  1. I really like this blog. I am secular and have not seen anything religious, but I have not read every page. She has a youtube channel too with some great videos! Not super active, but still active. http://interactivehomeschooling.blogspot.com/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCURTg-RlC6q1FPSpI1W4Y3g/videos
  2. I have read in a couple of different places that the family does not believe in tetanus shots.
  3. Something that I find so telling about this whole situation is the lack of personal responsibility. These parents invited government involvement into their lives when they trespassed on their neighbor's property and stole his water. They have to own that, and unless they do I don't think there is much hope for them.

  5. We love Nancy Larson here. The different kits are not by grade, but by level, and can serve a range of kids as described on her web site.
  6. What really adds to CLE's awesomeness is the consumable workbook format. No copying problems! I am a secular homeschooler and still use it. I just whip out my sharpie when needed (and there have been a handful of times) and we skip all the completely optional "bible math" pages.
  7. If you get a porta potty, either spring for the super nice all in one bathroom trailers, or get the handwashing station to go with the traditional kind. Do not skip out on the handwashing.
  8. Momto2Ns- Can you tell me about the religious content in WA? How much is there and what is it like? Could a secular homeschooler use it? Thanks.
  9. I have absolutely nothing against EM (I use many of their products and have heard good things about their geography), but wanted to give you a third option. This year we use Maps, Globes, and Graphs and it has been a huge success. https://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?subject=History%2FGeography&category=Maps-Globes-Graphs+Series
  10. If there is a street he drives down frequently, you might look into a street facing tree mounted or fence mounted wildlife cam with the consent of the property owner.
  11. My kid (same age, currently using CLE) has geometry issues with confusing definitions of different polygons too. I do not sweat it. I think back to when I was in school and we barely learned any geometry at all until we took it in high school. I turned out fine and even went on to excel in math in college and become an engineer. If you think about it, it is not really all that necessary in terms of building knowledge for future math levels. Except for the Pythagorean Theorem, when do you really use geometry before actually taking the full year course. By the time you take trig or math analysis (translate, rotate), you have already had geometry. Just keep talking about it when it comes up in their curriculum, but don't sweat it.
  12. Love Nancy Larson! It is expensive, but everything is included and it gets done! I have not used the K set. We used level 3 this year (my son is older).
  13. He is definitely does not have dysgraphia. Subject interest has only a mild effect on enthusiasm. I have considered Dragon Naturally Speaking, but would like to try a gentle writing program first. Thanks for your response!
  14. My son will be in 6th grade in the fall. This was our first year of homeschooling. Overall, it has gone well. So much less stress than PS! He needs serious help with writing. He hates the physical act of writing. However, he will not type, so writing it is. He needs to learn how to write good sentences, paragraphs, and eventually a simple essay or report. I have emphasized to him over and over that 6th grade WILL have more writing and he will have to do it. (I eased off this year and we did many things orally to help with the adjustment to homeschool and decrease meltdowns as he was going through some medication changes.) Right now the only non math writing he does are the two sentences required for EM Daily Language review and an occasional sentence in Nancy Larson Science. He seems to have trouble spelling, but has no problem identifying misspelled words or incorrectly used homophones. He is good with punctuation. Is the a gentle, gradual writing program that has worked for your child with HFA? My only requirement is that it needs to be secular or easily secularized. Thanks in advance.
  15. I was one last year. I will not lie, there always seems to be something to do. I am happy to answer any questions you may have.
  16. This is so wonderful. What a privilege to be able to make a massive difference in the life of a child. I am sure you will see many changes by the end of the summer.
  17. CLE Math Nancy Larson Science Evan Moor Daily Language Review Wordly Wise
  18. Thank you for posting this!!! Are the number of the books equivalent to grade level? Can you post a picture of one of the guides so I know what I am looking for? Excited about this. Was considering Mosdos (it sounds great) but large investment in ELA is a dicey proposition here as my son has HFA and sometimes will reject things without reason.
  19. How do the FAN-Math books fall level wise? Do you use a below level book? My son will be in 6th grade in the fall. Where do you buy them?
  20. Oh how I wish there were a secular equivalent for CLE reading!
  21. I also use CLE and have started using this for additional word problems. I would love to hear other suggestions though. http://www.amazon.com/Kansas-Grade-Math-Test-Prep/dp/1505715288/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1428453664&sr=8-8&keywords=math+test+prep+kansas ETA: Going to buy the Evan Moor teachers' file box next year. I think they have a word problem supplement book.
  22. Your FIL acted like an ass, but your real problem is with your husband. Seriously. His failure to listen to your concerns about his family, help you at family gatherings, or work with you on a change of venue are really big issues. Stand up for yourself and consider getting some counseling.
  23. You could do it only for clothes. Give your daughter X amount every quarter for clothes [i feel it is a parent's responsibility to clothe a child (in a non trendy utilitarian way)] and let her decide how to spend it. ETA-If she manages to resell any of her clothes to a resale shop or in your sale then she will have extra money for clothes-a win!
  24. We use NLS too and love it. The different kits are levels, not grades and can engage a range of learners. See the website for more info. BTW-I think they are on the verge of releasing NL5.
