  1. I agree with those who said that the lyme disease diagnosis can be tricky. You have to have it for a while for it to show up in a blood test. My neighbor was told she did NOT have it this spring but a couple of weeks later when she was not feeling better another blood test proved it was positive after all. We live in an area with a lot of tics and last summer I had a painful red, swollen area on my upper thigh which did not look like a bull's eye but it happened a couple of days after sitting outside watching the kids swim. When I went to the doctor she told me she didn't think it was lyme disease and was trying to call it a hair follicle infection. She left the room and was gone for a long time and then came back and told me she was treating me for lyme disease???!!! I caught the bite early on and it was too early to develop the typical bullseye rash (that takes at least a week). And it did have that black spot in the middle...I took one course of the doxy and now wonder if that was enough. I still get really achy, tired, etc. I would push for another test or find another doctor. I also agree that the doctors questions are getting too intrusive. And once they are older I don't like when they ask me to leave the room....my kids want me there. Go with your gut...mom knows best!
  2. Awwww...we had one for almost ten years and she died this spring. She was the sweetest dog ever and we really miss her a lot! Enjoy your new dog!
  3. I totally understand!!!That is fantastic! Congrats on seeing some wonderful results with your dd!
  4. After trying many flours over the past 5 years, my favorite is now this one: http://www.julesglutenfree.com/ I don't use a lot of flour and have had this bag since Christmas time. She has lots of recipes on her site, demos on youtube, free shipping several times a year. I mostly just substitute it for regular flour in recipes as I don't do much baking anymore. She just came out with a cookie mix that we tried and it is great.
  5. From what I have heard (and I really wish I could find the source right now) the blood tests are not terribly accurate. A very high percentage come back negative. Mine did but I chose to go gluten free anyway. When I checked back with my gastro MD, he told me to call it "gluten sensitive" and not bother going back on to have further testing (I react badly to any gluten) and also said it may be better for insurance reasons not to have it labeled celiac. They could consider it a higher risk condition and it may affect rates. And the weight thing is misunderstood as well....I have never been thin. Good luck.
  6. If your child is taking these in capsule form, do you give them 3 a day? I am assuming the capsules are for children as well as adults. My child is 11, about 95 lbs. Thanks!
  7. I wouldn't feel badly about food not being left over. I wouldn't want to eat it after a lot of people have picked in it, especially those adults and children who do not wash their hands. Actually the last few potlucks I went to, I didn't think that making a dessert is the same cost wise as a main dish and I always seemed to get the main dish to bring. You can make a dessert for a lot less than a main dish. It just doesn't equal out when the same people have to keep bringing the same type of dish.
  8. I would second the NTI device after wearing a mouth splint for several years and continuing to grind right through it. You got a lot of great advice but I would add, as tough as it sounds, try to get off the caffeine (Dr. Pepper addict). It can make your muscles more tense and cause additional pain. Good Luck!
  9. If you google "sensory diet examples" you can take a look at what this looks like for different children with different needs. Keep in mind all are different. You have to look at the behavior and plan an activity to best help the child cope with or alleviate the problem behavior or sensory need. My dd has a sensory diet but now that we are not doing school in the summer I need to modify it a bit. If I have time later I can try to list some of it here. She has been in OT for quite a while and her therapist is trying to help redesign it before she takes a therapy break at the end of the summer. You can also find examples online which list different activities for different areas of SID. I will try to find the one I found which I thought was most helpful.
  10. At just after 8:30PM here in MN, it is 86 F, down from a high of 91 F. Hot and windy here today.....YES, it does get pretty warm here in MN in spite of our reputation for cold! :001_smile:
  11. I didn't read all of the links but I remember many years ago when I was pregnant with my first we had a rep come to our home and give us the sales pitch. It was $1000 back then and they had some type of deal where if you bought it then and right there, you could get it a little cheaper. Dh said no way, he was in sales and his products weren't sold that way and he thought it sounded strange. Besides, we needed things for a baby. MIL bought one and she eventually gave us her rainbow which I thought was a pain to use, too many pieces, etc. She eventually came back one day though and took it out of our closet while we weren't home....not sure where it is now! When I want to vacuum, which is often, I want something that is quick and easy to get out and use. HTH!
  12. I am so sorry you had to go through that! My dd was once held down by four nurses to get a blood sample.....not fun! I think she was only 6 at the time. I agree with the others. You need to write up your own version of an "incident report" in addition to a letter stating how to deal with your dd in the future. :grouphug:
  13. So very sorry for your loss. We had to put down one of ours 2 months ago and I cannot believe how much we all cried. We have had other dogs die but they all died kind of suddenly and for some reason it was even harder for us when we had the chance to say goodbye. As the others said , grieve your loss. The pain does lessen with time. Pepper was an adorable dog!
  14. It may well be a fine program. My only problem is that we went to the clinic owned by the author of this program (mentioned in OP) and spent thousands of dollars. We did not find that they stood behind the results of the VT (or even printed out the reports on any kind of identifying stationery). I am not so sure I would have a lot of confidence in them. Just our experience...
  15. In general I am very open, but my kids have learning differences and tend to be behind other kids their age. Sometimes others judge because of that or get a real superior attitude as to how advanced their kids are. There is that expectation out there that all homeschoolers are so advanced and taking college classed in high school, etc. Not some of my kids...this has been difficult at times for both my kids and myself.
  16. Not trying to hijack but I asked our speech therapist about this test and she said they don't have it or use it (yet). She said it is quite expensive and they use other tests instead. Clinic is 3 years old and I have been satisfied overall. Should I be concerned? She just tested ds using OWLS and one from LinguiSystem. Thanks!
  17. I would suggest that if a vendor you are interested in has a talk/workshop, go and listen. Of course I realize they want to sell you their product, but often having it explained is a real help to me and can aide me in deciding whether I really want to use it or not.
  18. We lived on a 3 acre property for 15 years with 4 children and we never had a problem. We also had neighbors with 4 children who still live there with no incidents. It was about 30 feet across and 4-5 ft. deep. I miss the canoe rides we used to take. We did have rules and the kids followed them. We ended up moving due to the busy road we lived on and after losing a dog on it we were concerned a child could be next. We now have several ponds and woods and so far, so good!!
  19. I also agree with the hormone responses. You sound just like me a few years ago! I recommend bioidentical hormones, eating better (less sugar, caffeine, processed foods, try omega 3's). I have used 5-HTP and it works for me. It will get better! Good luck!
