  1. I honestly have no idea what snap circuits are - can you link something explaining them? I'll check them out! How thinky are they? - dd gets frustrated very easily due to her ASD.
  2. She'd love it, but I don't think she's mature enough for one yet, as she still tends to be quite hard on things. She is allowed to use mine when she wants but only stories I have pre-screened and put in a section just for her. In another year or two when she is more mature and I can trust her to care for it properly, definitely going on the list.
  3. I guess I should have mentioned it needs to be things available at a mall, Walmart, retail store, etc :001_huh: Dd is on the list to be adopted for Christmas assistance with a local group's Angel Tree program, which is why I need the list by next week. We're supposed to put 1 high end item {their example was a Wii or Playstation}, several smaller items, and then clothing needs. I love this idea, and I may keep it back for me if it's not too pricey. Part of her request for moving is to have a "Princess" room. I don't know that it would work well for this though. Yes, quite a bit of help. She LOVES dress-up, and would really enjoy some dress up stuff. She did just get new to her bedding thanks to our neighbor, but the rest of what you mentioned would work perfectly. She has a subscription to Zoobooks and really likes it. But the organization can't give out addresses to the people picking, so I don't think that will work. Thanks though!
  4. I'm trying to make a possible list for dd for Christmas...and I got NADA. I need some concrete ideas within a week, so I'm on a deadline. Dd is newly a young 6, and is a voracious reader. She likes Barbies, board games, crafts & science stuff, and anything to do with Girl Scouts. The only thing I know for sure to put on her list is an American Girl Doll & books, but other than that I'm clueless. We don't do Bratz dolls or anything similar, and prefer wholesome educational stuff when possible. We are somewhat conservative in values, and I prefer toys that reflect that. Ideas? Huge plus if it doesn't take up a ton of space - we are moving some time in the next 2 months and I am not sure which house yet - one is about 400 sqft SMALLER than this one so I don't want anything big. FWIW, I took her toy shopping for ideas, and even she didn't find anything she really liked {other than a 4ft tall barbie house :glare: } ETA: I guess I should have mentioned it needs to be things available at a mall, Walmart, retail store, etc :001_huh: Dd is on the list to be adopted for Christmas assistance with a local group's Angel Tree program, which is why I need the list by next week. 5. Today? Running errands and getting rid of stuff from the garage. Trying to get ready to move. Lunch? McDonalds :D Plans for the Weekend? Well hopefully tomorrow dd and I will make the Girl Scout Expo for part of the day. Other than that - rest & cleaning. Maybe some packing too - I'm trying to pack things we don't need on a regular basis so that moving will be easier.
  6. :iagree::iagree: And if the manager doesn't do anything I'd call the county health officer - that is a HUGE violation of health codes
  7. :grouphug::grouphug: What field is he in again? Are you willing to move?
  8. dd is selling Girl Scout nuts / candy, and it's not a booth sale, but we can sell online. We don't attend a local church or have family willing to buy either. We're a week in and her only sale is me....which she is really disappointed about! How do you get sales when it's not a booth and you're not involved in the community? Is there some trick I don't know?
  9. Very low-income right now here too. The only thing we do is Scouts - they offer scholarships for activities :D Plus dd can sell cookies & nuts and raise funds that way.
  10. So far my day has consisted of just resting - I'm playing hooky :D I was supposed to run errands today, but I was just too tired. Dd is improving slowly - she sounds worse but is actually better. We're in hopes of making the local Girl Scout Expo on Saturday at least for a bit. We've never taken a Christmas {or any other holiday} vacation :001_smile:
  11. Another Grave's Disease Hyperthyroid here. I didn't have any hyperthyroid symptoms either until I went into thyroid storm because it got so out of control. I get the flutters you describe too. I've been on thyroid meds now for 5 years. I plan to stay them on indefinitely - I do not want to surgically remove it and taking radioactive iodine to burn it out isn't an option due to allergy. As for your worries, I did gain a bunch when put on Methimizole. But I'd lost 50+ pounds in 60 days from the Thyroid Storm, so putting weight back on was normal. I do have a lot of trouble losing weight now, but I maintain wonderfully. As for the mood issues - everyone is different. I tend to roller coaster in my moods more now, but I have less totally incapacitating down periods - KWIM?
