  1. Best money I ever spent. I had it done 10 years ago. I was very near-sighted, and had astigmatism. The procedure corrected both. The recovery was about 24 hours of wearing protective lenses and special eye covers, and putting eye drops in frequently. There was a little discomfort that a dose of tylenol handled. It felt like I had been on the lake all day without sunglasses, like my eyes were a little sunburned. I could see quite clearly a few hours after the surgery was done. I had dry eyes for a while, but they recommended some special eye drops that really helped with that. At the time, the cost for the doctor I used was about $1400 for both eyes.
  2. Instead of giving veggie recommendations, I'd rather you sat down with your family and thought about the veggies you all eat regularly, and if there are any new ones that you are curious about and might like to try. It would also be helpful to find out what growing zone you are in, as that determines, to a degree, the type of veggies that you can grow, and the best times to plant them. Square foot gardening is a great technique that I would recommend. The book will guide you thru site selection, garden bed preparation, soil and amendments, choosing plant varieties, planting times and spacing, and a whole bunch else. Also, consider planting some fruits. Most berries are relatively easy to grow, and have the added benefit of being perennials, so you plant them once and harvest every year. Rhubarb and asparagus are perennials, also, if you like either of them, it would be a good idea to plant them next year, as it takes a couple of years to get a good harvest from asparagus. Another consideration is whether or not organic veggies/fruits are important to you. Personally, I am comfortable using 'artificial' fertilizers for some things, but I never use non-organic pesticides or weed-deterrents. I generally buy plants and seeds from the local big-box stores and nurseries, but occasionally I will want to try a new variety that I can only get online. The types of veggies/fruits that I typically grow in my shorter growing season (zone 5) are: tomatoes, zucchini, pumpkin, other misc squash, bok choi, swiss chard, lettuce, carrots, beets, onions, garlic, asparagus, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and others that I can't think of right now. I usually have to look for varieties that match up to my growing season, which is pretty short for some veggies like tomatoes. Sign up for some seed catalogs. They don't usually send them out until the first of the year, but they will be helpful in providing lots of info about different plant varieties available and their growing requirements.
  3. Humane is what gives them the best, safest life that you can provide. Yes, the tractor would be better than free-ranging in a dangerous area. Electric netting is a great thing, if that is possible for you.
  4. I would suggest pushing to use your DH as donor, as that would be in your comfort range, in an already uncomfortable situation. If that is not as successful as you would hope, then explore the possibility of an outside donor. My understanding is that there is also a pill form available, or soon to be available, so that if you should require a further donor, it would likely be anonymous. Cdiff is a PITA, pardon the pun. You deserve to be rid of it.
  5. LOL! This is soooo true! To the OP, it is quite easy to breeze through level 1. We don't do it everyday, and we are half-way through level 1. I intend to finish both levels this year. We have the FLL 1/2 book.
  6. It isn't always possible to control or minimize stress in our lives, obviously. The best way to counter it, though, is through really good self-care. So make a list of the things that you do that you really enjoy and that charge your batteries. Add on some things that you think you might like and want to try. Make yourself a priority. This is probably the hardest thing to learn to do. It is so easy to put yourself on the backburner when you have kids, because they always have something that demands MOREMOREMORE of your time, energy, money, sanity, etc. Do you walk alone or with someone? Walking can be a good way to make time for friends that will get out and walk with you. Spending time with friends is really good self-care.Try and find a nearby yoga class if you can swing it financially. If not, get a dvd or stream it online. Yoga is a fabulous thing to do for yourself. Go to bed earlier. Eat better food, and eat regularly. Get outside for a little bit everyday. Grow some plants, indoors or out. Having and tending to plants can be very soothing. Take hot baths with epsom salts- very relaxing! Get a massage. If you can't afford one, ask for one as a gift. Pedicures are great, if you aren't freaked out by your feet being touched. Your mileage may vary with these suggestions, but the point is to do more of what you like, and make it a PRIORITY.
  7. I just saw that Walmart has a pulse oximeter. It might be more than you want to spend, as it was around $30, but she would probably get a kick out of it. It would actually measure a pulse as well as blood oxygen levels, and it is non-invasive as it just clips on a finger.
  8. There are several mechanisms of the pill that make it effective. If you are taking it consistently, and not taking any other meds or supplements that can interfere with the efficacy of the pill, then I wouldn't worry too much about fertility signs. Most pill failure is caused by "user error."
