  1. Well, I learned something new tonight. I have lived in Ohio my entire life and have never run into them. Looks like there are three different species here!
  2. My 16 year old is making over $1000 a month working part time at a local ice cream place. It would be easy for him to accumulate that much in his checking account. Unfortunately he was over 18 and it was completely legal for him to use his money to buy weapons (not saying that it was right). There is nothing in our system that would trigger any kind of alarm in this situation. I'm not even able to see my 18yods's bank account.
  3. Rest and routine is a big factor for my dh's aunt. Maybe your mom was tired from anticipating a big day. Plus, since it was a day where she was out of her normal routine she was not quite as sharp as at other times. Our aunt gets very confused and rattled when my kids are all around at once with the grandkids mixed in.
  4. If I was the kid's parent, I would want to know. When one of my kids was a preteen (probably 10 or 11) we had close family friends whom he was very comfortable with. One day in church, he walked by the wife and for some unaccountable reason smacked her on the butt! She immediately called him out on it in a joking way but before we left church made sure I knew. I was so thankful. We talked to him about it later and realized that in his mind, she was his friend and on a baseball team that's what they did to greet one another. We discussed that, yes, she is your friend but she is an adult and a lady and that sort of greeting wasn't appropriate. I was thankful she let me know and thankful to have the opportunity to deal with it in a pretty low key way.
  5. For my dh's aunt, we found a memory clinic. She went through about five tests and they found a severe B12 deficiency. After shots and daily supplements she is at least holding her own. The bladder infection thing has also been huge. The best advice we got was to encourage her to set up financial and medical poa! Thanks to the Hive here, that was done last summer and has made it so much easier to help her.
  6. When we moved here, our laundry water was diverted from our leech field but then we found out it was illegal to have it that way so when we had to replace the whole system they had to add the laundry water to it.
  7. We have two 1500 gal tanks because at the time it was put in we had 10 people living here. It is pumped every three years and the last time cost around $1000. As kids move out we'll be able to start stretching out the pumping. We have 7 people now and 1 more chick leaving the nest this week and I think we'll be able to wait five years the next time !
  8. We purchased a new furnace a few years ago and the duct cleaning was thrown in as part of the deal. I was amazed at the stuff that came out of them! We'll probably never do it again but our house was built in the late sixties and I'm sure it had never been done before. I will say, that my house doesn't seem to get as dusty as before but maybe that's just a perception. I don't have any proof.
  9. But are hospitalizations and deaths going up based on this wave? I'm having a hard time estimating risk. Are these mild, asymptomatic, or serious cases? Are the hospitals being overrun again or are people able to handle this variant fairly well (assuming vaccination or assuming vaccination plus one booster - or two)?
  10. We purchased a car from Carvana this winter. The trunk wouldn't open. They gave us the choice of them taking the car back for repairs or us taking it into one of their approved places. We had also noticed that the brakes were grinding during our test drive but didn't mention it at that point, figuring we would just replace them. So, we took the car into their recommended repair shop. They couldn't repair the trunk but my dh casually mentioned that the brakes were grinding. We were shocked that they called Carvana and Carvana replaced the brakes on their dime! Ended up taking the car to the Toyota dealer in town about the trunk and Carvana paid for that, too. We have nothing but praise for their customer service!
  11. A fireproof security chest. We received one for our wedding and now that's my go-to gift for most weddings because we would never have thought to ask for it. Another idea is a large cooler on wheels. We received this, too, and it was so helpful! (Our wedding was in the era before coolers had wheels but now I would get one with wheels as a gift and probably fill it up with something 🙂 Another idea I've seen on a lot of registries lately is games which I think is fun!
  12. That would be the plastic container cupboard here and I'm usually the that causes the avalanche for the next person 🤣. I hate that cupboard!
  13. I'm thankful that my husband is usually able to do the late night pickup. My ds works until 10 most nights and 11 on Saturday but this past weekend he didn't get off work until 12:40 am. Ice cream/restaurant closes at 10 but they had been so busy because of the nice weather that no clean up could start until after 10. He said it was a mess and we expect more late nights as the season turns warmer.
  14. My almost 17 yo has just gotten his first job and has been working just shy of 30 hours a week for the past month. The only reason it is working out is because it's is a less than five minute commute and we homeschool. I'm interested to see if his hours increase in the summer or stay the same.
  15. I sympathize. As an adult I've always had short hair then Covid and I thought that maybe I should wear it longer, so I did. And then about two weeks ago I went in for a trim and suddenly decided to have it short, short again and I love it. It's such a relief to have it short that I'm just going to embrace the monthly cut and deal with the cost. I feel like myself again after almost three years 🙂
  16. Regarding the second booster: My husband and I have decided to wait until we see the numbers going up. We are thinking either next week or early the week after as the numbers around us seem to be trending up again. I need to start really watching Ohio again. I know the numbers in northeastern Ohio seem to be rising and during the big omicron wave it took about two/three weeks for it to migrate to our part of the state. My dh had a moderate case in January as did at least one of the kids.
  17. I'm so sorry. Many prayers for you and your family during this time.
  18. We hired a lawyer. He prepared our offer and made sure all the paperwork was valid. It didn't cost very much at all. We had worked with our bank before so though he offered to come to closing he also didn't think it was necessary. It was a smooth process with no problems.
  19. PayPal's shipping has changed to ship station. There is a way to tie a ship station account to your PayPal account and then it seems to work the same way as the old PayPal shipping. When I had to figure it out I googled PayPal and shipping and a link came up to use.
  20. I keep getting in awkward situations with so many people here who think he is just the best thing since sliced bread . . . I keep determining to keep my mouth shut but then he comes up again in conversation and starts being praised and I find myself unable to reign it in.
  21. There was a point during the second half when UNC had been called for 8 fouls and Duke only 2 and I commented that the fix was in to make sure Coach K was in the final on Monday but about that time the refs started calling the fouls with more equity. One of my brackets had Duke winning it all so I should have been rooting for them but I always find myself rooting for the lower ranked teams.
  22. This. My youngest is 12. We have a huge oak table that was all marked up and the finish was going bad. I put off getting it redone for years. Last summer got it redone and then my grandson comes over and he loves matchbox cars and how can a grandma not let a little boy run the cars on this beautiful, shiny table. Made up my mind - again!!! The kids are more important than the things. I don't want to be the grandma that fusses over the stuff in the house!

I agree. I didn't get it today for the second time ever and both times it was the same situation. Really annoying, especially when my dh managed to get it in three 🤣
  24. As I read this, I keep thinking of your poor daughter and how traumatic this must be for her and how it could have lasting effects. She's not that far away from the age when getting a driver's license is an exciting time and to have this memory might be an awful thing for her. I don't think I would lay any blame for this on her at all - not even that she could have said "no". Maybe at a time later I would have that discussion in a different context but I'm guessing she's had enough trauma for now. I really hope this doesn't affect her when she legally begins driving. I have an 18yods who experienced no trauma at all and is still reluctant to drive because he fears making a bad decision and I can't imagine how something like this would have affected him.