  12. You can do Sonlight really cheaply with a little work. Find a used IG and buy it, either here or off of Homeschool Classifieds. For the books, if you have a really good library you can just borrow them, but I'd buy if you can. Thrift shop, use paperbackswap, yard sale, etc and you can find most of them really cheap / free, especially for the lower grades. I've also picked up quite a few of them through Scholastic book clubs too. Buy off Amazon for the rest - they are normally cheaper than buying through Sonlight. One thing I do is pick up extra copies at thrift shops and sell / trade them for ones I haven't been able to find. The really nice thing about Sonlight is that if you buy all the books used and the IG used, and then sell as a set when you're finished with it, you normally break even or even make a little. I am doing Core B this year, and I think it might have cost me maybe $200? And I ended up buying most of the science new as we decided to use it late.
  13. :iagree: I really wish I'd tried Sonlight earlier - we absolutely LOVE it!
  14. Khols had a bunch on clearance a while back - both boys and girls. I saw Carter's for $4-5 for sets.
  15. Not a good day here - dd is sick with the bug I had and we've been dealing with her & a fever of nearly 104 all night & today. School is canceled on account of sickness, and mama is still recuperating too.
  16. I'm pretty sure they still are, but I think now they don't send anything {tax receipt, etc} unless you request it. You might try asking on their facebook page.
  17. I'd be seriously upset, and I'm not even Catholic anymore. There are much better ways of teaching about that topic.
  18. I really liked it, and I normally can't stand the british tv shows :D
  19. Not everyone has the opportunity to just "get a job", plus you have to factor in the loss of assistance if one does. If I get a job, I lose my medicaid. If I don't have medicaid, I can't afford my meds. Without my meds I end up in the hospital. And I'm sure there are others in the same boat. So getting a job would not only cost me $$$ but my health as well, and as a single parent I have to stay healthy - there isn't anyone else to care for dd. Plus in this economy I seriously question his "just go get an extra job" theory - NOWHERE here is hiring unless you go to the oilfield over an hour south of here. Yes, it is perfectly LEGAL to walk away from most debts after the statute of limitations has expired. In my state that is 7 years from the last payment made. Some states are as little as 4 years. If your statute of limitations is 7 years, and you are 6.5 years in and then make a payment, you start the whole 7 years over again. You'll still get the occasional phone call, but just reply that the statute of limitations has expired on that debt and you are no longer legally liable for it. It should drop off your credit report at that time as well. This doesn't apply to federal student loans fwiw.
  20. My niece supposedly likes these {she is 8yo}. Are they decent? Would you give them to a 8yo girl? Just from reading the summary of book #1 it doesn't look like something I'd buy, but :001_huh: If not, why? And what would you suggest instead?
  21. I haven't but I have done a Brownie Journey with my dd and the format is the same for all the journey programs. You can change as much as you want, as long as you still in some way complete the base requirements. The requirements are normally in the leader's guide before the sample sections but I can't recall the exact name of the section.
  22. :iagree::iagree: I grew up in San Benito, TX and for a while it was this way when they were having the riots at the high school {we lived less than a block away} You learn REALLY quick to pay attention to what people are wearing and what the new grafitti is - it can save your life.
  23. This may be a bit fuzzy as I'm sick Well, first off he is not a fan of public assistance, which is crucial for the extreme low income to get back onto their feet. The #1 baby step in my plan after doing a budget is to see what assistance you're eligible for and thus STRETCH your budget. The system is there to help but you have to make it work for YOU. The #2 baby step in my plan is to get a paid for house by whatever means possible UNLESS you are living in Section 8 or getting your rent paid via Section 8. The largest chunk of low-income budgets goes toward housing - so getting into something paid for frees up a lot of funds. It might be a used mobile home, or maybe buy a cheap foreclosure, etc. Live in an RV on someone else's property, be a house parent, live-in security, etc. He also never really mentions the statute of limitations on debts, and that often if it is a large debt {normally medical or CC} and close to the statute of limitations it's better to IGNORE it. If you begin making payments after 6.5 years, and the statute of limitations is 7 years, you have just restarted the 7 year period over again. I also don't recommend his investing step - if you are very low income and receiving assistance, investing is often an immediate disqualification for assistance. If you really want to invest, do so in a method NOT in a bank - i.e. buy coins, start a business and keep the investments in the business name, etc. That's all I can think of right now...I'll probably flesh this out more when I'm not so sick.
  24. I've been sick for the last 3 days with a cold / sinus thing, and now I'm running a 102 temp and have been all day. I have a suppressed immune system thanks to my thyroid meds, and right now I don't have insurance to go to the doctor. I can't take OTC meds and push through it as they are contraindicated with my thyroid issues. I have a LOT of things I need to be doing, like finding us a house and getting moved, but I can't while sick. Could I get some prayers that 1. My fever breaks and the cold goes away & 2. that neither my mother or daughter catch this
