  1. No, and I've never wanted one. I do think they look good on some people. I like to get henna tattoos every now and then. I like that they're temporary too.
  2. Don't you know your homeschooled children are "loosing" out on "makeing" friends?
  3. Florida has 3 options: 1. Register with your county as a homeschooler. Keep a portfolio of your child's work. Submit an annual evaluation - either testing, or a portfolio review done by a Florida certified teacher. The evaluation only needs to say that your child has made "progress commensurate with his abilities". 2. Enroll in a private umbrella school (technically your child is a private school student as far as the state is concerned). 3. Hire a private tutor. The tutor must be a Florida certified teacher, certified to teach the grade levels and subjects he or she is teaching your child. ETA: No tax breaks, but Florida doesn't have a state income tax anyway.
  4. This. The bolded. When you work at putting together a dish with flavors that compliment one another, having someone cover it with a condiment feels like an insult.
  5. Other. I don't like it, but I can't let it bother me because my dh is one of the biggest offenders.
  6. We had Directv, but cancelled it. We have a two Roku boxes (for the 2 main tv's), and use streaming through Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu Plus. We also have digital antenna tv. I don't know that we watch less tv, but we *are* more selective about what we watch. With satellite we'd just flip through the channels to find something, anything to watch. Now we have to actually choose what we want to watch. And it's so much cheaper!
  7. It depends on how you think you'll use the Kindle and how you feel about using a button to navigate a virtual keyboard. The keyboard is needed if you play games (I play a word game), when you want to create collections (to name your folders), and if you want to search for something within a book. The $79 one has a button where you have to scroll to each letter in order to make a word. If you have a Target near you, I saw one there last night, so you could check it out. The touch has a virtual touch keyboard. The Kindle Touch isn't out yet, but several people who have the Nook Touch have said prints aren't an issue. Because it's e-ink and not an LCD screen, smudges and prints don't show up like they do on a backlit screen. I have the Kindle Keyboard (known as the Kindle 3 before all then new ones came out). I ordered the Touch for ds. As a lefty, I'm a little skeptical of the touch screen because the back page area is right where I'd touch it with my left hand. I plan to play around with ds' when it arrives and see how I like it.
  8. I read that earlier today. That is VERY strange. Very possibly a coincidence, but very strange nonetheless.
  9. Yes it does. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution_of_morality http://www.centerforinquiry.net/blogs/entry/morality_evolved_first_long_before_religion/ http://www.paleoanthro.org/journal/content/PA20070034.pdf
  10. Mine is similar to yours except I mince the garlic so it stays in. I also toss in a green or red pepper if I have one on hand, and I always add oregano. I sometimes use chicken broth instead of water, or sometimes I put some ham in it. It's not exactly the same every time I make it. The jalapeno might not too spicy for the kids if you remove most of the ribs and seeds. That's where most of the heat is.
  11. I prefer cold brew, especially for reducing the acid. Both methods produce great tasting coffee though.
  12. I'm hoping he'll be out soon too. When I see the term graduate assistant, I think of barely over college age. Had he been a younger man I *might* be able to understand his confusion about what he should do. But a 28 year old is no kid. Call his dad? Go to the coach's house the next day? And worst of all, let that boy look you in the eye and just walk away? Disgusting. I agree that they felt they had to go from the top down. It will take years for the school (and football program) reputation to recover from this, so I'm thinking they're trying to start with the big guys and let the domino effect take over from there.
  13. This. And Joe said that while he didn't know specifics, he knew something of an inappropriate sexual nature had taken place. That should have been enough for any moral human being to take action.
  14. Both are old wives tales actually. Mucus is phlegm, which is produced by the respiratory system. Ingesting dairy products cannot make your respiratory system make more phlegm. It can however, make the mucus you already have feel thicker, so maybe that's where the tale comes from.
  15. Amazon allows up to 6 Kindle devices (phone apps, actual Kindle, etc.) on one account. However, some publishers will only allow their books to be read on up to 5 devices at a time. Not a problem unless you have more than 5 people wanting to read the same book at once on different devices. Yes, unfortunately. Amazon is really pushing Prime (the paid version) in advance of shipping the Kindle Fire. Because of that, many of the new Prime features are only for people who have the paid version.
  16. We have a 2004 (7 seater), which we bought in February of this year, and I love it. Our 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette got slightly better gas mileage, but for an older van, this one isn't bad. ETA: We have automatic sliding doors on both sides as well as an automatic back hatch. I love that feature!
  17. Actually the EBS was replaced by the EAS 14 years ago. The purpose of the test of the current system is the first step in bringing our alert system into the 21st century. The original was put in place in the 1950's, updated in the 1960's, and updated again in the 1990's. None of those upgrades included the digital world we live in now. Here's a better explanation.
  18. I think I read somewhere that they specifically chose the time in order to minimize interruption of people's viewing/listening. They'll know if it works without interfering with Glee or DWTS or whatever else people watch. If it's an actual emergency, they will of course interrupt whatever time they need to. Since this is a test though, why do it during prime time and get everyone upset (it could also mess up dvr settings)? I don't disagree though, that maybe they need a way to alert people who don't watch tv and/or who don't have a landline. Is there a reverse 911 for cellphones? I read that this test will not be heard over weather radios. We have one of those. In a real emergency, would they use weather radios in addition to broadcast radio and tv? I'm one who doesn't watch much tv even at night, and most of what I watch is on streaming anyway. Ds rarely watches. Dh is a tv addict. We all only listen to the radio when in the car (we listen to our iPods or cd's at home). So, if a real emergency occurs, I hope it happens when I'm driving, or at night when dh is home sitting in front of the tube. If not, I'll be clueless.
  19. I hope you don't mind. I just had to post this to facebook. Maybe it will help someone.
  20.:lol::lol: I'd like to add that we also know the difference between lose and loose.
  21. Dh and I lit one of those unity candles during our wedding ceremony. We each lit the candle from our own, then we were supposed to blow out our individual candles. I blew gently and my veil blew towards the flame. I tried again, and again my veil went towards the flame. I was afraid I'd set myself on fire if I blew hard enough to put the candle out. My brand new husband saw what was happening and blew the candle out for me. That scenario never even crossed my mind when we were planning our wedding ceremony. Sometimes a thing can appear perfectly safe and it's hard to understand why anyone would say no to it.
  22. :iagree:with all of the above. It seems 2 things happened in recent years. One is that people started wearing too much scent. Maybe when spray bottles became so common it was easier for people to wear too much. Spray bottles used to be the exception. The norm was a bottle of perfume or cologne that you had to dab on. I think most people would say they don't like overpowering perfume scents, even if the stuff smells wonderful in the right amount. The second thing is that somewhere along the line, any attempt to smell nice suddenly became "unnatural". The fact is, as Chucki already pointed out, we humans have used scents since our earliest days.
  23.:lol: Oh, I so agree with you but try telling that to my (or almost any) teenage boy!
  24. I'm with those who say to buy an inexpensive roast and cut it up, but I just have to say this - $3.50 a pound for any beef that isn't ground, is a "stock up" price around here. Even ground beef at that price would mean it's on sale.
  25. I tried the tomato one, the onion one, and those green bags (Debbie-something). None worked. I think the tomato container helped it go bad faster. :glare:
