Anglican Communion

Anglicanism has referred to itself as the via media between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. It considers itself to be both Catholic and Reformed. Although the use of the term "Protestant" to refer to Anglicans was once common, it is controversial today, with some rejecting the label and others accepting it.

But I'm sure most people can find something to utilize instead of the word "Protestant".

Oooo.... another helpful wiki page!

List of the largest Protestant churches

List of international bodies with size:

World Methodist Council, congregational, presbyterian, reformed and united churches - 75,000,000

World Alliance of Reformed Churches - 70,000,000

Lutheran World Federation - 67,000,000

World Assemblies of God Fellowship, pentecostals (about 60,000,000)

Baptist World Alliance - (over 47,000,000)

Seventh-day Adventist Church (over 16,000,000)

The Anglican Communion is considered as a reformed Catholic Church and is not therefore, one of the protestant sects. [i think the AC would have something to say about that!]

Yes and no. There is only ONE Catholic Church, with different rites (but all under the authority of Rome.) If they are "off-shoots", then they are no longer Catholic.

Well, the off-shoots would likely still be catholic. :tongue_smilie:

Point being Eastern Catholics get no respect. I used the term branches because "rite" is rather unfamiliar to many.

Yep. Here is a good page that explains it.

There are three major groupings of Rites based on this initial transmission of the faith, the Roman, the Antiochian (Syria) and the Alexandrian (Egypt). Later on the Byzantine derived as a major Rite from the Antiochian, under the influence of St. Basil and St. John Chrysostom. From these four derive the over 20 liturgical Rites present in the Church today.

Most Americans, unless they, their parents, or their grandparents emigrated from an area where an Eastern rite was prevalent, would never be attending mass at a very traditional, non-Roman (read: Russian, Greek, Armenian, Syrian, etc.) Orthodox parish (though some do, as they are very beautiful, traditional services) simply because there is often a language barrier.

As Milovany can tell you, though, things have changed in recent years (recent - ha ha - you have to put that into Catholic context), and more Americans are "discovering" the Eastern Orthodox rites (like I said - more than one). Personally, I feel that it is partially because one can actually find a service in English! Where I used to live, the only option was Greek...

But that is a digression, because the EO churches aren't under the Pope - they have their own titular heads.

Think of it like this. Both the Orthodox and the Roman Churches started with Peter. They walked along hand in hand. At some point between the 5th and the 11th century, they looked at each other and let go of one another's hands - but they both kept walking on the same road.

Scholars have argued for hundreds of years about why they let go of one another (and who let go first). Scholars have also argued about who is walking on the right portion of the road.

But it's the same road. It's Peter's road. And, unlike many others, the Orthodox and the Romans are still pretty much the only ones walking on it.

And there is a nice graphic.

Where are you getting your information? I'm not further in the thread than the first few posts but I see issues.

Free Methodistis a holiness movement church, not Methodist. It just shares a name. It derived very much like Nazarene in timing and roots. Whoever placed it placed it incorrectly.

Anabaptist would include Mennonite Churches (more than one option).

There are likely other issues. I noticed those because I'm familiar with the churches.

I think it was from wiki. You just made the point though, by stating that it breaks down even further and further or may easily get misfiled.

That seems like a slur. :glare:

Yeah. Felt like one to me. But hey, I've been called worse.

This part is  to me--

I'll agree most of these are very borderline "Christian." They might refer to "Jesus Christ" and use the Bible in their "worship services" but for the most part they reject the historic Creeds and Councils of Christendom

I always thought 'Christian' was a term to refer to those who follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.

I didn't write the list!

Come ON people! Who on earth would honestly think I sat down and wrote all of that crap? It's off of wiki! Which is notoriously awful! Which I noted!

This thread was written to point out an absurdity and its being taken seriously?

As did I. Clearly, we are mistaken. Of course people who write commentaries and feel the need to put quotations around others' "worship services" may be suspect authorities.

It's just a list of names, not an evaluation of theology. It's the discussion of one holy Catholic Church versus hundreds, if not thousands, of non-Catholic Christian churches.

They are probably getting dissed on for not using the Nicene Creed and not following the recommendations of the Council of Nicea.

I take it to mean they use the apocrypha.

I love my Oxford Bible that includes some of the Apocrypha. Once you go Oxford you never go back baby!!
