  1. She can always put in a request to The Book Samaritan for materials - they exist just to help out needy home educators world-wide.
  2. I have an ongoing craving for Chinese food - I need it about every 2-3 months and have for years. I think it's the MSG I'm craving in it.
  3. I've come to the conclusion that if we don't get onto a family schedule, things are going to go just as they did last year - nothing got done, the house was a wreak and dd slept most of the day and kept us up at night. So....how the heck do you implement a family schedule? And get a kid who has never been scheduled in her life to abide by it?
  4. Dd was born just after the cut-off here {5 by Sept. 1st for K}, and then we started a year early as she was ready. So she is Sept. 2006, 2nd
  5. That I can remember, we read: Harry Potter #1, The Metamorphosis, Ender's Game, and some Shakespeare {our research paper had to be off these}. This was AP English 4 about 10 years ago fwiw.
  6. Black Friday is a good time, if you're willing to wait that long. I got mine {regular kindle 3g with keyboard} for about $60 last year after a coupon and a BF deal.
  7. I'm slowly coming to grips with the fact that I appear to be losing my hearing, or at least the comprehension of sounds / voices. I'm almost 28 :glare: and this has been going on for the last several years and worsening. I'm to the point now where if there is ANY background noise at all, I can't pick out the voice of the person talking to me & understand what they are saying. It's all just jumbled noise. If dd whispers I can't hear it, even if she does it in my ear. Part of my mom's side of the family has the trait of early hearing loss, and I'm beginning to think I've inherited it. I want to learn ASL & how to lip read now before I lose any more hearing. I know for kids with hearing issues, they get services through the public school system, etc. Where do adults go to get help learning how to cope with hearing loss? FWIW a hearing aid is out of the question - my insurance won't even cover hearing checks for adults {medicaid} much less hearing aids.
  8. :grouphug::grouphug: If they don't reverse it, you may be able to get a portion of it released if it's a joint account - i.e. part of the funds {normally half} are yours and they cannot hold them for dh's debt
  9. I would go the no-insurance route if it were costing that much, honestly. Find out your local walk-in clinics and how much they charge for a cash pay visit - there will be somewhere that is lower cost. The other thing I would look into is insurance for the kids through the state. I'm not sure what it's called there {here it's CHIP} but you can make a LOT {depending on the size of your family up to 6 figure salary} and it's only $50 a month for all the kids with tiny co-pays.
  10. I write it that way as it is just how I feel most comfortable. I started in college when studying theology as a professor always wrote it that way. Now it's mostly just habit :D
  11. I have the same problem with those! My hearing is not what it used to be and I really worry about them as I can't hear them at all.
  12. I an just in awe right now :D I spent this afternoon boxing up books to mail out to the Book Samaritan tomorrow, and sorting out things to donate to charity / thrift shops. While doing so I was wondering what I could get for my daughter for her upcoming birthday in a week, as finances are still tight and I haven't found anything in my thrift shop runs. This evening, the doorbell rings. The neighbor from next door would like to give something to my daughter, if I'll allow it. Turned out she and her son upgraded her granddaughter from her little girl room to a teen room {she is turning 10} and she thought my daughter might like it. So she gave it to us....free. It's the exact bedroom set my daughter picked out from the Rooms to Go Kids catalog. Bookcase that looks like a dollhouse, pink and white vanity with a stool, all the bedding, two rugs, and even the full size bed with the frame. She probably will bring the matching little table and chairs over in a few days, but she is still deciding if she wants to get rid of those as well or not. I'm just in awe. G-d is good and he provides! ETA: I forgot to mention, all this is like new. They only have custody of the granddaughter one weekend a month, so it was rarely used.
  13. I ordered from SL and it finally arrived today. I ordered 4 books - a, b, c & d. 4 Arrived today but one was not the book ordered. So I got A, B, C & X instead. Is this common for SL to make mistakes with the order? And do they normally have you return the book they sent in error? I really don't want to have to pay shipping to return as it's a larger HC book. Book X was already on my need list as well and cost about 4 times what book D I ordered did. If I'm going to have to pay shipping to return it, then I'd rather just keep this book and re-order the book I originally ordered.
  14. blah...I got up early this morning intending to leave dd here with grandma and head to the local homeschool shop. Instead dd woke up as I was about to leave {I was running late}, and the two mystery bug bites on her hand were much worse, plus she had another on her bum. And she's still complaining of being itchy all over. I am really really really hoping it's not chicken pox {what does that look like anyways?}, as they have not gone away even with liberal application of cortaid cream yesterday. So today's plans are canceled - I think I might take a trip to the thrift store I was as yesterday for the half off sale - the day after a sale is always a good time to go as they put so much new stuff out to replace what sold.
  15. I'd rather sign up for a loving family with two {or even more:D} wives than have kids dealing with a divorce, an exwife and a current wife. Or dealing with a father {Or mother for that matter} who was seeing someone on the side because they didn't want said divorce. People can love more than one person at a time and for different reasons.
  16. I'd have no problem with it. Really, is there that much difference to most people between them taking on a surrogate and adding a sister wife? It all amounts to the same thing in my eyes. Is there maybe a chance wife #1 was infertile or couldn't have children for some reason? I do know several couples who decided to take on a sister-wife because the wife couldn't bear children, they still loved each other very much, and wanted biological children.
  17. Today was half off at our local thrift shop too - I got a bunch of clothes for dd, a bunch of readers, a Math-U-See Beta student book, a VP K workbook, and a VCR for $25 :D
  18. For your homeschooling needs, put a request in to The Book Samaritan. They are a wonderful charity that provides homeschooling books to those in need globally, no questions asked. I would put in a request now if you need it in January, as they take about a month and that way you have time to request again if they don't have what you wanted.
  19. She's great with everything else. She doesn't mind writing for her reading comprehension book or her english book most of the time but those are mostly single words. Her handwriting book right now she is still working on pages of single letters. But 90% of her letters are capitals and her letter sizing is irregular to say the least. Maybe I will take a little break from it for a while and then come back to it.
  20. She does some writing in her English program, but no copywork. She will be 6 in 10 days. I'm really trying to work with her on writing the letters correctly and using lowercase rather than all capitals.
  21. I was 16 when mine developed, and it worsened as I got older. Prior to age 16, I was a peanut butter fiend!
  22. Not sure if you are looking for secular or not, but Behold and See 1 & 2 from Catholic Heritage Curricula are almost exactly what you are describing. They aren't very Catholic either - a quote here and there that is easy to skip is all.
  23. Try this: http://clubs.scholastic.com/rewards/pdfs/TAT_coupon.pdf You'll want to call the 1-800 number listed on the flyer - home educators can't fully sign up online {or at least they used to not be able to}. If you do the referral bit you'll also get 10 free books for your "classroom" and 250 bonus points which you can use to buy more books. For the referral info to get the bonus - pm me :D Enjoy!
  24. If you are signed up with Scholastic Book Clubs as a homeschool educator, they are doing a really good deal on the newest Wimpy kid book. It's only $8.49 with free delivery and you also get a free sneak-peek book featuring never-before-seen comics from book #7. They also have a lot of $1 books - they make great stocking stuffers :D
  25. Plastic Fairies? I need a couple for dd's birthday cake which is a Rainbow Magic Fairies cake.
