HELP. My 9yo failed this school year...
IdahoHomeschooler replied to LAmom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have no advice, but I just want to thank everyone on this thread that shared their experiences with struggling learners. I need to print this out so I read it when I'm frustrated. Signed, Starting at the beginning of CLE math and LA with my "3rd grader" -
Yes! Watch it!

Weird situation in nursing class...WWYD?
IdahoHomeschooler replied to Alenee's topic in The Chat Board
I would report her. -
medical people- could you chime in here?
IdahoHomeschooler replied to Just Another Jen's topic in The Chat Board
I'm a nurse. This is totally unacceptable and I would speak with the charge nurse, the unit manager, the nursing supervisor, and hospital heads. My kiddo has been in an icu, I work in an icu, I get it. This is not ok, and I would advocate for my child, and the other patients and families affected by this unprofessional behavior. -
Just how far back should I go? CLE LA placement...
IdahoHomeschooler replied to alisoncooks's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
[quote name="alisoncooks" post="5762331" timestamp=" :grouphug: Yeah... luckily my DD has phenomenal self-esteem :D and isn't bothered at all by her reading skills (or lack of). I seem to be the one who struggles with it (I don't voice my worries to her, of course). But since we're homeschooling, it does sometimes feel like it's a reflection upon me -- which is just silly and I need to let it go! I sat down with LA 1 last night and looked through it. I'm pretty sure I can skip 101 with my DD, maybe 102. Luckily, I had these on hand for youngest DD... so we can go ahead and get a head-start during the rest of the summer. :) I feel ya. I take it waaaaay too personally that she isn't at "grade level." Funnily enough, if there weren't grade level designations on curriculum, I would be mostly happy with the level she works at, because she makes steady progress in all the areas. -
Just how far back should I go? CLE LA placement...
IdahoHomeschooler replied to alisoncooks's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I'm starting at the beginning for my 3rd grader. After looking at the scope and sequence, it just seems as though a lot is covered in that 1st level, that we have not yet covered. I'm hoping we will be able to get thru it quickly, but I haven't seen it yet. I agree, it is discouraging :( -
Supreme Court finds in FAVOR of Hobby Lobby
IdahoHomeschooler replied to StaceyinLA's topic in The Chat Board
From what I have read, this really only applies to IUD's and Plan B. Plan B is available OTC, now, so I doubt most insurances are covering it these days, anyways. All other forms of contraception, including sterilization and most BC pills are covered. So not as big of a 'win' as I initially feared, but I will still plan to give my money to other stores instead of Hobby Lobby. -
Gardeners: Why are all my cucumbers bitter?
IdahoHomeschooler replied to Liz CA's topic in The Chat Board
I haven't tried it, but apparently planting them with sunflowers is supposed to help them be sweeter. They can also use the sunflower stalks as a trellis to climb. -
My chickens were weird last night. Why?
IdahoHomeschooler replied to Ginevra's topic in The Chat Board
Something maybe was in the coop when the first couple of chickens went in. The one on the roost might not have gone in until after whatever it was left, so she didn't get startled. There may have been a chicken turf war going on. They may have decided it was a nice night and slept outside. Or they may have stayed out late and couldn't see their way back in to roost. Chickens are extremely predictable, until they're not ;) -
Are collapsible hoses worth the money?

Dammit, I just bought one today! Guess I'll let you know... -
I am a former goat owner, and I suggest checking out thegoatspot.net for a good forum on goat keeping. It gave me a wealth of info and ideas for my goats.

I have an iPad Air. Love.it. Could use more storage. 16g doesn't seem to go very far these days.

It's not unusual for a pullet who just starting to lay to have some anomalies with the eggs. If the chicken isn't acting otherwise unhealthy, I would leave it to work itself out. If your friend is super concerned about this chicken, then she could try limiting access to light. Chickens need several hours a day of light in order to lay. Honestly, though, in an otherwise healthy chicken, just making sure there is access to calcium (oyster shells or eggshells) and a good quality layer feed should do the trick. It is also possible that the chicken has a faulty system and might never lay typical eggs. I think it is too soon to determine that. I highly recommend checking out the forums at backyardchickens.com . There is a wealth of info there about chickens.

