  1. I also think it could be an age thing. One reason you may not be getting more answers is that most six year olds aren't reading chapter books with little print. Reading large type and begging readers with few sentences is easier. My oldest had to use a card or her finger to read for several years. At six she loved the larger print chapter books. A Pippi Longstocking version illustrated by Lauren Child was her favorite! Oldest reads well without a card now. I feel Her attention issues affected her reading of small print books.
  2. The Invention of Hugo Cabret (she is captivated, all three listen in complete silence in the car) The Green Ember ( liking it) The one and only Ivan (likes it) We just finished Mr. Poppers Penguins. All three kids liked it. Peter Pan read by Jim Dale is amazing. One of my all time favorite audiobooks.
  3. I just found the podcast by accident this weekend! My girls had a sleepover with the grandparents and I spent the morning cleaning and binge listening. It was lovely!
  4. Sounds like an eating disorder. I would contact her doctor. I have had problems with anorexia, bulimia, and binging so I may be seeing something that isn't there. The picky eating and not eating outside the house is a flag though. Also the excessive exercising. Feeling weak/dizzy and still refusing food as well. What will she eat? Can you have her keep a very detailed food journal with your help? This helped me to realize how little I was actually eating.
  5. Why is BFSU not getting done and how would that change with these new curriculums? Because now you would be doing 3 times the work. That seems more difficult. I combine all my girls for science. I suppose if you loved this idea and it excited/energized you and you just couldn't wait to start. Then it would be a good plan. Personally it sounds like a lot of work for not enough gain.
  6. Looking for options for grammar in a co-op setting. It would be for 3rd graders and maybe some 4/5 not yet ready for IEW. Any ideas? The teacher would want a curriculum so no winging it!
  7. You could use MM with no maniplatives. They use pictures for thr manipulatives. . You could have him say the answers verbally or scribe for him. We do use c-rods, abucus, and a 100s chart because I think manipulatives are great but for my oldest I wrote for most of her first year.
  8. After doing 100EZL all my girls started OpGTR after the letter sounds. One kid flew through the book 4 lessons at a time. The others did more typical lessons.
  9. I picked one up for the first time last week! Can't remember seeing them before. It was good.
  10. my kids eat fruit first. Then I make smoothies and two eat Nutella on some kind of bread. Oldest eats a cliff bar. Once in awhile I make pancakes for the two Nutella eaters.
  11. I do not give grades. We do take tests and they know when they have gotten answers wrong. Once in a while a child will be very please with their work and ask for an A+. They got this from books or tv. I proudly write an A+ and give the kid a kiss.
  12. Hi! For the SOTW class we separated the kids into two groups 1st/2nd and 3rd-5th. Then I went through the book and had to combine some of the chapters because it is 4 weeks longer than our co-op. Each week I let everyone know what chapter we are on. They are supposed to do the reading at home. In class I give a brief overview of the chapter and sometimes show a video or play a related game/contest. Then I use the activity guide to do a craft. It's been lots of fun!
  13. MM and Dreambox. One kid is doing Beast too. Others weren't/won't be Beast ready for second grade. . I like them all!
  14. Any one have good ideas for science curriculums you could use within a co-op for 1st-5th graders? I teach a SOTW class that is going really well. Something similar for science would be ideal. Read a book at home and do projects at co-op. Any ideas?
  15. We do about an hour but it is broken up by different curriculum and set I between other subjects. My 9 year old does 2 pages in Beast then some reading and copy work. Next a couple lessons on Dreambox and piano practice. Finishing with some MM.
  16. The leapfrog reader is the pen that reads books, right? If so my kids loved it and we went through 2 of them. The girls didn't use it as practice they used it prior to learning to read. We didn't have any iPads at the time so this was pretty fun for them! They loved being able to listen to books independently. It even had a headphone jack so they could listen to their own in the car. Great for trips. It was used mostly during the toddler/preschooler age.
  17. I would definitely not have her wear the white dress. It's practically the main rule of attending weddings. Don't wear white unless asked.
  18. It is mentioned briefly on the BrainPOP Jr episode about him. Specifically that it was not his whole ear. It doesn't bother me at any age.
  19. I would get a whole bunch of the Dooney & Bourke Disney purses. I have a less expensive Disney purse and wallet that I purchased on my last two visits. I'd love the up grade!
  20. My oldest has major attention issues. She needs me to do her math with her. It helps if she verbally talks through all her work aloud. It helps her stay on track and it helps me recognize when she isn't paying attention. She also needed a lot more review than her sisters to master her facts. This has come via apps and 1$ store books. At 7 she would not have been able to sit at the table and complete a row of problems without me. I would have to say things like "now what?" "Let's do the next one." "What comes next?" "Moving on." Thankful she is getting better at this and her sisters are fully capable of doing a page by themselves.
  21. I am hating the Apologia Anatomy. My girls do it in a co-op setting. We have the audio book and the workbook. I think it is the worst combination of busywork and boring. I will admit that my advanced dd who is 7 likes it. She has a great memory and enjoys the audio. Her sisters are in 1st and 3rd and they greatly dislike it. I think it is way pricey for what you get. The health chapter is based on the food pyramid which I disagree with. I dislike the awkward ways they interject God into the subjects.
  22. My oldest went from Roald Dahl to the How To Train Your Dragon series. She is now into Neil Gaiman.
  23. Thank you so much! I'm going to go out for a frog tomorrow. We've kept aquatic frogs before. Would those be okay? I don't see any pictures/video of people using that type for scenting but I already have an appropriate aquarium I can add them to. I had dd stop handling him last Friday thinking he may be stressed.
  24. Sigh, dd7's pet snake will not eat. It has been with us 2 weeks. He is an albino western hognose hatchling. I thought the place we got him from said he was eating frozen pinkies but he has yet to eat here. They have not returned my message yet. He is active and handles well. She tried scenting the pinkie with canned tuna. I have "brained" the mouse. She tried putting him in a smaller container to eat. Dying pets don't make for an awesome Christmas! Any ideas?
