  1. I just read "The Broken Ladder" - This is a good book about why living in a place with a high "inequality factor" is not desirable. It is NOT an Economics book at all, it is a quick read (there is some repetition but not bad) http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31522124-the-broken-ladder
  2. You have a few weeks after the test date to send for free. I asked DS how he did and he said fine so we sent them for free.
  3. hey hive - there is a pinned thread to capture this kind of info: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/638806-master-list-of-on-line-classes/
  4. my brain "read" that has Algebra based which may be wrong - if you are correct then this is probably a weak class maybe OP can paste actual course description in this thread
  5. I am sure that it will cover more than the stats "peppered" through the typical math texts. Maybe do a 1/2 year course from this CC text. Exposure is good for stats so you are aware of what is available as a tool in your toolbox. What grade is your student in?
  6. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/559886-swap-thread-for-approved-ap-course-syllabi/ google found it
  7. The changes were not very big for AP Calc. How can you be over-prepared?
  8. I don't think any degree gets you a "career" per se - it gives you a knowledge base - Math and Physics are strong degrees that show future employers that you were willing to work hard for that degree. Tech companies like those degrees as well.
  9. My only advice is one needs to know when you are over your head in a course and learn to bail from that class before the W deadline (personal lesson-learned from back in the day). I made the same mistake your student did.
  10. FYI Go Math! Accelerated Grade 7 problem sets: https://sites.google.com/a/fruitvale.net/mrs-lehman-7th-accelerated/home/additional-math-help
  11. I am not a big fan of "the blind leading the blind" (is that PC these days). Don't skimp on Math there are inexpensive options out there.
  12. Does your state have a free online public charter available?
  13. DS done with APs for this year - taking a nap He said Calc AB and English Lang were OK now the wait for the scores
  14. My DS in a B&M Charter is finishing up with College Physics by Wilson, Buffa and Lou The text has clear presentations (from my point of view) but I have no comparison to other recent textbooks.
  15. What is her learning style? The ASU course is everything on the computer - you can solve the problems on a piece of paper but you have to enter everything (equations) via the computer. It is based on ALEKS and uses that interface. DS (and I) did their college algebra last year to review for Calculus starting in Aug.(ran out of time). It was good but I thought the interface just slowed me down. ALEKS has free demos. You should see if Mr D has a free demo. I think it would be hard to do a whole complete Precalc course over the summer, You may want to just use Khan.
  16. 1) No the Korean hagwon (cram schools) segment was the weakest part of the series - no good fit to the US market - but it was eye opening to see these teachers pulling in millions of dollars over the years. 2) I didn't know they forced him out until I saw that segment - typical educrats that run our schools
  17. Has anyone else seen this? Worth a discussion if enough folks view it.
  18. My son's best friend goes to a large public school where they encourage pre-AP followed by AP (science) the next year. Seems like overkill but I guess they are trying to get the school average AP scores up.
  19. DS got sick on Thursday (stress??) took APUSH today a little under the weather - he thought it was harder than the practice tests 2 left next week
  20. there should be more of these "private test sites" or maybe CCs test centers stepping up since the public high school thing is such a crap shoot the CB could contact some of the CCs to see if they would be willing to host AP exam testing
  21. if anybody at the school had any compassion they would have let your student take the exam - you weren't actually late for the test start maybe next year at this time - people can post these additional AP rules as well was that a school or CB imposed deadline? Can you still get into a make-up date for this year? http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/public/exam/dates_fees/232552.html
  22. "high school student earning college credits" probably would be a better title for the thread - APs, CLEP are other ways to get college credits while in HS - does it really matter how? In our case, AZ has very limited inexpensive DE classes available so most high achiever B&M students do AP, for the homeschoolers spending $350 per course at the local CC might be the better route versus pricey online AP courses
