  1. Did she check her voter registration card? Our polling place moved since the primary just a few months ago. I've never had to wait, and today was no different. New location, but very efficient! In and out in 10 minutes for me, DH and Mil! We are rural- we just vote at a church in the middle on no where- not even a town.
  2. That was the first election I voted in! I was 19- i think this one is going to be just as,bad. I think it was December before we knew who won!
  3. You might call the neighbors and see if there is someone in their area offering home made meals. In my area there are a handful of SAHMs who make meals and deliver them a few times per week, like a cottage bakery, just from their houses to a few elderly people. Its all from scratch, good food- nothing fast, frozen. The idea is that someone who can't cook or doesn't want a ton of left overs can still get that good homemade food! For example they might bake a pie, and it is divided up for 2 or 3 clients. A roast would be divided up- enough for 2-3 meals each, and delivered to each client- complete with carrots, potatoes and gravy, possibly a half dozen homemade rolls. Just like Meals on Wheels, but homemade food, not cafeteria style- and just 1 or 2x per week. As for grocery delivery, the elderly couple in our life does not like to do the ordering, so we get their written list and put the order in, then tell them when to pick up (they can still drive, but immune compromised so can't go in stores).
  4. I also have a KA hand mixer! And I bought one for my SIL, too. Pretty colors, easy to use.
  5. Prayers for healing and for you!
  6. Hugs to you and your kids! Our school is the same, you have to decide by 9th grade if you are all in, or all out. Maybe take comfort in the fact that they are not alone- all kids are struggling through this year, no matter where you are or what type of school they do! My homeschooling kiddos are not in co-op, my Dual Enrolled Senior is going to 1 class, masked, no talking or socializing (she says it's no fun at all) and the rest of her classes are online.
  7. I spent my 20th anniversary at home- in a national lock down due to a global pandemic- counting squares of toilet paper! I think we will wait snd do something big for 25! Dh does say we can go shop for a pretty jewelry piece to remember this one by!
  8. As someone who has been trying to juggle similar things the last 2 years- DD is now thinking she will go to a 4 year that we hadn't planned on in Sophomore year 😉 You really have no idea where the next 3 years will take you! And then we have Covid which is making DE no fun at all. I would not encourage your DD to take any classes this year, and very little Jr year. I wouldn't do the placement test, just let her learn the Algebra 2 this year, and decide where to go next year in the spring.
  9. Girl, you cannot catch a break! Hugs!
  10. Thank you! I will take it off the list- and im open to other options that are reasonably priced.
  11. You call the people and say you just cannot take them at this time, and return them. Kids and your family costs come before pets- and tehse aren't even YOUR pets- they are cast offs!
  12. DD1 is a Senior and Covid has wrecked her plans for Senior year. Last year she got to take classes on campus at the local CC and she loved it and planned to take all on campus this year... then when everything hit, we eventually ended up with 1 class in person, 3 online for fall. The in person class was with her favorite teacher, but it's still been a mess- no fault of the teacher- just general craziness. DD is just frustrated bc being in class hasn't been fun at all- they are masked and spread all out, she goes into class, takes her seat, listens, then leaves. The class has gone from 30 to about 15- of which there are often less than 10 present at any given class- and more are being 'work days' where they check in online, then fill out a report of what they worked on- she won't be going in those days from now on- yesterday only 2 kids showed up (and the teacher). She feels isolated and says college isn't any fun at all- and she's wasting her classes by taking them now. Her online classes are acceptable, but not the same as in person. To make this even worse, the college has decided to have 8 week blocks for Spring, and almost everything is online and no labs. At first, she picked out her 4 classes- 2 per block- but it's October and she's over the online classes. If her purpose of taking a class is to enjoy it, this is killing the joy! Discussion boards are not the same as a real discussion! ANd it isn't like she's behind, she can easily do no classes this spring and wait until next fall (hopefully!!!!). SHe's been accepted several places, and has good merit aid, but I do have to submit final grades and feel this semester needs some classes! Plus she needs something to do. This brings me to my questions. She's ready for Calculus- has taken College Algebra (Lials), and is currently in Business Statistics (still math, but much easier!), and had planned to take Calculus 2nd semester. I even bought the book! Now they are doing it in person 3 hours a day, 3 days a week or online for 8 weeks- I think that's NUTS!!! So- my choices (found in the big link on the main board- free)- MIT Open Courseware- How do I grade this? Khan- again, how do I figure a grade? Stewarts Calculus book I bought for the college class- coveres AB and BC- how do I grade this? I am SOOOO beyond my abilities! I think she knows most of Calc AB just from other stuff she's done. I think she still plans to take Calc 1 at college, so this would be just a way to get ahead. Or she could possibly CLEP out? She may want to do something in a math-related field, so I was trying to make sure she was in a real class with a real teacher! I am open to other options, but would prefer to only pay if it's something that will count towards college credit. I am mostly concerned with making a plan and figuring grades. I have always used textbooks with pre-made tests and answer keys. And what else should we do? There are 2 online classes that run March-May that she thinks will be okay online- Microeconomics and Accounting 2- she's currently in these classes this semester and these sort of just continue, so she says they will be easy and kinda fun. Here are her credits this year- all college classes: English 2 Statistics Macroeconomics Accounting 1 (so we could potentially add Microecomics, Accounting 2 and Calculus). She is very upset to not have a science b/c its' her favorite subject, but we planned college classes, then decided against due to Covid and labs- she says it was a good call. She doesn't want to waste her college science classes by having sub-par courses in Covid Craziness (already did when Chemistry was put online last March- it was a HOT MESS). I made a list of classes she can do at home with me (b/c I really have all this time- I have 4 other kids to homeschool and a preschooler!), but I don't know if I want to do that or not- they are as follows: Calling Bull$h!t- lectures and assignments from their website, and possibly the Argument Builder book by CAP Foods- B/c she could use more on this Stocks- b/c shes interested, but again I don't have a real resource to 'grade'- we would probably use the videos from TD Ameritrade that my DH has access to. Mental Health- b/c we all know this is super-important right noW! I was thinking jsut a booklist and conversation, journal, maybe making posters of warning signs and making sure she knows how and when to get help (for her or a friend). And my dream would be if she could work in her field as a secretary or something, but that is very doubtful! Do you have any advice for me? Especially about the Calculus or about what this semester's transcript will look like? I do not want to to seem like she just slacked off her Sr year.
