texasmama
Apply Vicks Vaporub liberally on her feet and put socks on her. Also, give her a spoonful of honey. More effective than meds.

nd293
Sometimes simply propping the child up with pillows helps - create s slope from head to chest rather than simply raising the head at an angle. Good luck - I sleep lightly, and a coughing child always means a terrible night for me too!
UnionJack
I've read that bananas help... Also, our naturopath told us once to chop an onion and steam it in a bit of water. Blend it and add honey. It is surprisingly soothing. Garlic tea with honey is said to help too.
Farrar
We always do popsicles during the day, and then honey at night along with the Vick's if it's a bad one.
morningcoffee
I have found that keeping my dc's room warm during the night does help with the coughing.

Goldilocks
I got this from an old farmer who has taken this remedy since he was a child. It actually tastes good. Slice an onion into a 9x13 pan and cover with sugar. Let it sit all day. Give 1 Tablespoon of the "juice" that has seeped out.
Miss Tick
I want to second the extra pillow. Not as uncomfortable as it looks.
momtoamiracle
I use a honey based cough syrup - works really good. it's called Chestal. http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/boiron-chestal-children's-homeopathic-cough-syrup/ID=prod6000588-product also, lots of water during the day, prop up on pillows, and a humidifier in his room at night. my mom gave us onion and sugar when we were kids. You could see if you can get your kid to take it. vicks doesn't always work. I used it on my ds and I one night and we both about coughed ourselves to death. It was horrible. I would never do that again.

AnaShoo
Just an fyi - a lot of coughing is a sign of asthma. We have a son who has dealt with coughing bouts that linger longer than anyone else in the family whenever we get sick. I really thought nothing of it, but a few years into this, he finally had an actual asthmatic attack that landed us in the emergency room. It seemed to come out of nowhere, but when talking with his ped, we discussed the coughing history and she said it was a red flag. Not sure what this is just a single event or something you deal with a lot, but thought I'd throw that out there!

jenL
GOOT.This has been a godsend in our home. We rub it on chest, back, lympnodes, under the rib line, and then on our feet (and cover with socks). Garlic is a natural antibiotic. You smell like a piece of garlic bread, but it WORKS! Heidi
You can get a tiny bottle of honey and water, just for coughs, at the store for about $6! :glare: I saw that, thought "duh", went home and made my baby a bottle of chamomile/peppermint tea and honey for her cough.
