lewelma
Well, the streets are closing down in 3 hours for the set up. So we will be stuck at home for 2 days. The 3 story high wizard has been erected on the theatre and the banners are all up. Older ds is down watching the open air showing of the Return of the King tonight. A tent showcase of all the crafts used in the movie has been up for 3 days, including the weavers, leather workers, knife makers, metal workers etc. Lots to see and buy. My friend's brother got the contract for the red carpet. He has been given only 6 hours to lay it - actually nail it into the road because of the wind. My older boy's friend won the hobbit impersonation contest yesterday, and got 2 tickets to the grandstand for the opening. Unfortunately, he has to bring an adult, or he would have brought my ds. Lots of tourists and media here. We will watch the event with binoculars from our house. Ruth in NZ

Kim in Appalachia
How fun! Though, having the streets closed seems like it could be annoying, but still....my kids would be going bonkers to be so close to it all.
Night Elf
Those pictures and that video are great! DH showed me another safety video from that airline where all the people had body paint for their clothing. Fun company!

Elinor Everywhere
I am so jealous!!! I've been wanting to go to NZ since 1992, and I still haven't made it. But I will....oh yes, I will. :)

lewelma
Went down to take some pictures of the mattresses that all the fans slept on last night. It is very funny to see all the people in suits walking to work and having to step over the fans. So far, it is a beautiful day, and I mean by Wellington standards a 1 in 100 type day. calm, sunny, warm. But there is a storm coming in tonight, so it might get quite windy. I turned to my son and said "boy are they lucky, the weather looks great" and he said, "Oh, just wait 6 hours." The phrase in Wellington is "if you don't like the weather, wait an hour!" And it is so true. It was quite funny 10 years ago to see all the actresses in their skimpy attire freezing to death and having to hold their dresses down in the 40 mph winds! Pippen
Thank you so much for the reports. I'm so envious as we're long-time fans. One year I sewed Gandalf, Frodo, and Galadriel costumes for my children for Halloween. Enjoy!
lewelma
OMG!!!! There was just a low fly over by a 747! I have NEVER seen a plane fly so low and sloooooowly. It was painted with Hobbit scenes. We are up on a hill, so it was very very close to us!
lewelma
My poor older son has his martial arts class at 6pm right when the mayor is speaking. His class in on the street with the red carpet with a window looking out. He is going to have to elbow and push is way through the crowd to get to the door. Luckily, he will have a VERY good view as he is only 1/2 of a block from the Embassy Theatre.
lewelma
Only in NZ could I send my 2 children by themselves into the city with a crowd of 30,000. All the kids from the schools were heading down there at 3. They had a great time although they could not see anything. And they won a Gandalf hat!
