Dustybug
My DD6 is driving me batty with all the nasty chewing noises, because she is either trying to carry on a conversation while she has a mouthful of food or she is just chomping along without a care in the world about who can hear her. It completely grosses me out and I feel like she is old enough to do this at least more often than not. Ick.
SunD
Well, I can't stand chewing noises, so I probably reminded them more often than most do, but ... my 2yo chews properly. I would say she's perfectly capable at that age.

Carpe
My boys both chewed with their mouths closed at/by 2. 6 is plenty old enough. Be patient with her though, it's hard to break a habit.

NicksMama-Zack's Mama Too
A 66-year-old in my family still does it. Not quite what you wanted to hear?
Dustybug
A 66-year-old in my family still does it. Not quite what you wanted to hear? Ugh, no. But on a side note, I see you are from Stafford, VA! That's where I grew up and where my parents and brother still live! :)

That is the real issue. Dad does it, and Dad is awesome, so I can do it too. It will be pretty much impossible to get her to stop if he does. In the Rain
Is she stuffy? My 10yo has always been prone to sinus infections. When her nose is stuffy, or her sinuses are clogged, she starts chewing with her mouth open.

dirty ethel rackham
When I taught them that it was inappropriate and taught them how to do so. We would say to chew with their lips closed. That helped a lot.
Tap
We are working on it with dd5 right now. She glares at me when I remind her. She looks kinda like this
amo_mea_filiis.
I'm working on table manners with my dd (ELEVEN years old!). I don't think she chews with her mouth open, but she slurps, sips and swallows loudly, and has even icked a plate or 2! eww.
FLDebbie
I have a six year old who does just fine with keeping his mouth closed when he eats and an eight year old who we constantly have to remind to close his mouth. They're all different.

Mommyof4ks
That is the real issue. Dad does it, and Dad is awesome, so I can do it too. It will be pretty much impossible to get her to stop if he does. :iagree: It could be large adenoids too. My friend has a son who just has his removed, and now he can breathe through his nose, so he chews with his mouth closed finally.
KungFuPanda
My daughter had it mastered by two. My son STILL needs an occasional reminder. He's ELEVEN.
Pamela H in Texas
All of my kids have come to us eating like wild animals...literally. Totally not their fault, we understand. We are patient about it at first; but eventually, we put the remembering on them. One reminder then they are sent from the table until they can eat like a human child. It only took once or twice for them to get the point. The only difference is when the 3yo is really congested as he sometimes get. I don't worry about that as he can't really help THAT. thescrappyhomeschooler
I remind ALL the males in this house to chew with their mouths closed multiple times a day. Drives me batty!
ma23peas
:iagree: It could be large adenoids too. My friend has a son who just has his removed, and now he can breathe through his nose, so he chews with his mouth closed finally. This is exactly what I was going to say! I literally could NEVER close my mouth when I ate or sleeping!! IT felt as if I was going to suffocate, I don't think I 'realized' it when I was younger, just naturally had to do it to get breath...but at 15 had my very enlarged tonsils taken out along with my adenoids.the doctor was stunned, had never seen the size I had and asked my mom had I not had breathing problems? I remember being able to breathe at night for the first time after that surgery! Amazing change!
gardening momma
At what age, did your children chew with their mouths closed!? Not yet, but we're working on it. Dd6 is fine, and will probably learn to keep her mouth closed just from hearing me remind her sister, dd8, several times a day.
Laura Corin
This has been a long-term issue. I had to keep reminding Calvin up until he had his teeth straightened. Once his teeth fit properly inside his mouth he suddenly was able to keep his mouth shut while he chewed. Sometimes it's physiological. MissKNG
That is something I corrected very early on. Both girls don't chew or talk with their mouths full. I can't remember the exact age but I would guess around 2. They do very well with remembering now (ages 5 and 3).
chepyl
They did well most of the time by 2 or so. If they are congested. DS however has turned into a gross boy who likes to do the "see food" joke. Ugh! Little sister does amything bubby does. ;)
