  1. Gina, I am not the original poster on this thread but I would like to know which online course/seminar you took. I am looking at one now and would like to know if others are out there. Thanks! Marie
  2. Your description of your son as a little professor made me think of this article about Nonverbal Learning Disorder, which has some traits in common with aspergers. http://www.jewishpress.com/pageroute.do/38968
  3. I have been exploring the same thing here. I have decided to go with the Sonday System. http://winsorlearning.com/ It costs $390.00 but it is 10% off until July 1. I also cannot afford the training that will be in my town in a couple of weeks but I am taking a local workshop later this summer and they have recommended this in the past. They do have a couple of videos on their site and it looks like something I can work with pretty easily. I am also thinking of the online class from EPS. I would eventually like to take more training but now just isn't a good time for me.
  4. I haven't read it as I just ordered it: http://www.amazon.com/Asperger-Syndrome-Practical-Teachers-Materials/dp/1853464996/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_3 This was recommended by Kathryn Stewart, PH.D., who wrote "Helping a Child with Nonverbal Learning Disorder or Asperger's Disorder". She founded a school for kids with NLD and asperger's. I think it contains many teaching considerations for these children but perhaps not naming particular curriculum. I have a son with both ADHD and NLD so I am always searching for something that will work with him.
  5. Thanks so much, Heidi. I was thinking it was an actual curriculum so your answer clarified that much better for me. The workbooks from EPS look like they would be just what we need also. I have been looking for something like that for a while. I appreciate your help!
  6. It is a math program from Lindamood-Bell and "integrates concept imagery and numeral imagery with language and applies that processing to math computation and problem solving". I am looking for something to help my ds who has NVLD and is really struggling with math. It was mentioned to me today by his SLP as a possible source for him (she hasn't used it but suggested looking into it). He has major difficulty with word problems, concepts, visualizing, math language, etc. We have used Saxon and Math-U- See . difficult to implement? We cannot afford the tutoring with Lindamood-Bell at this time. Thanks! Marie
  7. It reminds me of my ds who has nonverbal learning disorder (NLD) and just doesn't get the nonverbal communication at times. He is getting better but I remember when he would be fooling around in church or some other place and I would give him the "LOOK" and he would just wave back and continue on with his misbehavior. He has to have things directly pointed out to him before he is aware of how it affects others. He also has visual processing delays and sometimes he just doesn't see things that others notice. (finding things in a room, drawer, etc.) I think it takes lots of reminders and practice to overcome some of these situations like being on the phone, etc.
  8. I try to keep reviewing concepts as needed with flash cards and other ways to practice skills. I did back up with ds with phonics and he seems to be "getting it" better this time, but we will see if it sticks. I am trying to add in some games to make review a little more fun. I would probably review key concepts rather than go back and repeat a whole year of math. I think they just need to remember it rather than relearn it. I plan to have both of them keep practicing skills during the summer this year as that is just too long of a break for them.
  9. I am not sure about autism, but our dd's neuropsych said it is common with ADHD. I have two children with that diagnosis and it happens sometimes with both of them.
  10. I am pretty sure there has been discussion on the yahoo group about using the I See Sam readers as a supplement to ABCD (maybe something in the files section of the yahoo group?). I do have those also but I am mostly using short Level A right now as I have an easier time following those lessons and making them work for my dd. That is just my opinion :001_smile: but they can be used together.
  11. I have done the IOWA with mine but I wouldn't recommend it. Ds was really overwhelmed with it. I am also looking for something different and I am eager to see what might work better. I know the ps was not in favor of it. I am also wondering how important it is to find one and stick to it to have some sort of consistency. Good question! Marie
  12. I have adopted children with SPD, which led me to read a lot on the subject. That brought to my attention the fact that my teenage son had a LOT of SPD symptoms which I had thought were just behavior issues. He did receive OT services for almost a year and his OT said I was "right on" with his diagnosis. After following his progress, I think that I, too, have some of the same issues, although milder and I have never been evaluated. It just took me a while to realize it and I think I have done OK over the years to deal with it. It would have been great, though, to have had someone realize it, because some of these symptoms made me (and ds also) feel like there was something quite odd about ourselves. He was so relieved to know what it actually was and that he was not crazy! Kind of scary as a teen!
  13. . Good luck to you! http://www.ncld.org/...ask=view&id=470
  14. I am a 16 also and only 5'3" tall and the ones at Kohl's Women's sizes (and others) were too long and baggy in the thighs. I walked into my local Lane Bryant and they were the most helpful gals I have met in ages. They had this special tape measure, not in inches but their own sizes and quickly fit me with the correct size and length. I couldn't believe how good the jeans felt. I bought one pair and they ordered the other which was out of stock and shipped it to my home (free shipping) in less than a week. Go on their website as it explains it better than I can. I also ordered dress pants now that I know my size and they fit great. I am sold! I previously had a thing about going there but they were just fantastic especially as far as customer service goes.
  15. I was interested in this program especially for ds 9 who has the working memory deficits, slow processing speed, lots of visual processing deficits, etc. Is this considered remedial or just where does it fit in? I guess I mean where in the therapy hierarchy does it fit in and when is the best time to use it? He is doing a home VT program where he is making good progress but the dr. says he will be at it for a while (NVLD, ADHD) longer. She mentioned several things at the last appt and I think she might have mentioned Brainware?? Does that sound right? Thanks! I am so glad it is still on sale!
  16. The neuropsych recommended this book: http://www.amazon.co...28332175&sr=8-1
  17. Thanks for the ideas. Katherine, you mentioned dyslexia, or at least the book, which I have but need to look at again. That was never brought up in all of the testing we had with the NP last winter. How do I know if that is the problem or part of it? You also mentioned working on phonics for an hour a day......not with this child! She has ADHD (sometimes I wonder if it is just her sensory issues and not really ADHD) and is really immature for a 7 year old.(However she did sit nicely and listen to a nature class with the naturalist yesterday for a long time.) I don't think she can do that and I am not sure I could either (with her anyhow!) Thanks!
  18. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I am looking over all the links and and trying to decide what would work best with her. I appreciate your time !
  19. Thanks for the responses and ideas. I don't know if I would go back to this doctor again. We had had our dd there at the same large university earlier this year and had a totally different (great!) experience with another neuropsych. I had requested her but they said she was no longer taking new patients and was focusing only on kids with cancer. Maybe it will all be more clear when we get the written report. I think we will go ahead with the AP testing as the more I have read online, nonverbal communication is greatly affected with NVLD and I am sure they can offer him some help in that area. Anita, I "researched" CM all summer and was trying to incorporate some of it but I am still having trouble making it work for him and his sister. I really believe it is great but for me, implementing it is the tricky part! Thanks again! Marie
  20. I have heard that too much B vitamin can interfere with sleep. It should be taken earlier in the day. Also, I know for myself, I take my magnesium and calcium before bed as it is helpful in relaxing and going to sleep. HTH!
