  1. I thought it was very cute, but there were a few things that I wasn't impressed with. I couldn't keep count of how many times I heard someone say "idiot" or "moron" or a number of other inappropriate names. I am absolutely NOT ok with my children calling people names, so I get really sick of hearing this stuff in kids' movies! I would rather they hear swearing in a movie than this name calling that nobody else in the world seems to care about! Urgh, sorry, I'm a bit sick of movies being ruined by the language. Also, I thought some of the scenes were a bit intense, and some of the children around us seemed to agree (crying, having to have a parent leave the theater with them temporarily.) My kids were fine, but I think kids who scare easily might want to avoid this one. For the pre-teen, teen, adult.....it was adorable!
  2. Thank you! I hope someone has used both Discovering Great Artists and Artistic Pursuits and will chime in. I think Artistic Pursuits looks wonderful, but agree that it seems a bit expensive! It seems to have more info and activites, but I don't want a book that is going to replicate what we're already doing with DGA with only a little added. Does that make sense?
  3. I've also been trying to decide whether or not to use this program, and I have a related question or two. I hope the OP doesn't mind! Do we have to start with book one, or can we start anywhere we please? Has anyone using this used Discovering Great Artists? We already have DGA and I don't want to buy a curriculum that is going to mostly replicate what we are already using. Thanks!
  4. I don't have any suggestions, I just had to point out that I read your thread title and immediately thought Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. *sigh* Growing up in a house full of brothers and having only boys myself has had a major influence on me! lol
  5. :iagree: Calvin & Hobbes was the hook for my son, as well. It's all about finding what interests them. A trip to the library or bookstore is in order!
  6. We live in a very old house with original windows downstairs, too. First, get the landlord to open at least some of the windows! Next, buy this type of fan. Ours were cheaper than that, I think about $19 at Wal-Mart. They may not be as good as air conditioning, but they keep our upstairs nice and cool at night. They probably won't do much good during the heat of the day, but it sounds like you're planning on skipping the A/C anyway, so this might be a good (and much cheaper) alternative!
  7. This is how I feel. And I HATE to be called Ms. Jessica by a child, though I have no idea why. If it is a child with whom I have some sort of relationship beyond a casual acquantaince, and they are going to use my first name, I really prefer that they just call me Jessica. This is how we do it, also.
  8. We just finished our first year, but we've decided to school year round so that we can take days or weeks off whenever we need them. It worked out really great this year!
  9. Nik is 6 and spends hours every day reading Calvin and Hobbes comic collections. I don't know what the last book he read on his own was. :blushing:(I think it was a Magic Treehouse book.) By the time he's over his Calvin & Hobbes obsession I think he'll have all five of the comic collection books memorized! However, we read a lot to him. I think that counts at this young age, right? :D Our last read-aloud was The Tale of Despereax. We just started Little House in the Big Woods. Plus all of the living books we read as part of our "schoolwork." Daddy reads to them every night, as well; they recently finished the Peter and the Starcatchers series. Now they are on to the first few books in the Harry Potter series. They love to listen to adventures before bed!
  10. How cute! Are yours litter trained? How did you do it?
  11. My vote is for pinny-gigs. Er, guinea pigs. :D Sweet Pea Bandit Hera Best pets ever!
  12. These posts make me terrified to start CW Primer next year. I was very excited about this program despite the amount of biblical content (we're secular homeschoolers.) Now I'm feeling like I really need to find something else fast so that we don't have to go through program switches mid-year. Is there a pulling-your-hair-out smilie?!
  13. I wish I had known that ten years ago when I ruined our down comforter. I obviously didn't get the down completely dry, even though I would have sworn it was. I miss that blanket. :(
  14. Would you mind sharing your recipe? Marc loves Sweet Baby Ray's, and I would love a homemade version!
  15. Maple-Glazed Chicken with Sweet Potatoes (My sweet potatoes are not pre-packaged, though!), Brussels sprouts, and berries with whipped cream.
  16. I hope she's feeling better very soon!
