  1. Ebooks *are* real books. The author is the same. The words are the same. The story or information is the same. Most of the time, the publisher is the same. Depending on which ereader you choose, the screen looks just like a page in a book. But the ebook is lighter, gives you more space on your shelves, and allows you to bring multiple books with you on vacation. Cost is what you make it. Classics are free. Many current books, both fiction and non-fiction are free. (Both Barnes & Noble and Amazon offer free books often). You can borrow books from the library, also free. And there are no late fees, because you can't forget to return it. It just disappears from your reader when your lending period is up. That lovely scent of "real books"? Well, if you get your books used or from the library they could smell like dog, cigarette smoke, mildew, and any number of other unwelcome odors. Where did people read those books? Do you even want to know? If you buy them new then you're not really saving money. I love my ereader. I can hold my Kindle in one hand, something I can't do with a hardback book and even some paperbacks. It fits nicely in my purse. It doesn't collect dust on a shelf. And it holds a huge library of Real Books.
  2. Sorry to go off topic, but I agree. Reference books, cookbooks, and any other kind of book that I like to flip through just don't work for me on the Kindle. I love my Kindle but it has its limits.
  3. I was wishing I still had my original copy, but as I read this thread, and ds is entering the logic stage, I'm not so sure. What kind of differences are there? When I sold my old one, he was still in the grammar stage so I didn't pay much attention to the logic stage. I'm not sure I'd want WTM on my Kindle. It's the kind of book I like to browse and flip around in, and those don't work well for me on the Kindle.
  4. My ds fractured his scaphoid last year around this time. He had a splint rather than a cast, and had instructions to use his wrist as little as possible or it wouldn't heal properly. The ortho doc said it was extremely important for it to heal properly or he would likely have trouble with it all of his life. I didn't expect any writing or typing. If I really wanted his assignment written rather than oral, I had him dictate to me while I typed.
  5. :grouphug: I'm so glad something is starting to happen for Adrian. I hope it continues.
  6. I'm in the older (post menopausal) crowd and things definitely are drier on this side. However, I don't have pain as long as we use something lubricating. You might want to see a gyn to find out if there's something else causing pain.
  7. :bigear: I've been trying to set up something that's a cross between a Flylady binder and the type suggested at Organized Home. I'll be watching this thread for ideas.
  8. As long as they make an attempt at dressing up and are polite, age doesn't matter. My 14 yo went TOT last night. The oldest one in the group he was with is almost 16. Oops, forgot. We live in Central Florida.
  9. I'm thankful for the beautiful weather. A Florida winter is what makes our summers almost bearable.
  10. I voted 7, but it wasn't always that way. The family across the street has a daughter my son's age and a son a year older. Everyday, at least one of them comes over, and ds will go outside and toss a football, play basketball in the cul-de-sac, or take a bike ride. They've been there about 2 years. Before they moved in, I would have said anywhere between 2 and 4 days a week.
  11. I admit I was scratching my head at the OP's reaction too. Questioning the study isn't slamming the person who posted it. Not unless the poster is the one who conducted the study. Very well said. Thank you.
  12. My great grandparents came from the Naples area (Avellino) and settled in the NY/NJ area. Those are the pronunciations I was taught. Another one is the cheese mozzarella is pronounced motsadel.
  13. Is there anyone else who doesn't actually have holiday recipes? I make almost everything the way my mom made it, and she didn't use recipes. I make some things for dh the way his mom made them, also without recipes.
  14. Today is not a day to be proud of in terms of food. Breakfast for me was coffee. Ds grabbed some dry Cheerios. Lunch was personal pizzas at the Pizza Hut in our Target store. Ds had a dentist appointment for a teeth cleaning this morning. Guitar lessons later this afternoon. Trying to squeeze in some schooling in between. We'll be heading to a friend's tonight for a hayride style TOT. It's been raining all day. I hope it stops soon. Snow is not something we think about here either. :)
  15. I was going to post this in Dawn M's thread, but didn't want to hijack. I still haven't upgrade my iOS because of all the stories I hear about people losing things. I finally decided to give it a try Saturday night, starting with iTunes. The upgrade starts, then aborts and tells me it was unsuccessful. This happened repeatedly until I finally gave up. I tried with and without installing Cloud. Anyone had this problem? I tried googling it, but can't find a real answer.
  16. Homemade mac & cheese, broccoli, tomato salad. I'm hoping the rain stops soon (it's supposed to be over by tonight). This will probably be ds' last year TOT, so I'd hate to see him get rained out. Then again, last year he said it was probably his final year, but decided to go with some friends tonight.
  17. It's my understanding that the Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America. However, pumpkins were cheaper and more plentiful, so they started carving pumpkins instead of turnips. Of course, I read it on the internet, so...
  18. Up until last year we always left a bowl of candy and a note on a bench on the front porch. We never had any problems, and there was always candy left when we returned. Last year, ds went TOT-ing with his friends and their parents, so dh and I were at home to give out candy.
  19. Ds 14 is reading Mockingjay now. He showed no interest in them, then suddenly decided last month that he wanted to read the whole series. I would have let him read the series at 11 if he wanted to. As for me, I didn't care for The Hunger Games, and have no desire to read the other two. I'm the only person I know IRL who didn't like it.
  20. I love my 5 year old Kenmore, though I'm sure others would tell you to stay away from newer Kenmore machines. I know quite a few people who like Janome. I'll leave the machine recommendations to others, and instead point you towards getting started sewing. I really like Sew Mama Sew. They have plenty of instructions, projects from absolute beginner to very advanced, and a forum. I like their sew alongs too. Many of the pattern companies have websites with instructions and tips.
  21. It's not that bad. Even being past 50 isn't bad. Sometimes when I think about it, I'm shocked at how old I am. I certainly don't feel my age, though sometimes the aches and pains remind me (though they're not really age related). Try to remember 50 is the new 40. :grouphug:
  22. The only adaptation I've seen is the BBC one with Timothy Dalton. It was pretty good and fairly true to the book. I was hoping for a new one that's really good, but it sounds like I should skip this one.
  23. I think it's less about age and more about need. Ds got one at 9, but two things happened then. 1) We went to the inauguration and I was afraid he might get separated from us, and 2) We got rid of our landline. We were just starting to leave him home alone, and I wasn't about to leave him home without a phone. If neither of those events occurred, he probably wouldn't have had a phone for a few more years.
