  1. i just wanted to give you a heads up. If you were counting on the OOS tuition waver at Texas A&M, it has become a little more difficult. I believe you now need a $4,000 scholarship. https://scholarships.tamu.edu/Non-Resident-Tuition-Waiver Also , taking too many CC credits can be detrimental for admission programs such as Blinn team, engineering accademies, ect.at Texas A&M. Http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshman/coursework I am personally hearing of more denials due to high school students having too many credits (if you have the SAT or ACT required, this isn't an issue). Many OOS like the Blinn team ect, because the cost of OOS tuition at the CC is far lower. It is a great school, just didn't want you to have any nasty surprises. Hth!
  2. Gulf Shores Alabama looks beautiful with closest airport 45 minutes away in Mobile. I am a sucker for white sand beaches ! We have stayed in Destin with similar beaches, but only seen photos of GulfShores/Orange Beach. https://www.google.com/search?q=photos+of+gulf+shores+alabama&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#imgrc=2D4Ji43-lk_LBM:
  3. We like http://www.home2teach.com There is a writing level test, however. These are short classes of six weeks at about $85.00.
  4. When negotiating for a house, always end the number in 900 or 750 . It is puzzling, and distracting. If it is close enough, they seem to go for it. Maybe they think it is all you can do? Buy former rental cars with warranty and low miles vs. new. One spouse, one house....( if you can do it - not always possible) will save the most money. Time is more valuable than money, spend it on the ones you love. Close the vent on the Instantpot. It works better that way.
  5. Pokemon cards are actually a Math game. You each get so many cards and put one down like in war. If she battles your Pokemon first, then she chooses the attack and you have to subtract the hit points from your health located on the top of the card. Then you choose your attack from your card and she subtracts it from her pokemon's health. You could do this for math and when it got easier, double them. The health and hit points on each card. Hit points are the points from the attack that get subtracted. I have had kids that have strong intrests and I just go with it. Pokemon mononpoly game..math. Lots of Pokemon stuff that you could adapt to meet your educational goals. .Pokemon chaper books..not manga, but the scholastic older ones, Write Pokemon stories. Read to a stuffed plush pokemon. You could do active games..flying pokemon on swings.. bouncing pokemon about to evolve..pokemon leggos Ect.. I agree with having a behavior plan, and also wonder if moving and learning in a less traditional method would work. I would have tried a lot of this when I worked with kiddos with behavioral issues. I would only do an activity for 20 minutes, then do I would do some chores and she could play non screen stuff to let it soak in. Leave her wanting more. Come back and do something else. These are just ideas... of what I would start with. I would really focus on tying Pokemon and bouncing, swing walking, ect to school. They may not work at all. I am so sorry you are going through this! Sorry, as I lost a post and was rewriting it, I see others had same ideas.
  6. My DD got accepted at Texas A&M! Super fun to have both of my older kids there!
  7. I know Texas A &M encourages students to take the test as many times as they want and will only look at best total score. I have no experience with the academies.
  8. We had one on go through the entire program as written. Trig/precal were not in the published modules, but the Mr. Clark ( not sure if I have his name correct) suggested we work through the Trig for Dummies book to complete the credit. We did, and our son went on to Derek Owens Calc course. In hindsite, we would have done only a year of videotext Geometry. Next time we do this, we switch much earlier to a precalc program as my Ds1 felt like his trig was a little weak.
  9. Pennsylvania homeschoolers had a Macro AP course that might be a good fit. It is a combination of Teaching Company lectures and games on the computer that illustrate the economic concepts.http://www.aphomeschoolers.com/cgi-bin/choose.pl?class=economics The games can be engaging and thus time consuming, but it was one of my son's favorite classes. There were no actual classes, but lots of login time to play the games, and answer questions posted .There were some AP essay prompts throughout the year to help prepare for the test. Depending on future plans or ease of finding a place to test AP, you could either skip it or CLEP instead. Edited to add : This son of mine is not dyslexic.
  10. It sounds like you have a plan. I found taking my other kids to a school every morning (we did a half day progam at a private small school) to be more exhausting than staying at home. I felt like I was always waking up my little one, or hurrying to get somewhere. School deadlines, projects, and lunches took so much time. I also would check into homework required as sometimes you can not be homeschooling, but still needing to work with kids every evening. My kids are easy to get along with, but the teachers were slow at returning any work. I didn't see the problem with their work for a long time, the teachers kept saying it was all good. For us, it didn't end up being a good decision. I had to go back and think about why we homeschooled, and haven't looked back since. When I brought my kids home, I was able to find curricula that got done without being so exhausting. We hit the basics. It was freeing, and unfortunately I didn't give myself permisson until they had gone to school and used a different curricula. I guess I thought I had to use the most perfect one( no matter how much work) but the school just had to be a "good school". We did lots of video that year, but it is a time we would not trade. My kids can still quote Discovery Chanel /Cyberchase facts. I am just sharing my experience, and obviously many people here have had different experiences. I encourage you to do whatever is best for you and your family.
  11. Although my students communicate with their teachers , I do ask for a preview of the email before it is sent (for the younger high school students). I have my students copy me on their assignments if it possbile ( Derek Owens, Home2 Teach Writing). We work with the calander with the goal of organizing time for tests/ papers. Sometimes that skill comes early...sometimes not until they are ready for college.