  9. If you were local I could totally hook you up with ducks, lol. I need to post some on Craigslist, myself!
  10. Poor duck. I'm glad that he has made friends with the cats, but he really needs another duck or two for companionship and mating. Maybe someone on Craigslist has some that you could get? Or even consider re-homing him to someone with a duck flock. I am worried that your cat could get hurt pretty badly from the mating efforts. I have seen what kind of a toll male ducks can have on the female ducks, when there aren't enough females for the males. I have had male ducks kill females before from mating. My male ducks mate several times a day and I'm not sure that your poor kitty is up for that!
  11. Skip the home remedies and go get this looked at. You have a painful infection in your hand.
  12. You need the U.S., unfortunately. It's very doubtful that the bleeding you had was AF. Sounds like the miscarriage is incomplete, and some tissue remains. On another message board that I frequent, 2 of the posters have been going through something quite similar to what you are dealing with. One ended up with an accreta and decided on an hysterectomy. The other had a d&c that was incomplete, and a recent endometrial biopsy confirmed that there was necrotic embryonic tissue present that was missed in the d&c. She is also suspected of having an accreta. Currently, she is trying to work out a surgery date, and hopes to retain her uterus. Both of these women are grand multiparas, like yourself. I'm sorry for your loss.
  13. Sorry, I can't find any info on it. The server just might be down, but I'm concerned that google doesn't have any cache of her website. This site has a lot of info on math journals/notebooks and this one lists journal prompts from the calico cookie owner, Terry.
  14. No contact is only no contact, if there is no contact. By replying, you are making contact, which is counter-productive to no contact. You cannot control this other person and their toxic behavior, but you can control your own toxic behavior. Delete any further emails, don't even read them. I agree with changing settings in your email if you don't feel that you have the self-control to keep from reading them. Read The Dance of Anger by Harriet Lerner so that you can understand the dynamic and learn to disengage yourself from it. She is attempting to triangulate you and your husband. Again, you cannot control her or her actions, but you can control your own and learn not to react.
  15. When my daughter was much younger, she was worked up as a potential transplant recipient. When I read the summary for this novel, I did begin to feel anxiety. It brought me back to that time when I had to think about the reality of organ donation, and the possibility that I could spend months praying for someone else to lose their baby, so that mine could have their liver :/ I did read this book today, in spite of my initial emotional reaction. It's not the best book that I have read, but it is certainly an important one. I'm glad the OP pushed ahead and read it.
  16. Yes! I'm an adoptive parent, and feel that this case really stresses the importance of ALL adoptions being conducted in a legal and ETHICAL manner. It is the only way for everybody to win.
  17. Can we get an amen? ;) This pretty much describes my experience growing up with Christianity, and some of the reasons I struggle with Christianity today.
  18. Regarding Lot sleeping with his daughters. Here is a perfect example of why we need to read the word of God very carefully. I admit, I missed this also. It wasn't until I heard Gregory Koukl from http://str.org speak on this in a podcast that I realized how carelessly I read sometimes. Let's carefully read Gen 19:30. It states that the firstborn told the younger they should sleep with their father to preserve their father's line. So we have the daughters plotting this thing - not Lot. Secondly, they decide to get Lot drunk in order to do this. Why? I believe it's because they know Lot would not participate otherwise. Now let's read verse 33: "...he (meaning Lot) did not know when she lay down or when she got up." This same, exact line is repeated when the younger daughter sleeps with Lot in verse 35. Now, regardless of whether or not you believe this could happen, this is what God's word states. Lot did not know what happened either time. He was blameless in God's sight and therefore still righteous. I pondered this after having never actually picked up on these statements before. I asked myself, could this really happen. Then I remembered getting really hammered one night in my youth. My brother told me I came home so drunk I didn't know where my bedroom was or the bathroom. He had to escort me to both. I don't remember that. All I remember is the fact that I talked to Ralph all morning until 10AM the next day! I never got that drunk again because I didn't like not remembering my actions." " Ummmm, my experience has been that if a man is drunk to the point he is completely incapacitated, then he is *completely* incapacitated, IYKWIM. More than likely, Lot was a good deal buzzed, had always thought his daughters were pretty hot, and went for it. What the hell, he could always blame it on the alcohol! After all, he was willing to let the whole mob have a piece of his girls, why shouldn't he get a little action? Besides, his god obviously approved! Win-win! Seriously, though, these apologetic justifications and spins on these stories are completely disturbing, probably more so than the stories themselves.
  19. Is it just me, or does anyone else find these "apologetics" posts even more disturbing than the OT stories?!
  20. Here ya go, hope it works! I tried to hyper-link them, but that didn't work. If it works, and you want the rest of the pages, let me know.
  22. I was able to access the thread using google cache. Kind of a PITA, but it worked.