If you were going to sell an iPad Air...
IdahoHomeschooler replied to mysticmomma's topic in The Chat Board
Do you have a local Shop &Swap Facebook group? I would sell there or on Craigslist. -
Thank you all so very much. Updated

Happy Birthday, Rowan! You are a beautiful woman, and I lovelovelove your hair! -
No. No. No. You are not just repeating what the Bible says, you are very deliberately cherry-picking scriptures, taken out of context, in order to line up with your beliefs. This is a VERY dangerous practice, spiritually, and one that I bet has led to manymany former Christians losing their faith. You may be in denial about your anti-Semitism, but it is right.here. in black and white!

do you use audio books?
IdahoHomeschooler replied to bttrflyvld's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I definitely use audiobooks. I really dislike reading aloud, because I end up yawning like crazy, and that makes me feel sleepy. It's very annoying. Audiobooks have been a God-send. I subscribe to Audible, have the SOTW audiobooks, and bought the Little House in the Big Woods audio cd for Christmas. I also use Librivox, which is free, but the format annoys me, so if it's a book that is likely to heard overandoverandover then I splurge for the Audible version. The bonus of the audiobook is that I get to feel all warm and fuzzy listening to books from childhood that I remember my teachers reading to my class. I don't have my dd read along with the audiobook, but I have thought of doing so. I recently downloaded a text-to-speech app that I would like to try out with her. I usually play audiobooks when she is playing or working on an artsy activity. She also has the option of listening on the iPad with headphones, in the event that I just do not want to hear about Jack, Annie, and their friggin Magic Tree House again!lol -
gardening questions....please help me if you can!
IdahoHomeschooler replied to kfeusse's topic in The Chat Board
In zone 5 you likely be more successful with a really early tomato variety. You might have just enough time if you planted seeds now, otherwise look for mature plants next month. For cukes, try a bush variety, as they typically need less grow time before fruiting. Honestly, though, both of these veggies can be difficult if you don't have enough sun, and enough nights above 50 degrees. You could very well do better buying the veggies from a co-op, in bulk. I don't know about the red plastic, as I suspect most of your difficulty would come from lack of heat, so maybe try black plastic. Since this is a home school forum, maybe have it be about science, and do some experimenting. In your situation, which I actually am, as a fellow zone 5er, I would consider building cold frames over the raised beds. This would help "fake" more warm nights for them. Tomatoes and other sun lovers just don't take off here until late June/early July. If it cools off early, we often don't get very much of a tomato harvest. A cold frame would really help extend harvest time. -
I have nothing to offer you in the way of help, but wanted to thank you for making me laugh! I can keep about 3 things going well at any given time. Work has to be one of those things. The other 2 tend to be parenting and schooling. I am in awe of those who are able to "do it all," truly. I'm just not. All of the books and planners in the world are not going to make me what I'm not, and when I finally accepted that (like, a year ago!) I became a much happier person.

Dogs get worms, it happens. There are meds for it. Don't over-react and beat yourself up about it!

If someone said you had cow eyes
IdahoHomeschooler replied to fairfarmhand's topic in The Chat Board
Well, Jersey cows have beautiful eyes, so if that was the type of cow someone had in mind, then I would feel complimented. Or something. -
Totally worth it, IMO. Mine is actually a refurbed one that I have had for at least 10 years, now. If it died tomorrow, I would grieve, then I would buy another Dyson.

Who would you call to fix this drainage issue??
IdahoHomeschooler replied to Moxie's topic in The Chat Board
A good landscaping company should be able to help you out. You may need dirt moved or a different type of drain system installed. -
Child on reflux medications - other options?
IdahoHomeschooler replied to countrygal's topic in The Chat Board
Why not trial the reflux meds for a few months and see if some of the symptoms are helped? If she is able to feel better, her feeding repertoire might improve, making an elimination diet more doable, if you wish to pursue it. I don't know of any non-medical or non-surgical options to "fix" reflux, but I would be thrilled if there was! I hate having reflux, but my Prevacid is a godsend.
