  1. Hi all! I have been a member of this board for a while and even posted once or twice, but I have never introduced myself lol. I understand most of the acronyms used here but please forgive me if I am not exactly fluent. I guess once I post more and more, I will grow more accustomed to using the acronyms in my own posts. I am a proud mama and here's a little about our family: My daughter is 8 and loves technology, music, dolls, and stories. She is a severe dyslexic and has been held back a year in school prior to being diagnosed. She had an outside OG tutor who taught her to read and write. Her school uses Wilson fundations but the staff knows NOTHING about dyslexia. This is her second school and I am looking to homeschool her because her little spirit has been crushed by the whole schooling experience. She gets speech in school for articulation. My son is 6 and loves art, photography, baseball, and cracking jokes. He appears to have dyslexia and ADHD but is only in kindergarten, so I can't say for sure. He was having an even tougher time in school and was going to have to repeat kindergarten because of his behavior and reading trouble, but I objected. We are working on getting him diagnosed but I am also looking for another school for him. Or I may homeschool him as well if I can find the right fit for him. He also has some articulation issues and will start speech therapy outside the school this summer. I teach adult ESL and have a lot of Orton-Gillingham training. We live in a billingual - English & Spanish - household but the kids only read & write in English.
  2. I guess I'm wondering what would be so bad about memorizing a list of 100 words? Wouldn't it help us a get a head start in this whole learning to read process? It actually sounds a lot like the grammar stage in classical education (memorizing information that we might not understand now that will make learning easier in the future? pegs to hang information on?). So, maybe they wouldn't understand why the word sign is pronounced like that, but they might recognize the pattern when they see it in other words like "align" and be able to read it. I guess I'm questioning the whole phonics thing after seeing how quickly and easily my nephews are reading in kindergarten in the ps. Phonics almost seems too slow and laborious, and (shock!) maybe not all that necessary?! I'm getting a little frustrated teaching my child that a cve syllable makes a long vowel sound only to come across words like "gone, love, and come"! I've also been teaching him that 2 vowels together means the first one is long and the second is silent, and then we run into words like bread and field. He looks at me like I don't know what I'm talking about! There are so many exceptions to the rules we teach! I know, I know.... there is value in knowing the phonics rules, but isn't there some value in memorizing a lot of words as well?
  3. Would AAS work as a phonics program also? I am looking for something to do with my ds after itchys alphabet in K and I am looking at AAS and Phonics Pathways. I know they are both widely used on here, so what do you think? Would AAS work? or should I continue looking into Phonics Pathway? Is Phonics Pathway multisensory?
  4. Can you tell me which one you chose, why you chose it, do you like it and where you would start with my youngest. She's finishing up Veritas Press' Phonics Museum and has a very good handle on phonetic sounds. She spells quite well too. She still needs work on dge, gh, and occasionally when to use tion vs sion. The basic rules are good. It's just the more complex ones, although she can read them well. So tell me what you love and where I should put her. Thanks Heather
  5. What is the best book/website/training DVD that explains the method? I want to understand the method fully so that I can implement it, but I am not really interested in any specific program. I've looked at so many, they all cost a lot, and they are very inflexible. We are using Explode the Code with some success with my 6yo and 8yo. All About Spelling seems to be working with my 11yo and just knowing the phonograms is helping his reading. I just want to know how to use the method so I can do it without paying $$$$ for programs. I do have the money for the first module of Barton, but I would need to be doing 3 different modules at a time! Besides, my 2 younger ones can't pass the student screening, so they need LiPS, but it is another $400. I am looking at Wilson, but there aren't really any samples on their website. I hate to buy something that I can't see before I spend a chunk of money on it. I can't figure out which books I would need for each child. I think I could adapt other materials that I already have to the O-G method if I knew how to do it. I might take the 10-hour training offered by EPS, but the 30 hour training is $995 (in Orlando in November.) Preventing Academic Failure looks really good for me, but it is also expensive. Just not sure what to do!
