  1. I have found this workbook to be helpful. It starts off slow, and helps build confidence. It also uses a system of "tricks" to learn the facts. My kiddo whips through the pages super fast, and works on one full page a day. We also do other maths, and everything takes her 20 mins, tops. I am so pleased with this book, that I am planning to buy the next book, which covers multiplication facts. The book is also designed to be reproducible, so you can use it with more than one, if you want to photocopy it. It would also be really easy to tear out the pages and put them in a page protector and use dry erase markers.
  2. Ha! No, no you don't ;) Being just a little left puts you in bleeding-heart territory. On the plus side, though, is that it is probably one of the easiest states to homeschool in.
  3. Yep, they have a college down there and everything. They also have the potatoes.
  4. Yeah, there are some, ummmmm, interesting people here. The Aryans used to have a pretty strong presence here, as the now-defunct compound is in this area. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see black people around here! Sadly, it is still something that I notice, but it is becoming much less rare. I have a cousin in an interracial marriage that was shot at when she was up visiting with her husband. It was pretty bad, and happened not all that long ago, unfortunately. I do find it interesting that survivalists have both white suprematists(sp?) and enviromentalist hippies drawn to them. Kind of an interesting combo, lol. I have a relative that makes his living selling gear to survivalists at gun shows, and whatnot. I think he's a kook, but in case he's right, I know where he lives ;), lol. By "other" Idaho, though, I mean the tendency we have to call the northern part of Idaho "North Idaho," like it's its own state. In fact, I remember talk of seceding from southern Idaho, and forming a new state with eastern WA, back in the '80's. The "other" Idaho grows potatoes and Mormons. Us northerners specialize in bigotry and tourism. ;)
  5. I love Sandpoint! It's a pretty short jaunt for me. I will admit to only visiting the southern part of state 1 time, and I was born and raised here!lol I need to see more of this beautiful state.
  6. Well, this guy gets voted into his position. I don't know what the requirements are for his job. Maybe they include bigotry? :confused1:
  7. Hi! Which part of Idaho? The northern part, or the "other" Idaho ;) ?
  8. The HIGs also contain manipulative material that can be copied onto cardstock and used. This site has printable Singapore stuff as well, like the disks. We use Unifix cubes a lot, but you can make do with household items for counters, a clock for telling time, etc. I also have some Math-U-See cubes that we use, but I am planning to get a nice base-10 set.
  9. Get the HIGs. I didn't think that I needed to use them, because it's not like I don't get 1st/2nd grade math :glare:. However, I was running into some issues with my kiddo, and finally dug out the HIGs. Duh. Seriously, they contain a lot of what makes the program "Singaporean." We missed out on A LOT of activities and stuff that we are now having to go back through and do.
  10. These look awesome and are very reasonable. You can buy all of the dvds and music for $30 shipped!
  11. Honestly, it would surprise me if it was coming from the CDA police dept, but it's not a shocker coming from the KCSD. Their office may be physically located in CDA, but they are "the rest of N. Idaho."
  12. Ha! I'm at a bit of a loss, because I don't like this sheriffs dept *or* the BSA. I do find it somewhat ironic that the BSA just can't win- too gay or not gay enough, lol. All of the local reporting comes out of Spokane, where they have legalized gay marriage, so it will be interesting to see the backlash against the sheriffs dept over this. Admittedly, I giggle a little thinking about how the BSA may be getting support from gay-rights activists over this! Signed, Liberal Idahoan Who Supports Gay Marriage ( and legalizing pot!)
  13. Ugh. This state is just so ridiculous sometimes :/ I swear we do some things just to be the exact opposite of Washington. Idaho used to be so awesome in its individuality, but it is losing that, I feel. Sadly, I'm not surprised that this sheriffs department has done this. I've never been a fan of them.
  14. It is legal in the state that borders mine, and I work in that state. Unfortunately, I can still be terminated for using it, because it is still not legal nationally. I would totally use it if I didn't want to risk my job. I have several issues that mj could help manage.
  15. Ellie, how did you go about getting extra arch supports in your Tevas?
  16. I work in a NW hospital, and there have been some changes in what swag gets handed out in the last decade or so. The diaper bag/formula freebies have been scaled way back. Enfamil switched to a reusable shopping bag thing for a while. I believe it was Similac that has the little bin for baby supplies. They usually have coupons for formula and other baby stuff. Not very many samples anymore, but occasionally some baby wipes or butt cream samples get included. We provide a fairly decent breastfeeding kit from Enfamil to our NICU families. It comes in an insulated soft-sided cooler, contains a reusable ice pack and milk collection bottles, a collapsing water bottle for mom, a small can of formula, and some coupons. Enfamil tends to have the better swag, but they lost the WIC contract, so we mostly get Similac stuff now.
  17. Yes. I have also heard, though have not done so, is that if you brood and raise them together, guineas will learn to come to the coop and roost, like chickens do. Otherwise, I believe that they prefer to roost in trees at night.
  18. I'm a neonatal nurse, and we deliver IV antibiotics thru central lines all the time. I have had patients under 400 grams (not a typo!) that have received antibiotics via this route, so it is not at all unusual in an adult. My own child had a permanent central line for several years, and unfortunately required antibiotics periodically, delivered via that central line.
  19. I'm not sure of the best way to say this, and please know that I am being kind in my intentions by recommending that you consider a counselor to help you with this stage in your life. The "Letting Go" stage of raising young adults can be truly challenging for some parents. You have many posts/threads centered around this theme with regards to your older children. A message board is great for support, but a therapist or counselor can really help with this transition in a very meaningful way.
  20. Hi! Another single parent homeschooler here. :seeya: I'm a nurse working 2 12 hour shifts a week to support myself and my daughter. My sister watches my daughter while I work, but she doesn't do any of the schooling for us. I have control issues, lol. Honestly, I'm a bit of a reluctant homeschooler, but there just aren't any other acceptable options for us. My biggest struggle is that I have an "ideal" vision of what I want homeschooling to be, but the reality is nowhere close. I'm struggling to let go of that ideal, and accept that what we are doing is the best that we are able to do.
  21. Apparently, there is a nationwide shortage of saline. I work in a hospital, and there is issues with the IV saline, but I didn't think about it affecting any over-the-counter products. Contact lens wearers might want to start hoarding the saline!
