  1. Your comment about your age reminded me of how my aunt always tells me, "Just wait until you hit your 40s! You won't care what anyone thinks anymore and you'll just say what you feel." As for your MIL, after 12 years of keeping your mouth shut, I would have done the same thing. She is slandering your character to the younger children who are still young and may not initially understand an impromptu visit by your older neices. You did not throw insults, just firmly stated your case in defense of yourself. There's nothing wrong with that, IMHO. Also, DH supports you... that is wonderful! Sometimes people cannot be allowed to continue with bad behaviors when it's hurting others. I don't see anything wrong with your call.
  2. My youngest likes Curious George, Elmo videos, Sesame Street, and Clifford. The oldest loves Magic School Bus (in fact, he's watching an episode right now), Zoobomafoo, Preshistoric Planet, Mighty Machines videos, and anything Planet Earth (can you tell he loves nature/science?). We don't watch much TV in our house, but these are the shows I'll allow if they ask to watch something.
  3. My goal is to have us begin by 9. Some mornings it becomes 9:30 though since I have a 2yo.
  4. I'm so sorry to hear this. I can't imagine how tough it was/is for you to hear him say those things. What seems difficult now will probably be a blessing later - for all of you. I hope you and your family are able to find peace with all the changes you're a-daughter has brought to your lives.
  5. I'm so happy for you! There's nothing more magical than the glimmer in a child's eyes when a book grabs them!!!! I've heard absolutely wonderful things about these books. Hooray for you and your son!
  6. My son LOVES these, but the sentence fragments and poor grammar drive me nuts!
  7. We've had Travelers through GEICO for almost 4 years now without any issues.
  8. We do as it's a sign of respect as other posters have said.
  9. Wow!!! I feel for you and your DH! Like your husband, I went into education to make a difference, but it's nearly impossible to do so I've learned, precisely because of admin like your husband's. They tie your hands in too many ways. I'm so sorry he's dealing with this... I can't even offer advice because it's extremely difficult to find teaching jobs elsewhere right now. After all I learned as a teacher, it's prompted me to homeschool. The state of education just continues to decline. It's incredibly sad. Wishing you all the best! :grouphug:
  10. I love Adelaide!!! I wanted that for the girl I thought for sure I was having... his name is Nolan. :D:D I also love Josephine, Gwendolyn, Charlotte, Abigail, Mary, Camille, and Jocelyn. Girls names are fun!
  11. Starting year 2 here! I feel so fortunate to be amongst so many veterans and all your wisdom! :)
  12. We LOVE Burlington, VT!!!! You've received great suggestions with the Sherlburne Farm and museum. Ben & Jerry's is fun too for kids. Just walking Market St. in Burlington is great. If you have time, take Route 100 South from Burlington... absolutely stunning drive! Have fun!
  13. Sorry about the confusion with the Standards/US question in my OP! I think my fingers were typing the reverse of what my brain was thinking. I'm happy that switching to the Standards at level 3 will work out fine because that was my plan, and I was hoping to not have to rebuy the level 2 ones I already have. Thank you KarenNC for the helpful links!
  14. Such terribly sad news. Praying for all of you as you struggle with the pain of this.
  15. I would have to say all of them... I really do not like cleaning... I would LOVE to have a maid.
  16. All the stores around me except for Food Lion & Walmart double. Most are up to $.99, one is only up to $.60. They all do BOGO often, so with coupons, that can equal free. One store triples once a month (Harris Teeter); however, they've recently instituted Super Doubles where they'll double up to $1.98. That's happening right now, and it lasts a week. I don't know what I'd do without my coupons... they save me incredible amounts of money.
  17. If we've been using the standard editions of Singapore (1 & now 2), can I switch to the US edition for 3? I'm thinking ahead... Or, should I just stick with what's been working? I know the US one includes more topics; are there that many more? Thanks!
  18. :bigear: I was just going to ask this! Thank you! Can't wait to hear the responses! :) My son is exactly the same.
  19. We are going to start workboxes soon, so I can't say for sure if it will work for us; however, it struck me immediately as making so much sense for my brain and for my older son. Ds is fidgity, always wanting to know "are we done yet?" and works well with visual things. For us, it seems (in theory) the perfect fit. After reading about and researching it, I'm going to give it a try. If I find his interests being pulled another way, I believe the boxes will provide a great opportunity for me to incorporate other avenues to explore those interests since some of the boxes are for "fun" (although still educational) stuff. As others have said, I think they'll provide us the chance to add in those fun things which I can cater to his interests or use to enhance our current curriculum. It's okay if workboxes aren't right for your family. It's whatever works best for you and your children. Who knows? I may be switching things up for us halfway through the year! :)
  20. The only path I think my parents had for me was for me to attend and graduate from college. I was always the "academic" type, so they expected high grades always, and as a result of the smarts, I had to attend college. However, I was never told "be a doctor, lawyer, etc". I attended college, graduated, and then went on to receive a M.Ed. I guess I fullfilled their requirements. Someone mentioned religion... I know they expected me to remain a Catholic. I left it in college, yet I never stopped believing in God. We're now part of a non-denominational church, so as heartbreaking as it was at first for my family (including grandparents), my mom is content that I still have God in my life.
  21. No clue as to what to do, but wishing you all the best and hope your dd is okay!!!! Keep us posted.
  22. Thank you so much for posting this! We grew them for the first time this year, and we have 3 that we're just looking at because we're afraid to pick them too soon!
  23. Since we're re-doing the school room, and it's a complete disaster, I can't change anything until I'm sure I really have all I need! I'm not sure if I even have everything... this process is taking longer than I thought because I keep changing my mind about how I want the room to be. Dh is not very enthusiastic about that! ;) I'll get there by September though!
