  1. Do you live in a community large enough to have a French club? Or, if you have Skype she could join an online French club. I have not retained verbal fluency, but listening to French Canadian radio news broadcasts, and watching French Canadian tv shows helps retain some facility with the language. Here's a link to Radio Canada, which has tv shows, spots, and news in French. http://www.radio-canada.ca/ The accent is different than Francais French, but in real life she is going to need to understand and andconverse in both dialects. I have lost verbal fluency or I would offer to Skype with her. Maybe in a few months I can do so as I am starting studies to regain fluency. Is she reading a fair amount of literature in French each week? Reading will help her retsin the ability to think in French.
  2. I'm sorry you are sick and scared; keep telling yourself that just because he died from pneumonia does not mean you will . Over and over again. Hundreds of times, if necessary. Don't let the scary thoughts in. I'm sorry you lost your father. :( I had pneumonia several years ago, and it was pretty rough. The meds should help, just give them a little time to work.
  3. Yes! It is decorated...with a lizard!!! :p
  4. I have a friend who homeschooled her son until the 9th or tenth grade, then he enrolled in public school because he wanted to play school sports. I think she just provided transcripts, immunization records , birth certificate. He wasn't thrilled about the social aspect of high school, but tolerated it in order to play sports. He graduated on time and now is in university. We use Everest Acadeny as our cover school, it does not reqire a statement of faith, religious curriculum, and we get to choose our own curriculum. The previous suggestions regarding cover schools are are also very good, I considered Dayspring but Everest seemed to be the most "hands off," meaning I was able to pay fees, withdraw from the public school system, and get started. What area of Alabama is she moving to?
  5. Check medications, if applicable. My doc put me on a fairly high dose of wellbutrin a few years ago and I developed a compulsive urge to swallow and clear the throat. It was like restless legs syndrome , only in the throat, lol. Neurologist was baffled, but we cut the dosage in half and the urge disappearred almost overnight. To this day, iI know knowwhen my wellbutrin levels are getting too high because my throat starts acting up. Different meds might cause different actions, movements, or behaviors. More likely though, the tics are are caused by something else, but it never hurts to brainstorm.
  6. Frankly, I'm outraged that anyone told a woman giving bith to a child to make less noise. Sorry, it's a painful business, and I believe that vocalization helps increase the power of the push. We learned this concept in tae kwon do; at the moment of a strike, we make a loud, strong yell that serves to focus power and energy.
  7. I want to ask the pediatrician exactly why she thinks a pillow on the floor is unsafe. Unless you live in an area in which brown recluse spiders and/ or scorpions are really, really abundant, then I just don't get how your arrangement is unsafe. What's safer than the floor?
  8. He's about as excited about new curriculum as I am about the new Minecraft upgrade... :001_rolleyes:
  9. Hello; I am new on the board and don't know you, but wish the best for you and your DH.
  10. I roast it in the oven with olive oil, then put it in spagetti sauce.
  11. I am not a huge Denise Austin fan, but this dvd got good reviews on amazon.com. It's a good price, too:http://www.amazon.com/Denise-Austin-Get-Daily-Dozen/dp/B001GP5TL8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373498549&sr=8-1&keywords=denise+austin+daily+dozen I'd say give it a try.
  12. I do a combination of bodyweight training, weights, yoga, walking, jogging or some other aerobic exercise, to keep fit. I also wear a fitbit, which is basically a pedometer, to track my daily activity. I also mow the lawn and count it as exercise. :o There are a lot of great exercise videos available if you prefer to to exercise at home. I recommend recommend the Video Fitness Fitness forum for all kinds of information and help regarding fitness- related topics. They even have a check-in group for homeschooling moms. :D I just realized I've rambled but didn't answer your question. Yes, get on the treadmill, but do a variety of different types of activities and exercise for optimum strength and health. Some people believe that too much cardio or aerobic activity can raise cortisol and otherwise mess up the endocrine system, but I believe each individual has their unique biochemistry, therefore different types of exercise are beneficial for different people. Good luck, I hope you enjoy fitness as much as I do!
  13. Wow, I am so very sorry. I hope your friend's daughter and family find healing, and (legal) justice for what was done to her. Give that bag a few hard hits for me, please...
  14. I always thought "Hispanic" was a cultural term. After all, so many Hispanic/latin people are actually Caucasian, Asian, and/or African, yet they are all still Hispanic because they grew up in that particular culture. One friend from Chile is red headed, green eyed, yet she is "Latin," another friend from Mexico who is a Native American; he is also Latin.
  15. Anyy of the Walter Farley horse books are good, but my favorite was Man O'War.
  16. Parrothead, you mentioned you have graves eye disease. Are you taking prednisone or a related steriod as treatment? I will wait on your answer for further commentary, except to say that prednisone and other medications can raise blood sugar levels. Unrelated question, are you taking any beta blockers? Unlikely, but they are also known to raise blood sugar levels.
  17. "Draw-ers" is a type of underwear, "droors" is a piece of furniture. Not saying I'm correct, but it's how I pronounce them.
  18. Gosh, I'm sorry. You've already received excellent advice, so I'll just offer hugs and reassurance. Diabetes can be well-managed, but that's a conversation that can be saved until after the shock of diagnosis has worn off.
  19. Ice, ice, and more ice! DH has a bulging disc, and he has several gel packs that he keeps in the freezer and uses twice a day. Also, he elevates his feet whenever possible to take stress off the back; we even bought a sofa with a recliner option so he can put his feet up when he gets home. He goes to yoga about twice a week with me, and says it has helped a lot, but he does not go when his back is acting up. Good luck; it's a long haul, but with diligent care, you can get relief from the pain.
