Reviews for online Math
MarkT replied to Murrayshire's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
It is actually hard to find since the forum search tool can't seem to find it. It probably needs to get pinned. -

Foerster Algebra has been slow - advice needed!
MarkT replied to abrightmom's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
sample syllabus for reference: http://kolbe.org/files/9614/1027/6728/Algebra1Foerster2014SemesterSAMPLE.pdf If your student continues through some of the summer than he should have enough Algebra to take both Geometry and Clover Creek Physics. The following year you could finish Algebra 1 before moving on to Algebra 2. -
I believe Industrial Design is more on the artistic side not to be confused with Industrial Engineering. Of course, there are probably over-laps. Think "form" along with "function".

http://collegemajors101.com/college-majors/industrial-design/2465/accredited-schools one in CO http://www.msudenver.edu/ind/academicresources/coursedescriptions/ Does your CC have similar courses? I would contact MSU Denver to see what CC in your state have transferable courses. ======================================= also http://www.idsa.org/education/id-schools Can you get a job with a two year degree?
-
Two year "tech degree" courses hardly ever transfer to 4 year schools. This is expected.

Major high school math mess up
MarkT replied to jeandh's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
For the "advanced math" take the College Algebra course required for the degree if possible in your student's senior year spread it over the whole year. If your CC does not allow that then do it at home with the same textbook and have him take the math placement test. [Our local CC is quite flexible how they take College Algebra and they offer different variants such as one semester or parts 1 to 4 over two or more semesters (self-paced).] -
National merit finalist question
MarkT replied to creekmom's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Is "NMS Commended" worth anything towards other merit scholarships? My DS is on the bubble. If he only gets commended I assume that is still worth putting on College Apps. -
Math people yet another precalculus question
MarkT replied to MamaSprout's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
"What you'll learn Understand, visualize and manipulate different elementary functions, like powers, roots, polynomials, trigonometric functions, exponential and logarithmic functions Understand, visualize and solve equations and inequalities involving these elementary functions Understand the concept of differentiation and to calculate the derivatives of compositions of elementary functions Understand the concept of integration and to use some elementary integration techniques " It does cover Trig, probably assumes that you had significant prior exposure. It is a short course so probably won't be in depth as a full semester. Give it a spin. -
Pre-calc - is it essential?
MarkT replied to Connections's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Yes but this student could always take College Algebra in college like thousands of other students have done in the past. -
Don't they have a teacher's edition?
-
I assume this is Holt refresher Where is the error? Maybe a typo.

Pre-calc - is it essential?

Stats may be the better choice in this case. I assume your student is not going to be a STEM major in college. -

Online Algebra 2 Classes
MarkT replied to AFwife Claire's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
If you go with the co-op plan on supplementing - for us supplementing was mostly in the summer, but summer in southern AZ is our worst weather. for online you can look here http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/542418-homeschooling-high-school-math/?do=findComment&comment=6191109 and here http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/638806-master-list-of-on-line-classes/ -

Math for next year, struggling a lot with this
MarkT replied to Janeway's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Is it Chapter 12 Probability, Data Analysis ... that he had so much trouble with or a cumulative test after? I don't think difficulty with Probability means the course was a disaster so far. Probability can be a topic on it's own. You could do a little mini-course about Probability and possibly get a tutor after Algebra 2. How did he do in the other chapters? He does need to learn mastery and maybe some spiraling is needed with this student. I would add a two week review at the course end and then have him take an old NYS Algebra 2 Regents exam (free download with answers). You could print it and cross out the problems that don't apply. These are great open resource.
