Disability/Welfare in WA state. HELP!
Scarymelon replied to Alenee's topic in General Education Discussion Board
She needs to go to DSHS and tell them that she needs to go on GAU/Disability Lifeline. They will help her find a primary care dr. to treat her for the disabling problem. This also provides some living expenses. If the problem is longer term and she is not able to work, she should start the process of applying for social security disability; she will likely need a lawyer for this and plan on it taking 2 years or so to go through. -
What kind of doctor.......

Start with primary care; unless you have amazing insurance in our area it is a three month wait to get into derm. -
Quick, Inexpensive Visit Options for Vancouver BC
Scarymelon replied to joannqn's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Awhile ago we stayed at the YWCA in Vancouver. Our family was smaller than, but it wasn't expensive. Bring your bikes and go to Stanley Park. Granville Island is a great place to just go and walk around. I believe that the little boats that go there from downtown are free. -
I have some questions for those that are going through a divorce; my best friend has just been completely blindsided by her husband. They grew up together in a conservative christian community and after 15 years of marriage, he announced last week that he was done with everything. He has been having an affair, and he says he is done with their marriage and being in the church. He doesn't even want to discuss counseling. The are financially well off and I have no idea what she is going to do; all she has ever wanted was to be a SAHM (their kids are 11,9, and 6). Our families are very close; we eat together at least once a week and usually vacation once or twice a year together. I knew they were going through a rough patch, but don't the best way to help her through this (Or him..I am very mad at him, but I know he needs help as well)

I would get a test for strep and checked for a peritonsilar abscess.

Runners--Can you help me with a schedule?
Scarymelon replied to snickelfritz's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I would say 3 is the minimum number of days to run and build distance. -
Someone should start a WTM couch surfing forum. We don't have a ton of room, but we live in Washington state and I think it would be fun to host another homeschooling family for a few nights in our tent trailer. At the very least it would be cheap! We do a lot of road trips, but are very careful when we stay with anyone that they are up to a family of 6 staying the night. We live nicely situated between Mt. Rainier and Olympic National Parks.

I ran my first half marathon yesterday!

Congratulations! I have just started my serious training runs for one in June. I love hearing about other people's success because I am really worried. -
Morning Exercise: What To Eat Before?
Scarymelon replied to Hunter's Moon's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I don't eat anything before my morning run. If I stop and eat breakfast and drink coffee, I know I won't get myself out the door. -
What does the "breadwinner" in your house do?
Scarymelon replied to susankenny's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I am a family nurse practitioner; I have a job at a rural health clinic and another as an associate medical director at a nursing home. We live off my salaries, although my husband does work some as a contractor and supported us when I was in school. -
Anyone ever do a triathlon?
Scarymelon replied to arstephia's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Yes! I have done three now. Two very low key sprint triathalons that I loved and one Olympic distance that was an Olympic qualifier that made me feel very bad about myself. I really hope to some day work up to half iron distance, when I have 20 or so hours a week to spare. It sounds like you are pretty well prepared for the race. I am in my mid 30's, on the high end of normal for my BMI, and am very slow and ploddy. Feel free to PM if you want to trade encouragement anytime soon! -
My husband is quite a film buff, and we have been going through this list. Some of the movies should definitely be pre-screened by adults first, but we haven't been disappointed by a movie on it yet. The British Film Institute provides only an alphabetical listing of the top ten recommended movies.[1] They are: Bicycle Thieves (1948) E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) Kes (1969) The Night of the Hunter (1955) The 400 Blows (1959) Show Me Love (1998) Spirited Away (2001) Toy Story (1995) Where is the Friend's Home? (1987) The Wizard of Oz (1939) [edit]The following 40 in alphabetical order A Day at the Races (1937) The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) Au revoir les enfants (1987) Back to the Future (1985) Beauty and the Beast (1946) Beauty and the Beast (1991) Billy Elliot (2000) Edward Scissorhands (1990) Finding Nemo (2003) It's a Wonderful Life (1946) Jason and the Argonauts (1963) The Kid (1921) King Kong (1933) Kirikou and the Sorceress (1998) Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (1953) My Life as a Dog (1985) My Neighbor Totoro (1988) Oliver Twist (1948) The Outsiders (1983) Pather Panchali (1955) Play Time (1967) The Princess Bride (1987) Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) The Railway Children (1970) The Red Balloon (1956) Romeo + Juliet (1996) The Secret Garden (1993) Singin' in the Rain (1952) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) Some Like It Hot (1959) The Spirit of the Beehive (1973) Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) To Be and to Have (2002) To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) A Trip to the Moon (1902) Walkabout (1971) Whale Rider (2002) Whistle Down the Wind (1961) The White Balloon (1995)

