Only Remembered For What We Have Done (a tiny personal story)

Recommended Posts

(The title is a name of a hymn I like.)

42 years today my father and brother, who was fresh home from Vietnam, brought birthday cupcakes my mother made to Mr. Guest's 6th grade class. It was the first week of school, and all through grade school my family brought birthday cupcakes for me. All the other kids brought bags of Toosie Pops. Those cupcakes, with candles, and my family showing up after lunch made me feel very special.

My mom and dad and brother are gone now, but I remember them for what they had done.

(And on the funny side, I completely forgot it was my BD. I woke from a dream early this morning, a dream where I was called suddenly to a room at work and it was a "surprise" party. I didn't know anyone there. It was about 10 glum looking employees I'd never met, a saggy, half-eaten cake and old couches in a windowless room. Someone handed me a greasy bag and said, "Surprise, here is your birthday fried chicken."

I woke up thinking -- how odd-- and logged onto the computer and ING Direct and my Allstate broker had sent Happy Birthday greetings. So, even though I hadn't thought a bit about it, some deep part of my brain had a sense of humor.)

:grouphug: Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! May you have a wonderful day and an even better evening.

It was truly a pleasure to finally meet you last weekend. You have a wonderful way of telling a story, especially one about family or about growing up that leaves me clamoring for more. That is a gift that I seldom encounter these days. Thank you for sharing that talent here. You also have a handsome family.:001_smile:

Love this memory! And, by the way, it was 108 degrees here in the little town that you're remembering today!:001_huh:

Your parents and brother must have had a wry sense of humor to wake you with that dream.

How else to remember one's best birthday than with an image of what would be your idea of a "worst birthday"?

I hope your day was happy.
