  1. She needs to go to DSHS and tell them that she needs to go on GAU/Disability Lifeline. They will help her find a primary care dr. to treat her for the disabling problem. This also provides some living expenses. If the problem is longer term and she is not able to work, she should start the process of applying for social security disability; she will likely need a lawyer for this and plan on it taking 2 years or so to go through.
  2. Start with primary care; unless you have amazing insurance in our area it is a three month wait to get into derm.
  3. Awhile ago we stayed at the YWCA in Vancouver. Our family was smaller than, but it wasn't expensive. Bring your bikes and go to Stanley Park. Granville Island is a great place to just go and walk around. I believe that the little boats that go there from downtown are free.
  4. I have some questions for those that are going through a divorce; my best friend has just been completely blindsided by her husband. They grew up together in a conservative christian community and after 15 years of marriage, he announced last week that he was done with everything. He has been having an affair, and he says he is done with their marriage and being in the church. He doesn't even want to discuss counseling. The are financially well off and I have no idea what she is going to do; all she has ever wanted was to be a SAHM (their kids are 11,9, and 6). Our families are very close; we eat together at least once a week and usually vacation once or twice a year together. I knew they were going through a rough patch, but don't the best way to help her through this (Or him..I am very mad at him, but I know he needs help as well)

  7. I just finished Gilead by Marianne Robinson; it is absolutely incredible. It takes the form of a letter that a pastor is writing to his son before he dies. If you like 900 pg. science fiction, Reamde was good too.
  8. Someone should start a WTM couch surfing forum. We don't have a ton of room, but we live in Washington state and I think it would be fun to host another homeschooling family for a few nights in our tent trailer. At the very least it would be cheap! We do a lot of road trips, but are very careful when we stay with anyone that they are up to a family of 6 staying the night. We live nicely situated between Mt. Rainier and Olympic National Parks.
  9. Congratulations! I have just started my serious training runs for one in June. I love hearing about other people's success because I am really worried.
  10. I don't eat anything before my morning run. If I stop and eat breakfast and drink coffee, I know I won't get myself out the door.
  11. I am a family nurse practitioner; I have a job at a rural health clinic and another as an associate medical director at a nursing home. We live off my salaries, although my husband does work some as a contractor and supported us when I was in school.
  12. Yes! I have done three now. Two very low key sprint triathalons that I loved and one Olympic distance that was an Olympic qualifier that made me feel very bad about myself. I really hope to some day work up to half iron distance, when I have 20 or so hours a week to spare. It sounds like you are pretty well prepared for the race. I am in my mid 30's, on the high end of normal for my BMI, and am very slow and ploddy. Feel free to PM if you want to trade encouragement anytime soon!

Some of the movies should definitely be pre-screened by adults first, but we haven't been disappointed by a movie on it yet.   14. Radish and Pecan Grain Salad; THis has become a lunch staple and I can substitute almost quite a bit and it is still good. Serves 6 to 8 as a side 2 cups mixed grains (like farro, freekah, wheat berries, wild rice, and quinoa, pearl barley, or any combination of the above) 1 cup baby arugula leaves 1 cup parsley leaves, minced 1/2 cup tarragon leaves, minced 1/2 cup mint leaves, cut in a chiffonade 1/2 pound pecans 1/4 cup walnut oil 1/4 cup sherry vinegar 1 cup lime, watermelon, or French breakfast radishes, cut into thin slices, preferably using a mandoline 1/4 cup shallot, minced 1/4 cup olive oil 1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup dried cranberries Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a boil. Add the grains and cook until just tender, about 25 minutes. (With grains like wild rice and wheat berries, add them to the pot first and cook 10 minutes before adding remaining grains). Drain the grains into a colander, then set aside until warm to the touch. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and toss well. Season with salt to taste.
