, and Nader.....

another reason to live in TX :D

She's the one who slugged a W'ton D.C. police officer who tried to stop her from entering the capitol building when she wasn't wearing her proper ID (I believe it was a lapel pin). He didn't recognize her right off the bat and tried to stop her, she hit him, he arrested her, it was a big to do. She gotta away with it, too.

I KNEW I recognized her name, but I couldn't figure out why!!

I remember that incident (local news for us, so to speak)

Thanks for mentioning it!

I can't vote for Obama or McCain while still being true to my personal preferences regarding the proper role of government. I'm a Libertarian, but Barr isn't really so I'll probably vote for Baldwin just because he's the closest to what I want. I'm not really excited about Baldwin, though, because I disagree with him on a couple of key issues.

I wish everybody who doesn't really love McCain or Obama would vote third party this time just to send a message that there are more options than Dem or Rep.

I'm probably voting McCain and that's what I voted in this poll. I had thought about the constitution party. My thought is that if a lot of us in the middle place 3rd party votes, we are going to split up the electorial votes. The people in those other brackets really don't have a chance of winning unless someone really makes some kind of surprise upswing.

So, wouldn't that end up swinging the votes a way that many of us would not be very happy about?

Just asking?

I love the idea of none of these. Sorry guys, NONE of you get our electoral votes! I'm not sure what I'm doing yet. I'm tempted to just stay home, but I think a 3rd party vote would make more of an impact than staying home. So, it'll be McCain or someone else, haven't decided yet how much I dislike Obama. Putting Palin on gives me more desire to vote for him, but I'm still unsure.

I find this so amazing that this is how some votes are based. So after typing out a response I decided to erase it and that no reply is simply the best reply in this case.

:iagree::iagree: I can't say how much I agree with this! Wouldn't that be something if this happened, I personally would be ecstatic!

I voted Baldwin because he is the closest to what I want to see for President.

That's a common sentiment and I used to feel that way, too. I've decided that the only way we will really get change (which is such a stupid buzz word right now that I cringe using it) is to change who we vote for. How can we expect to move away from what has become the status quo if we continue to vote for the status quo (Dem or Rep)?

I don't really care who wins between Obama and McCain. For me it's six of one, half a dozen of the other. They are both poor options, in my opinion, but for different reasons. The whole thing leaves me feeling rather sick with worry over the future of our country.
