dirty ethel rackham
According to the blog Capitol Fax, SB 136 has been withdrawn. They are still conducting a subject matter hearing today on homeschooling, but Sen. Maloney caved under the pressure. He admitted that it was poorly worded. I don't have a subscription to CF (hubby does at work so he read it to me) so I can't post a link, but it will be available for public consumption tomorrow. Round 1: Homeschoolers prevail. Let's see what else happens.

mommaduck
Good! But: The hearing has pros and cons 1) a means to educate the poor Senator and 2) a fact finding mission on the Senator's part to see how to reword the next nasty bill of attack. Hopefully the pros are enough to bury the con.

Tammyla
That's good to hear, but I think it isn't over. Each and every year here (another state), more regulations and restrictions on homeschooling are pushed over and over again. Eventually they get it through:glare:. jelbe5
Thanks for the update! :D It would be nice if people such as this would expend their energies trying to fix the current educational problems instead of coming up with new ways to meddle with what is actually working. We used to have a chapter here in the far western suburbs. It is good that they have someone representing homeschoolers who are not doing it primarily for religious reasons. Guest Dulcimeramy
I'm following on FB. I'm not in Illinois, but I know full well that if this can happen there, it can happen here (Indiana). I am outraged that they are limiting speakers opposing the bill, and padding the time with public school representatives and law enforcement who are giving their anti-American reasons for supporting the bill. pdalley
Yeah, they aren't concerned with teachers that have sinister intentions. That made my blood boil. When I open the paper every day and read the news about yet another public school teacher/employee that is engaging in inappropriate behavior (locally we had one run off and marry a student, another arrested for having sex in public with her former - underage student, and one sexting with a student) then I get really cheesed off about crud like that. Police your backyard before coming and trying to tell me what's wrong in mine. I loathe bureaucrats. The truant officer is giving me flashbacks to when I had to deal with power mad administrators in the public schools.

(If I were to put them in ps...) Do I get to evaluate the teacher and report her to the state if I don't like the way she teaches? That is wrong wrong wrong on so many levels! It's funny to joke about inviting him to do the dishes, but the reality is a truant officer would be used to bully HSers in every *sinister* way imaginable if this were to be so. Avila
A high school administrator in my hometown was caught texting naughty pics to high school girls from his state-paid-for cell phone and ordering the same kind of materials from his WORK PC. They said they couldn't fire him because he had been a tenured teacher and if they let him go from his administration position, they had to put him back in the classroom. Last I heard, he was still on paid administrative leave. $100,000 plus a year of it. And I actually knew this guy in high school. It is outrageous. But by all means, go after the homeschoolers. I mean, we are all costing the state at least that much, right? I just don't get it. Illinois homeschoolers are private schools. What do the truant officers and Superintendents have to do with them legally? These groups don't police the MANY unaccredited private schools in Illinois that are open to the public. They don't monitor or register them. And they lose the same funding for all private school students as they do for private school homeschooled students. I guess they think homeschoolers make for an easy scapegoat and an easy target.

pdalley
Senator Lightford can't understand why we'd want to be around our kids all day. Says she likes a break from hers. So now we're not just 'sinister' - we're weird for liking our kids. Oh another 'gem' - Sen. Martinez: how many families are "hiding behind" homeschooling family but falling through the cracks? pdalley
Seriously?? This is her arguement? :svengo: I'll certainly agree she shouldn't homeschool if that's the case. The way these people get away with throwing out asinine remarks with no data.... I want data - how many 'sinister' intended homeschoolers are there that such a bill is necessary? How many truant officers have had such a positive impact on struggling students that they need to have increased power? How many families are 'hiding'? Facts. The persons behind this bill don't seem to be acquainted with them.

mommaduck
Illlinois. Suburbs of Chicago. Hmmm, given that this is a recurring issue and those boys have the right to walk to and from the library (in fact, are carrying id stating they homeschool and have given account as to where they are coming from and where they are going), this could easily turn into filing for harassment against the PD. I'd be calling an attorney.
