Purple Sage
LOL. We are relatively new to this home schooling thing....only 1 1/2 years into it. My kids, ages 10 and 13, are begging for a "snow day" today because ALL their friends are out of school. Guess what? I am a MEAN mom! We called last Friday a "hiking day" and didn't do school and we are calling this Friday a "travel day" as we drive to Rapid City South Dakota for a week....so they are doing school today! No snow day here, as tempting as it would be for mom to curl up in front of the fire with a book and hot tea....we are going to put in a full day! :D:lol:
Gratia271
Mine asked me that too. I told them we will have a relaxed day... oldest laughed and said, "Isn't that every day anyway?":lol:
MomOfOneFunOne
Join the Mean Mom Club. I did invite my daughter to get up early and hurry to get her work done so she could have an afternoon free. It's almost 8 so I guess she declined the offer. We have work to do. Snow just doesn't undo that fact. When it's done, though . . . Whoooo Hoooo!
UmMusa
We're doing school, too. All the districts are closed here, but seeing as the accumulation is more ice and sleet instead of fluffy snow there's no way I'm gonna skip school. RebeccaS
My kids have not been to public school yet, so they have no concept of a snow day. I'm happy to keep it that way. I'd rather get the work done and play later (ie Summer!) when the schools are making up those snow days. So, no snow day here either. :001_smile:
littlebug42
We will probably have a Netflix school day. Dh is off of work due to the weather and we don't tend to get too much accomplished when he is here. The girls would rather spend time with Daddy and I am OK with that. Dmmetler
We did one Snow day for the first day the schools were off, but since then haven't bothered-that was the day with the best, nice, fluffy, sled on, play in snow anyway.
Princess Peach
I am debating what to do about tomorrow and possibly Thursday (probable snow days for DH since he's a teacher). It's hard to get work done while he's home, but we need to do our work!
prairiebird
My kids are lucking out because we took off all last week and will take off this week as I restructure their stuff and get ready for our inspection from our landlord. (He wants everything off the walls so he can look at the wall condition. It's annoying, but he only does it about every three years, so I can deal.) We're doing netflix movies, general living books, cub scout stuff, a general science experiment kit, and I might throw something together for Groundhogs Day and Chinese New Year. They're probably learning about the weather this week too since every channel seems to be going on and on about the snow.
2squared
I game my dc a snow day last Thursday. Temps were above freezing for the first time all winter. Seemed like a great day for outside play. We are back to negative temps today. Perfect day for school.
Mom22ns
We're not taking a snow day in spite of every area school district being closed. I let dd sleep a little late and told them we'd do a light day, but I haven't figured out what to skip yet:D
Tammyla
I've always been open to an hour outdoors if they want it. However, mine are older now. My ds might enjoy going out, but dd...is 16 and it just isn't that tempting anymore. They grow up so quickly:grouphug:.
Aubrey
It's TX--if there's snow, we stop!
Lostinabook
No snow day here since it's just ice so who want to go outside anyway?
Barry Goldwater
My DDs traded skipping one subject in exchange for shoveling out /ice-hacking out our elderly next door neighbor (they often get hot chocolate from them, too :001_smile:). Took them over an hour! Fair trade, I think...esp. since I don't have to go do it now!
arstephia
We don't do snow days - we take SUNSHINE DAYS in March and April when those warm sunny days beckon us. My kids are older now and truly appreciate the sunshine days so I don't hear whining about snow days anymore.
Unicorn.
:001_smile: You do realize that a snow day means public school students have been given assignments to do at home, right? It is not a totally free day b/c the state exam and AP exam dates, the all-county music tryouts, term paper due dates etc wiill not be moved to compensate for missed instruction. Think of it as a 'work at home' day for those serious about their education. The teachers here were kind enough to send home answer keys with the work for the snow days and short days before mid-terms, knowing that they would not have enough review time in class. They don't do that here, but then bad weather days are usually called at the last minute, and are few and far between. I'll have to ask the cousins in CT if her kids have work to do at home. Our district makes up the snow days that are not built into the schedule. So they will make up the work. In school. In June. Poor kids! Tree House Academy
Rather than snow days, we have "Finish your school and then you can go outside and play" days. LOL And we have been homeschooling for 3 years! I am the mean mom here too, I guess!
Saille
No snow day at our house...we have a break week next week anyway, so it seems a little silly. We'll see about tomorrow, though. We're supposed to get a foot of snow tonight, and we've been working so hard that they've been playing in the snow in the dark, some days. Debbie in IL
No snow day here for us either. All schools - even universities - are off today in prep for the blizzard. No snow yet, though - it is due to arrive sometime from noon on. We may take the day off tomorrow - we'll see! I don't mind doing school on days like this, though. Cozy, watching the snow fall, reading in front of the fireplace. Very peaceful.
Farrar
"Snow days" in our house are often the days that the most school gets done and we catch up on all the stuff we were behind on.
Purple Sage
Actually if it were a lot of snow and warmer temps I would give them the day off...but it is -8 with wind chills in the -30 range. Not even a temptation to go outside! And here the PS don't do any work at home on snow days, they are usually just called the morning of and don't have any chance to assign homework, they just make up the time in the spring. Doodle
We're still doing school, but then we've already been outside in the snow this morning. While I shoveled the driveway, Doodle was playing. That's our snow day.