A Salad Thread, Please
Scarymelon replied to kalanamak's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Radish and Pecan Grain Salad; THis has become a lunch staple and I can substitute almost quite a bit and it is still good. Serves 6 to 8 as a side 2 cups mixed grains (like farro, freekah, wheat berries, wild rice, and quinoa, pearl barley, or any combination of the above) 1 cup baby arugula leaves 1 cup parsley leaves, minced 1/2 cup tarragon leaves, minced 1/2 cup mint leaves, cut in a chiffonade 1/2 pound pecans 1/4 cup walnut oil 1/4 cup sherry vinegar 1 cup lime, watermelon, or French breakfast radishes, cut into thin slices, preferably using a mandoline 1/4 cup shallot, minced 1/4 cup olive oil 1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup dried cranberries Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a boil. Add the grains and cook until just tender, about 25 minutes. (With grains like wild rice and wheat berries, add them to the pot first and cook 10 minutes before adding remaining grains). Drain the grains into a colander, then set aside until warm to the touch. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and toss well. Season with salt to taste. -
I finally finished A Dance With Dragons
Scarymelon replied to Mommy22alyns's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I think the series has given me PTSD. I was actually emotionally traumatized by the people they killed off..I hope to recover by the time the next book is out. Such a great series though, but I just want Ned Stark to stay at Winterfell. -
I would definitely stay in North Hampton or Amherst. I went to college in the Valley and those would definitely be the nicest places to visit.

The Well Educated Mind
Scarymelon replied to craftymama's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I am working my way through the list and am trying to do the journaling. I just love book lists. I am about 80% done with Moby Dick. I can't say I like, but it is not as painful as Don Quixote or Ulysses to get through. And the chapters are short, which is nice. -
Anyone else do church at home?
Scarymelon replied to SewingMom2many's topic in General Education Discussion Board
About ten years ago we were very active in a home church; there were about 10 families and we lived in a suburban neighborhood together. We met on Saturdays around dinner, singing, etc. We were part of a very loose affiliation of fifteen or so homechurches around the country. It was really great while it lasted, but it didn't end very well. We last about eight years, and then two people had an affair, and the man that had been somewhat of an informal leader of our network and inspired us sort of went off the deep end. We fell apart around that point. It was a very real experience for me in a way the mainstream evangelical church I grew up in was not. We have not found a church we want to join since then. -
Seasoned travellers - what should I pack?
Scarymelon replied to Hannah's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have given this a lot of thought since last night. Given Ireland has weather pretty close to the PNW; 1 jeans, 2 other pairs pants 1 medium length skirt Riding type boots (wear these on the plane, not pack, to be worn with skirt or pants for dressy) 5 knit longs sleeve and short sleeve shirts 1 medium to heavy weight cardigan 1 water proof jacket 1 sturdy tennis shoes/walking shoes a few extra t-shirts and yoga pants for p.j.s I find that clothes are not my packing problem, but books and toiletries start to add up. My kindle has solved some of the problem, but I try and buy shampoo, etc. when I get there. Saves a lot of time in security as well. -
I just watched Last of the Mohicans with my 11 year old daughter. I had forgotten how much I really loved that movie. She said it was fine. Sigh.

Quick, please ~ question re Ibuprofren dosage...
Scarymelon replied to Colleen's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I find that 600 mg is just as effective as 800. I think every 6 hours for a few days is usually the best bet. -
I don't have the links in front of me, but I know that there are a number of farm/hotels in the Northern California/Southern Oregon area. This is a great place to visit in May. I believe I have seen an article on these kinds of hotels in Arthur Frommer's Budget travel; they have a good online site as well.

Portland for grown ups!
Scarymelon replied to happygrrl's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Pied Cow Coffeehouse for late night desserts and hookah smoking. A very weird combo, but a lot of fun. Eating poutine at 2 am from the food carts on Hawthorne (and 10th, I believe) (much better while mildly inebriated, but not necessary). Brunch at Mother's Bistro.
