simka2
...to do his math under the dining room table! That just seems to be his "spot." So, far I am okay with it, because he is getting his math done. Does he need to sit at a table?:001_smile:
zenjenn
I let my kids do their schoolwork in whatever environment they choose as long as it gets done responsibly. The moment I sense goofing around, dilly-dallying, etc. it's back at the table in a chair.
dcjlkplus3
Its good, but I won't sit under the table with them, they need to come up when they need help
bookfiend
Comfortable environment = clear mind. Maybe under the table helps weed out distractions for him (like the windows). A little den under the table sounds cozy.
chickenpatty
LOL, only if you tell me it's okay for my 2nd grader to do his math test while huddled under a kiddie pool on the back porch! (He got a 100%, btw:D)

Margo out of lurking
The fun of homeschooling! My dd enjoyed doing her work in multi-colored pens, and would choose a "name of the week" to write on every single one of her papers that week. I would just encourage you to take a picture so you can remember this later!

bookfiend
I believe most children instinctively know what will facilitate their learning. They WANT to learn (when they aren't wanting to misbehave), so they create for themselves what is needed. It's hard to let go of our ideas about what learning looks like. My younger son wears headphones with music and occasionally talks out loud, my older son taps rythmically and hums - somehow it all helps them get the info in the head. I just have to stay flexible, which is hard for me.
Mommyof4ks
Perfectly fine as long as it gets done! I have one who bounces on a ball to do his work, because he can't sit still and walking while writing is dangerous.:D
extendedforecast
I don't have a problem with unconventional study areas. Like the pp, they just have to come to me for help when they need it. My oldest dd realized that a table was a must when using a compass, despite my advice to sit at the table from the beginning :P That is pretty much the only time she sits at the table for Math. What's odd is that she always sits at the table when doing writing assignments.
AEC
sounds good to me. You might suggest he do it lying flat on his tummy, or sit with a book/board in his lap to make the writing easier...but I never cared where my kids choose to do their work. bry's-gal
Well, my daughter does her best math while sitting on the toilet. It gets done quickly and correctly so I leave it be!
Tarreymere
Sounds good to me. I had one that learned phonics while dancing around the kitchen table. Nonstop. Made me dizzy, but she learned. Now she will sit, upside down sometimes, but sitting. The only problem is that she sings what she is doing REALLY LOUD. I just KNOW the ps would have recommended medication for this one. So, far I am okay with it, because he is getting his math done. Does he need to sit at a table?:001_smile: Thank you for the :001_smile:. I hadn't thought of this in some time--but one of my kiddos did this for years. Another favorite spot was in a corner between the couch and wall. I wouldn't worry about it a bit! I just provided a clipboard and called it a day.
mom2scouts
Anytime (and any place) a child is getting math done without whining works for me!
*Jen*
DS did his math upside down hanging off the couch today. The amazing thing was that his numbers were neater than they are when I force him to sit at the table ;)
Denise in Florida
Yep, sounds nice and cosy. Learning while feeling safe, snug and happy is one of the best parts of homeschooling.
Dmmetler
My 6 yr old does most of her school work lying UNDER her desk, with her chair flipped over, fiddling with it's feet! Since we do almost everything orally anyway, it's fine. I do insist that she sit at the desk for writing, though.
ChristusG
If you click on my blog link in my siggy and look at my post from 2 days ago (August 30th), you'll see photos of my daughter doing her math on top of the table LOL.

Ecclecticmum
Haven't read replies. If he's getting his math done, why not? :D For one of my daugther's subjects, she bases it around Disney's Tangled. She's "saving" the princess throughout her whole lesson  If there having fun, and doing the work, then that sounds like a big bonus :)
scrapbookbuzz
Of course it's okay. The math is getting done, isn't it? That's one of the benefits of homeschooling: study where you're comfortable!
higginszoo
My 8th grader would probably do his college courses under the table if he didn't need the computer for them. His AP Biology answers usually come out just fine from under there. He was in ps for 2 years and CAN sit at a desk all day, but under tables, on countertops, etc. are his preference.
