  1. I think that choosing a language that your son is naturally interested in is very important! We're studying French with my 1st grader for the same reason. We already had Rosetta Stone French, so we're using it. However, I'm not sure that I would spend the money to purchase it for use with a 2nd grader. I think there are probably other programs better suited to use with young children. Unfortunately I haven't used any, so I can't make any recommendations.
  2. My vote was for K or earlier. However, I have a son who insists that we do history every day because he loves it so much. If he wasn't so into it we wouldn't have started so soon.
  3. I said other. I usually get out by myself once every two weeks or so.
  4. Yes, yes, yes! This is the first time this school year that I just feel like not doing anything at all. Fortunately we got through all of the school work except for me reading to him and him reading to me. He's been reading to himself, though, so I guess I can cross that off the list. It's Dr. Seuss' birthday today, so I have a stack of his books I wanted to read on top of Just So Stories that was scheduled. Thankfully Marc noticed how burnt out I am when he came home for lunch and said he would read them to the boys tonight. He also offered to pick up some needed groceries on his way home and to make dinner. I'm so very lucky to have the husband that I have! My only problem now is that I don't have any new books to read (I forgot my list when I went to the library last week and the two books I picked were duds) and I don't have the energy for sewing or scrapbooking or anything creative. So I've been here at the computer for an hour. Reading message boards, hanging out on Facebook, being lazy! I should really go put in the last load of laundry, but I don't want to. I feel like crying and stomping my feet and screaming it......"I...don't...want...to!" So only commiseration from me. :lol
  5. Do you have an Office Max or other print shop? I had mine printed on cardstock and they look amazing!
  6. Considering the amount of snow we have right now (the plow man had to bring a backhoe to move the piles!) I just can't get myself excited about spring yet.
  7. I put mine in a post at my blog, We Don't Need No Education. You have my permission to use them at your meeting. I'm not sure if the descriptions under the pictures are sufficient, though.
  8. Ok, they are all done! Hopefully I didn't make any mistakes and left enough room for answers. Please let me know if I didn't. Most of them are pretty easy, but should I make up answer keys for them?
  9. Bumping the up because I have FINALLY finished more of the worksheets. I now have 15 of the 17 chapters completed. Please let me know if you find any mistakes. I am not a grammar person! If I don't finish tonight we are going to take the day off of schoolwork tomorrow so that I can finish these up. 10. I think the trick is finding something that they would love to read. The hard part, of course, is what? For us it was Calvin and Hobbes comics. Marc had three or four of the comic collections books from when he was a kid that he put in the bathroom for bathroom reading. Nik found them one morning and wanted us to read them to him. Daddy was busy getting ready for work and I was getting breakfast and morning chores done. Since neither of us had time, he sat down to read on his own. A month later and he wakes up, grabs a book and reads until everyone else is awake! I tell him to take a break from schoolwork and he grabs a book to read! Almost time for bed? "But I'm not done reading this chapter, yet!" The transformation is amazing. Other things that may have had an impact (but I'm giving most of the credit to Calvin and Hobbes!) are the very limited amounts of screen time in our house, the fact that Mom and Dad read all the time, and the fact that books are everywhere in our house. We have five bookshelves in the living room, one in the dining room, one in their bedroom, plus books in the bathrooms. None of these mattered until he found something that sparked his interest.
  11. I'm jealous! The local school district had a snow day (which I found out because they called my house to let me know! :lol) so we decided to take a snow day, too. But instead of having a fun day, I ended up doing major cleaning, de-cluttering, and organizing. I know I'll be glad I did it when I see how great it looks in here tomorrow, but right now I'm just t i r e d. I'm not even sure the boys enjoyed having the day to do whatever they wanted. They've listened to the same book on tape seven times today. I'm taking your idea next time and letting them watch tv all day if they want to!
  12. I don't see a problem with a note, but please don't put it in a ziploc! The dog could eat the bag, choke, and die!
  13. Have you tried the SOTW activity books, or just the text? The activity books have lists of additional history reading and literature suggestions for each chapter.
  14. I don't have any books on my nightstand because I read only one at a time and carry it from room to room with me in case I get a moment to read. However, the book I'm currently reading is book one of The Edge Chronicles! I ran out of books to read and didn't get a chance to go to the library today, so I grabbed one of Nik's books. I figured that I had enjoyed reading The Bartimaeus Trilogy (which I finished yesterday) so much that I might as well try this one. I'm taking notes so I have a good list to take to the library on my next trip!
  15. Seconding these two and the Peter and the Starcatchers series. Marc is on the last book of the series, which he has been reading at bedtime to the boys and they are all loving it. I just finished reading the third book in The Bartimaeus Trilogy. (And I mean just.....I finished about 15 minutes ago!) I loved it and highly recommend it. I read The Dark is Rising series when I was a child and loved it, too.
  16. Premature graying can be a sign of hypothyroidism, so be sure to have yours checked. I started getting gray hairs when I was in my early twenties. I finally have enough that I've started coloring my hair. I did not want to color it, but those weird streaks and chunks were just too much. I'm 30, btw.
  17. My four-year-old's favorite show is Man vs. Wild. If Nate ever gets dropped in the middle of a rain forest he might be able to survive just from the things he's learned watching the show. :tongue_smilie: My six-year-old likes to watch Cities of the Underworld. Super Why is their favorite cartoon, in case you were wondering what kind of strange children we're raising.
  18. Thank you for all the great ideas! We had the lemon and thyme chicken, rice, and a salad. It was simple and delicious. I'm going to start my menu planning right now so I don't have this happen again any time soon. :)
  19. Hmmm, maybe I should make this. Or maybe I should just stop changing my mind and go cook! I think we'll have the sweet and sour tomorrow. Other ideas are welcome. I still have a menu plan to work on!
  20. I have lots of cast iron! That sounds tasty and easy. I'm off to make it. Thank you! Thank you!
