  1. Just an FYI: Khan Academy has instructional videos for Singapore Math...only the first few, thus far. I'm not sure which edition, however.
  2. The Reading Lesson is very simple to implement. At age 5, just have her read a page a day. Simple pages with no clutter. My son learned his letters from the Leapfrog DVD and just turned 5 in Aug. He is not the best at blending, but is already making slow progress. I also own Alphaphonics & Phonics Pathways, but really like the no nonsense approach to phonics that TRL supports. I have the recommended Games for Reading book and will use some of the games to add some fun reinforcement.
  3. I realized I forgot to mention we use the U.S. edition. Does anyone know when negative numbers are introduced in SM U.S. edition? Still can't find it on the website from their content pages. Thanks.
  4. Thanks! I guess I didn't check too well in 5A. ;-) Hmmm...If negative numbers aren't introduced until 6B and I want to start AoPS Pre-algebra next year, I will have to find another means to teach her negative numbers. Maybe I'll use Khan Academy? Has anyone skipped SM 6A&6B and gone onto Pre-algebra? What did you do to teach nagative numbers, then?
  5. I looked on Singapore Math's website under the content pages of each level to find where division by a two digit number is introduced, but couldn't find it. (Example : 5628 divided by 12) I also tried to find where negative number computations are introduced? Same results. We had used SM exclusively for many years. My dd is currently in 5A. We just recently started Hands On Equations for supplemental math fun. She is loving it! I think AoPS Pre-Algebra for my DD next year, when she is in 6th, would be a nice fit (aside from the two concepts mentioned above, she is ready). Could someone shed some light on finding those concept introductions for me? Also, any advice on prep for these two concepts, so that she is ready for AoPS pre-algebra? Thanks!
  6. I recall someone a few months ago suggesting doing math copywork to reinforce facts. Haven't done that yet, but I can see how it could be beneficial and less stressful. I myself don't drill the kids, though I would love for them to have the facts down better. We have tried Times Tales, but it didn't stick. It has been a year since using it. What has helped is just using math. I am going to incorporate the copywork asap.
  7. Anyone implement an outdoor classroom? I was recently made aware of a fabulous book, "Moving the Classroom Outdoors: Schoolyard-Enhanced Learning in Action." http://www.stenhouse.com/shop/pc/viewprd.asp?idProduct=9338&r=eu11232&pos=sponstop1&adv=stenhouse (Includes a great online preview with tons of photos.) We are trying to make our large outdoor space even more inviting, by implementing many of the ideas. I would love to read the experiences/ideas of others.
  8. Sounds like a fantastic idea! My DD is an avid reader and would love this! Keep me posted!
  9. I would second Heart of Dakota (www.heartofdakota.com) Bigger Hearts for His Glory. Buy the extension books and follow the extension plans.:D
  10. I second The Wolves of Willoughby Chase I would also like to put a recommendation in for: Gone-Away Lake by Elizabeth Enright The Twenty-One Balloons by William Pene du Bois Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls
  11. BHFHG - Bigger Hearts for His Glory by Heart of Dakota I'm interested in knowing this, as well.
  12. When I mean RS spelling is behind, it is in relation to other spelling programs we have came across. This is more true for the 2nd and 3rd grade words, IMHO. We still like it!
  13. I had this same question about a week ago...here is the discussion thread http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=181777 Hope it help!:)
  14. I say stick with it or combine both into 4. Many people say that R&S is one level behind. So, grade 4 would work for grade 3. My children have picked-up so much this year. This was our first year with R&S Spelling. We used 2 & 3. I don't know how a thumbs down icon appeared on my message. I give it a thumbs up!
  15. Has anyone used Hands on Equations (for algebra)? www.borenson.com Our Suzuki Piano teacher pointed it out to us. Of coarse, it is a little too early to start algebra with my DD. I wanted to get input now before I forget.
  16. Another one you can add to The Elements to extend the study is The Wonder of Chemistry...living book....available free on google books and other sites.:D
  17. :iagree: Thanks for your insight.
  18. For WWE4: Narration passages are 11 paragraphs, initially and dictation passage are 40 words long (two sentences, generally). By the end, narrations passages are 20-25 paragraphs. Dictation passages are about 60 words long. I have heard, in previous threads, of children becoming frustrated remembering such long dicatation passages. It is currently happening on occasion in WWE3 fo my DD. I am personally only dictating one sentence at a time for my DC, as I personally don't like the frustration is causes them and me! (I think the dictation passages are just too plain long to remember, especially in WWE4. I love my children's progress in writing over the last year and the overall method of WWE. We will stick with it!)
  19. For WWE3: Day 1: Narration Day 2: Dictation Day 3: Narration & Dictation (Which eventully goes to Narration & Original Sentence Exercise in week 28) Day 4: Dictation For WWE4: Day 1: Narration & Dictation Day 2: Dictation Day 3: Narration and Dictation (which eventually goes to Narration Writing in week 29) Day 4: Dictation