  13. Prayers! Hoping for the best outcome!
  14. My big family often has TG in someone's garage with the doors up and sometimes a metal fire pit in the garage doorway (barely outside, so plenty of heat gets in the garage).
  15. Do you have a flat concrete place to ride a Rip Razor? It is the #1 toy at my house for kids of all ages! Its like a big tricycle with castor wheels on the back. Not as dangerous as a hoverboard 😉
  16. Hugs, it has been such a rough year for you! Vent away! I know your DH is stretched so thin with everything- and you are trying to do as much as you can to help! The work stress has made a hard year even harder. Hoping with the new company things will be more predictable. Is it too late to drop a class? You should be so proud of him, I have been impressed with his dedication to doing so much. My main vents have to do with elder care, nursing homes and other health issues that have been made so much harder. They would be hard enough without Covid. Right now they feel impossible. And one kid is struggling, and that's been hard. I just keep telling us both that it will be better soon- next summer!
  17. We are having funny Halloween themed foods and playing games- some plan to dress up, too. Half of my kids are too old to ToT anyway, but normally I would take the little ones.
  18. I think its important to know what goes on the shelves and how full they are. If they are pretty full, I would paint it all the color of the trim. If its just a few decorative items, pictures, ect. Then I'd go with a brighter color that coordinates in your room- medium blue, green, red (assuming your main room color is neutral).
  19. I would encourage the student to spend the next year building his transcript to make him more competitive since its such a selective school.
  20. I have a toilet with no sink right off a mud room- we live on a farm and wanted a mud room to come in, wash up, go to the bathroom, ect without tracking into the rest of the house. We walled in one corner for a shower stall and stool. They use the sink in the larger mudroom. I admit it is weird, but it works for farm living! I have lots of kids and in your situation I would set up a large girls bathroom, boys bathroom, and one off the master. Id put double sinks, and maybe put the shower snd/or stool in a different section with a closed door. I would also definitely find a way to put a bathroom where kids can run in and out without tracking into the house!
  21. I would suggest giving a full test first before starting on the book- get one from online, not the one in the book- just to give you a place to start. Once you've done that, you should be able to determine where you need to focus. If its the math section, give him the math section from the book- grade it, then go through every problem he missed and explain why. You may not need to use the entire book- its just there for you to explain every answer and help you take note of what you need to reteach or practice on. I think there is a section on test taking tips, if so, read that.
  22. I would have a no video game week- probably for all kids. I'd tell them that I though we needed a no video game week.
  23. Have you helped him figure out how to study? That is my goal for the year- here are the things we are doing: Vocabulary- write definition, group similar ones together by color. Look for key words in the definition and underline them- I use a squiggly line. Notes- practice taking various types of notes- from formal ones to posters with pictures and arrows. If there is something with a 4 part system, divide a paper into 4 sections and keep similar information grouped together. When looking at the test, go through and highlight key words that will help him identify what the question is asking. Identify answers that you know are incorrect and mark them off. Make your best guess and move on, but mark the question to come back to if he has time. Often a question later in the test can spark a memory for a previous question.
  24. Same here- my DD will take 2 classes the first 8 weeks snd 2 classes the second 8 weeks. None are 'fun' classes, and she's only taking them bc she needs to do something. I have been brainstorming for options snd here are a few I'm kicking around: Calling Bull$h!t - this is an online series of lectures and reading, we would do a lot of discussion, minimal output. Mental Health Awareness and Stress Management- thinking something with meditation, just reading and discussing ways to improve mental health, good strategies for managing stress and overall management of life stuff- this would just be books picked, read and discussed- maybe make notes to self, ect that she takes with her next year. Probably an exercise portion, too. And maybe even charting her cycles to help manage emotions Cooking- bc its fun! Working- I would love for her to get a part time job in her area of interest- even just as a receptionist. Right now she's babysitting 3 days a week. Lots of kids in public school get credit for working. Calculus- bc i think its ridiculous to have this be 8 weeks online! I'm not sure if she will do a real class or just Khan and a book I already bought.
  25. Hop on over to the High School board! There are many ways to homeschool high school. I do not outsource classes except for college Dual Enrollment. I've currently got a Senior doing all DE through the college and a 10th grader that I teach. I like to buy textbooks used from Amazon. Best of luck to you! My oldest is not having any issues getting into college or getting scholarships! I know thatvwas one of my big worries.
