  1. If you could only pick three books to use for your high school World History curriculum, what would you choose?

  3. My oldest child turns 10 this week and It's had me thinking a lot about our homeschooling journey. She attended private Montessori school from 2 1/2 until 5 1/2. Then public school until the December of 3rd grade when we pulled her out to homeschool. During her public school time we did "afterschooling". We are entering our 3rd year of Homeschooling. We've (DH and I) have been kicking around several ideas of high school. 1) Homeschool all the way through, continue with our ALE and use thar "school" for her to obtain her diploma. 2) Homeschool until 10th grade intensively then have her start taking classes at the local community college and homeschool as needed for other subjects. 3) Have her attend a private school for High School, last time I checked there is a local school that follows a classical approach. 4) Have her attend public high school.
  4. Let me frame this post. Life is grand. We are having a fabulous year. The BEST yet. So please read this post within the context of the hopeful smile that I feel as I write it. :001_smile: ===================== The longer I homeschool, the more clearly I see the two ditches flanking my path. (I used to see them as two opposites that could be merged by applying enough effort. I can't for the LIFE of me figure out why I thought that was a good idea. If I HAD found a way to merge the ditches, then there would have been NO MORE DRY GROUND in between them to stand on! :lol: I would be left standing in the mud forever with NO where to go. SO - NOT any more; I have no desire to merge the two sides. NOW I just want to appreciate them and figure out ways to be at peace with them. I don't want to change them or their courses; I want to change me. :001_smile:) On the one side, I see a delight-directed education. Days filled with interesting activities, inspiring conversations, and a deep interaction with ideas that grow the intellect as well as the soul. And on the other, I see the high-school curriculum. Tests, courses, plans. All of the hoops that prove competence. I get that - I GET why it's important! I really do! I also think I "get" the notion of the high path between the two; the compromise - a willingness to cede to the reality that left and right can't actually ever meet coupled with the reality that once you find yourself as far south as you can go, the only direction you CAN go in is NORTH; there is just no more "southness" available. Weird, but true. But even within the context of opposites, there are disappointments: Infinity is an idea; you can't actually ever GO THERE - so the mathematical notation always has a soft parenthesis() - never a concrete bracket []. There is just no satisfying end to the pursuit. Once you get tired of heading in the direction of negative infinity, the only place to GO is in the positive direction: even that bouncing exploration can lose it's luster if you've already explored the positive direction before. Neither is incredibly satisfying once you understand more fully the nature of your pursuit. :tongue_smilie: So I think I GET it! :001_smile: I don't need to debate standards vs. delight-directed learning. BUT I was wondering where you gals turn for inspiration when you find that you've just headed too far in one direction with a kid. How do you swing the pendulum back toward the "wonder" side? How do you find peace in minor course correction? (Cause I'm sadly just getting to the point where I see changes as a ton of work. ;)) I know how to DO it; I just want to feel BETTER about doing it?   5. Hi! One of my homeschool groups is doing a Meet and Greet event at a local bookstore in a couple of weeks. We will be talking to shoppers about homeschooling and featuring literature from our group, HSLDA, etc. on our table as well as "homeschooling books." Well, aside from The Well-Trained Mind (which will be featured on the table) what other books do you recommend for an outright newbie to homeschooling? I'm especially interested in books that have been helpful to others who brought children home from brick-and-mortar schools and especially targeted for those homeschooling high schoolers for the first time.
  6. First of all I want to personally thank SWB and JW for taking the time to write WTM. I had already been homeschooling for several years when I read it. My oldest two did not really reap the benefits from the shift in my homeschooling paradigm, but the oldest of my younger four is now a high school senior. She was in the grammar stage when I began making changes in the tone and intensity of my educational plan. We were never able to implement everything that I wanted to. Latin fell away because I was overwhelmed. We never really made it very far in logic. WTM made the gaps in my education even more obvious than they already were. But I did not let this discourage me and I soldiered on and we did the best we could do to live out the ideals in WTM. These forums, esp the high school board and the curriculum board, were a huge help to me; a very real and tangible support in keeping the rigor and keeping it real. This afternoon Sarah received a personal phone call from the director of the honors program at the college she has chosen. She was accepted into the University Scholars program, an elite group that only accepts 15 freshmen per year. We know from the competition weekend that she was on the low end of competitors as far as ACT and GPA, just a little higher than what it took to be invited to compete. It was her ability to hold her own in group discussions on diverse topics, to stand up to the interview process, to keep it together during the timed essays. The competitors were watched every minute of the competition weekend to see if they would be a good fit for the program. I knew she would be a good fit and now her chosen college has seen her for what she is; a bright, well read, well rounded, thoughtful young woman who knows who she is, what she stands for and how to defend that stance. Thank you Susan. Thank you Jessie. The time you invested in pouring yourselves out into the pages of WTM is a large part of the reason that we are where we are today. Thank you for the roadmap.