  12. Is it possible to do concurrent enrollment or dual enrollment CC Spanish 1 &2 classes for senior year? Our public schools have both DE and AP classes, but I suppose you could do twice a week evening or Saturday classes. Sorry that happened!
  13. Oldest DS knew after PAH Macroecon class that he wanted to major in economics. He added a double major in math to increase the odds of getting a job after school. Since then, he was admitted to an invitation only Finace masters degree, so he dropped the math major to complete everything in five years. Oldest Dd wanted to graduate early and transfer into Special Ed.through a specific program of guaranteed acceptance. She changed her mind at the CC and decided on Occupational Therapy. She has had a tough time deciding what undergrad degree to get as she needs to graduate in 3 years. She applied as a transfer student in Pyschology, so that is the fist major she is hoping to have. She has also mentioned HR, or educational counseling degrees. She just turned 18,so it wouldn't surprise me if she wanted to try a few different majors.
  14. When my oldest was super young we had a digital clock in his room and he could come out of quiet time at 2:00. If we didn't get started at one o'clock, then I would just change the time on his clock so that there was an hour of quiet time. Over the years, even my super -social -needs - other- people -at -all -times -kiddo has grown to enjoy time to himself. It is a rythm to our day. If we are out in the afternoon, we can choose whether to have it or not. My kids are older and used to quiet time, so they respect if some choose to go to their rooms. Audio books and music were helpful for the transition as well as a definite time that it will end. I am cracking up over the taping faces...sometimes they just have to try. Self haircuts are popular too, so you may want to put the scissors up ( safety scissors cut hair and clothing).
  15. I keep waiting for cold weather to get the a/c fixed. We have only had it off for a week or two around the holidays. I guess this might be as cold as it is going to get. It was high 70's and humid yesterday, but my house was too warm in coastal Texas. I am from the midwest and although I don't miss the snow or extreme cold, I miss the 40 degree weather . I am hoping for some more of it down here this year! I would love to wear my sweater for a day.
  16. I agree with the part about egocentricity and working together sometimes, but I would add consequences for all ages. I will say that I get my teens' attention if I start thinking about creative consequences.
  17. This is our experience with corporate moves as well.
  18. Some relocation packages we have had have been veriy generous. Most of the time, we move before selling, just have papers signed for it to go on the market as soon as we are out and it is cleaned. We aren't there for the open houses/ showings. Our package has even included reimbursement for housing loss ( i.e. Paid more than can sell it for). I don't think I have ever heard of that for a new hire though, only if you were with the company when you bought and sold the house due to corporate moves. Could you get some adhesive and tack down the wallpaper? If you really need to paint over it, aren't there primers for that? Alternatively could you just put a up a textured wallpaper nuetral like sea grass or something over exsisting paper? I would not take on removing wall papers and doing repairs and painting prior to moves. Good luck!
  19. Are you doing that particular religion text because of CCE requirements for confirmation? I would think about adding to this course. Religion is a nonnegotiable here and happens daily. Some of our best discussions have been in this class. We have done some of the MODG religion syllabi, bible study together using this free resource https://stpaulcenter.com/studies/courses/ Tim Staples has some good cds, https://homeschoolconnectionsonline.com/unlimited-access-1 has some great recorded classes. Imo , this is the time to start answering the deep questions, to assign books that have made great spiritual impacts on your family, to understand the whys. We even read and discussed Boundaries in Dating and that kind of thing. Is the social studies class due to an interest on his part? If so, would you want to combine an Eastern Lit class with it? If you don't go that route,is his grammar solid? If you could you add a composition component (like Bravewriter or home2teach or something you come with) to his literature for His English credit instead of doing Seaton and Lit that would save time. Are you planning on four years of Spanish? If not, could Philosophy wait? I think you have had some excellent advice. I would especially check out what you need for future goals when homeschooling high school in New York. Figure out what your core classes are, but also have an interest class for your son every semester. The only way most students know what they want to do after high school is by interest sparked through a class or volunteer/life experience. My favorite memories are the discussions, and learning together (although it wa hard to keep up at times). Hth!
  20. I haven't read through the whole thread. In the past, I would have reacted pretty emotionally. It is an action that pretty much screams inconsideration. There were so many of these type things that would happen each day. However, now I tend to just assign a consequence and move on.. no emotional reponse needed. Boy can do a few extra loads of laundry or something. It is amazing how consequences in my house have helped people who "couldn't remember" to improve their memory . Lectures and emotionality made my kids' eyes glaze over and didn't change anything. I don't feel as upset now. Plus, I get all my laundry done by someone else:). Win, win. Of course if your laundry room floor is not beloved by your two long haired shedding dogs like mine is, I would probably brush off the jeans and call the owner to come get them. Other inconsiderate teen behavior gets my chores done though.
  21. I wear it every day. If I am at home or just wanting to have a caual look, it is only cc cream (spf 50) a little gel blush ,eyeliner, some lip pencil with lansolin on top,and a quick brush of powder. It only takes about 90 seconds, and it makes me feel good all day. I follow the same youtubers and feel like I look better thwn I have in years.
  22. That is the route we took with my oldest. The free school therapist didn't make much progress although to be fair, she did miss about a forth of his sessions. Sadly our insurance didn't cover, but it worked. Glad you are finding a productive therapist!
  23. Thanks! Now I know what to get for my stocking next year. This year I couldn't think of a thing except the Lindt chocolates. All things that I love!
