  1. We use Nancy Larson science. I LOVE it! It is fully scripted with all supplies included and really well written. The only downside is the price. It is expensive.
  2. Please help me. I am appealing to the extensive knowledge base of the Hive! My son is currently in 5th grade. I removed him from school in April of this year (4th grade) because he was having so many behavior issues associated with his High Functioning Autism. I deschooled until the start of this school year (when my other child returned to public school) when I started homeschooling in earnest. My son is average or above average IQ, but challenged with fine motor skills. He HATES anything to do with writing. I have been successful in getting him to write a sentence or two here or there, but he groans about it. I am not pushing LA right now because I am focusing on science, math, and social studies in order to respark his love of learning and engage him in school. [i do have him doing Wordly Wise (much of it orally) and a HM reading curriculum where we complete the associated worksheets together.] It is working fairly well. However, I want him to be able to write paragraphs and basic essays by the time he is done with 8th grade. He needs remediation. What LA curriculum would you suggest for a kid who HATES to write, but really needs to learn how to write well constructed sentences and paragraphs? *Must be secular or easily secularized* Thanks.
  3. While not life threatening, educational neglect is certainly life limiting and should be taken seriously.
  4. This situation makes me ill. She is not going to change and no amount of self educating websites are going to fix this problem. Her kids need to be in public school. I would report her to the school district ASAP.
  5. 1. See a psychiatrist (MD), not a psychologist. 2. Consider an antidepressant (ie Zoloft) and possibly Intuniv.
  6. I live about 3 miles from it and still have not been  Wonder how I could work my son's daily curriculum around an IKEA field trip ? :tongue_smilie:
  7. studyjams.scholastic.com has good explanation videos too. They might make a nice supplement to CLE. Khan Academy does a good job of doing the actual math proof reason why things are done in their video explanations.
  8. I have a 10 year old (5th grader) and am using Level 3. It is a little easy for him, but would be too hard for your younger kids (especially the six year old). Overall, I am glad I picked this level for him because he is getting good reinforcement on some concepts he heard about in public school (I just pulled him in the spring) without it being intimidating. We are knee deep in astronomy right now. NL does a good job of making these complicated concepts easily understood. You should definitely go with 1 or 2. If you choose 1, you can use the extensive reading list (provided) and some internet resources like Khan Academy to beef up the info for your oldest. Many, many good websites out there dealing with these basic sciences.
  9. Just FYI-- There is a hard to find khan academy version too. I am using it with my son as it is a little more streamlined. Love this crashcourse video! https://www.khanacademy.org/partner-content/big-history-project/what-is-big-history/welcome-to-big-history/v/bhp-big-bang-crashcourse
  10. I am doing The Big History Project with my son, It has a wonderful explanation of why this is so important. https://www.bighistoryproject.com/home
  11. With friends like these, who needs enemies? Seriously, find some other HS friends.
  12. HOURS of time wasting/forum reading entertainment.
  13. For those of you who feel this is a CYA, I am not a poster there, but I LOVE the discussion on Free Jinger right now about this. To the point and witty.
  14. The lid lock is a security feature- to prevent limb loss (during spin cycle) and drowning with kids.
  15. I bought it for the fall. I am so excited to put it to use!
  16. Have you tried the controlled release melatonin?
  17. The state provides the funding. However, it is up to the district to implement the program to receive the funding. Some districts are way ahead of others in implementation. Eventually, it will probably be completely universal as the districts want the funding and the more students, the more funding. The district I grew up in now has free pre K for any child.
  18. I am a Chem E. I am going to use Nancy Larson this fall with my son. I am so excited about science! I plan on supplementing with documentaries/ educational field trips, etc. However, I have to agree with the above poster that a STRONG foundation in math is equally if not more important. Also, many scout groups and robotics clubs exist that host various STEM activities.
  19. For those of you who did not like Nancy Larson Science, can you please tell me why? I have picked it for the fall (I am a science person) and am so excited about it. However, it is so $$$$! Thanks!
