  1. We did all the available lessons during the demo we had the past two months. My kids loved it. They loved Doug and the videos. They loved that all the projects worked and thought them all interesting. At the library they repeatedly checked out books on some of the covered topics. Each has brought up something they learned in conversation after the fact. I think it's pretty great!
  2. Nothing. I'm like those crazy kids always telling people "I don't go to school" Bam! Mic drip...
  3. For sure FLL2. I think that doing a little of WWE1 is a good idea but once she gets it I'd move on to WWE2.
  4. I teach sotw at a co-op. The readings are supposed to be done at home. That happens with maybe half the kids.I try to switch it up a lot with how I present the information. I use videos/clips from YouTube and BrainPOP. Or sometimes I talk and show slides or read a great picture book. Then we have a project. This could be some sort of game or project. Mostly it is craft or art related. I have used the activity guide but I also check Pinterest/Google for lesson ideas.
  5. I'm reading The Hobbit to them. My husband is reading The Onnivore's Dilemma. We are listening to The Goblet of Fire (Harry and Cedric were reaching for the trophy when I had to turn it off today 😭)
  6. I have told so many people about this forum but I have yet to recognize anyone. My signature gives away who I am fairly obviously if you already know me. Anyone out there??? Lol
  7. I think the big deal would be how exactly she is engineering the one on one time. I can think of plenty of nice and mean ways I have seen children do that over the years. So I don't think the one on one playing is wrong but how she goes about it could be a problem.
  8. Every time I hear about parents charging rent it is because the parents need the money, want the child to move out, or want to control the kid in someway. I had to pay rent because I had a nervous breakdown at a big ten school and had to move home and go to a regular university. The paying rent and paying for my own college (I didn't have to pay at the better school) were a punishment for not continuing with the approved future choices and "being a baby" lol. My brother had to pay rent when he moved back home at 22 for the summer because my dad did not want him staying too long. A friend had to split rent with her mother and sister at a young age due to financial trouble.
  9. Do you like music with lyrics? That is the most commonly over looked yet most modern and accessible form of poetry. You could start with your favorite songs.
  10. Since I wasn't there I can't tell you when your phone got wet, but I certainly wouldn't call the restaurant about it! I'd be happy there's a warranty.
  11. Cross country is a great team sport! Lots of time to talk while running. Coaches usually make you stick to groups during practice forcing interacting. My experience has been that the boys are usually more inclusive of others than different sports.
  12. It seems like grandma actually likes them a tiny bit. I mean she is willing to display the stuff. Maybe the kids thought she actually hated flamingos with a burning passion. I hate knickknacks or little figures. If the joke was get Reign lots of precious moments figures it might be funny but those things would be in the garbage after opening! Not kept and used. I'd think the ornament thing was hilarious but I wouldn't want to actually see after finding it or store it. So maybe it depends on the level of hate.
  13. Sum swamp and addition war. We also do dream box but prodigy is free and lots of kids like it.
  14. I would not want my child turning 15 in 8th grade if it could be helped. Especially if she didn't want too!!!
  15. We are part of a regular co-op but I do teach a SOTW class there. Parents read the text with the kids during the week and then in class I do some supplementing with a video, game, or picture book and a craft/art project. They also have IEW as a class option.
  16. Normal! My youngest was able to blend to sound out words at the youngest age for my girls. She was a newish 2 year old and sounding out cvc words. She is now 6 and just recently began reading fairly fluently at a 3rd grade level. So she was blending and reading choppy for years. My older two started reading at 3/4 years and became fluent much faster.
  17. My solution is having my kids help. I'm lucky because my youngest has wanted to be a chef/baker since she was 3. She is very good at chopping vegetables, she gets them looking more uniform than I do. Since we only cook vegetarian this is a big help! Her sisters help out as well if needed. Besides the chopping most of our food is very easy and quick. Sauces are made ahead of time and kept frozen in baggies.
  18. Hmmm. I really like Center For Lit's idea of discussing a picture book prior to chapter books at even the middle/high school level. It can be fun, educational, and get kids into the swing of things. Or even reading a comic/picture book version of Shakespeare before cracking open The Tempest. For those reasons I'd say it probably depends on why this book was assigned. Truthfully I am having a hard time thinking of what that reason could be. I don't personally like the book.
  19. Beast is by far the most expensive program we use. I think it is totally worth it. We also do MM as a supplement.
  20. I just bought some of the ice cream today! I am so excited because I haven't tried that flavor yet. I picked up the fudge brownie for DH. So glad they went with almond milk!!!
