  1. Would Spectrum Chemistry be a good fit? My husband has an advanced degree in chem, and was pretty impressed by the content. It might be worth checking out. We really liked it. I could understand the text with my nonexistent chem background. Sorry, I misread your post. I was thinking your son finished the high school chemistry and the high school physics, not the class that combined the two. Ok, what about Rainbow science from the same company? http://beginningspublishing.com/version2/rainbow.htm We haven't used this one, but it has excellent reviews on WTM. Rechecking it, you may want to find out if there is religious content to make sure it agrees with your view. I don't recall it being an issue in chem.
  2. My oldest daughter is a senior, so I am looking forward to having her home one more year. She is an early graduate and taking all classes at her cc. I am looking forward to all the fun senior memories. My DS(10) just finished vison therapy - happy dancing here. It worked, and I don't have a VT bill every week. No VT homework!! He will be in a hybrid homeschool this year. I am lookng forward to having a bit more energy to put into our projects. We are finally in Bartons 8 and I am so looking forward to being done! My middle daughter is taking mostly outsourced courses for the first time. Dad is saying he wants to teach her math! I think she is really going to enjoy the discussions. Looking forward to finding our thing to do together. I am looking forward to trying some new things. There is an art class that my husband and I are going to try . A few groups for me to join at church. I haven't really gotten involved in much here since we moved 5 years ago. I am finding I don't identify with the newer and much younger homeschoolers/groups as much as I did in the past. It is a bit weird, because for many years at different locations, that was my tribe. I am branching out. My kids don't need me as much. I will have more time. I'm a little nervous, but it is time to start looking for activities for me, and friends for me.
  3. Did a Realtor.com search and the lowest was 1.1 million. There were only three. My area used to have acrages with horses a four or five years ago. They can't build houses fast enough here, and the acreages are being subdivided, The lot size was really the factor. The houses with half an acre ranged lower into the 500's, and lot sizes of .25 acre are into the 300 hundreds. All were newish houses, and the half acre and above had wonderful amentites. I could only find one with 3,000 square feet and .5 acre. Most homes were 4,000 up with the majority in the 6,000 square foot range.
  4. I don't know if it would make it more appealing, but many cc have honors schools, programs, and scholarship. You could check into whether her cc has Phi Theta Kappa. At my daughter's school they have monthly meetings re: scholarship opportunites to four year schools. My daughter is hasn't made it to a meeting yet, but it looks like pretty serious goal oriented kids. The four year school my DD is planning on transferring to has a pretty sweet two year Phi Theta Kappa scholarships with amounts ranging from $1500 to $10,000 per year. Her community college often has scholarships that go unclaimed every year as well. Your DD could get her first year and half much cheaper that she thinks. My thought was that if you said one year at Cc, that could include two summers ( more classes for less money:) . Ironically,my DS who went the four year route out of high school, was Nm commended, got zero scholarship money. His sister never took the SAT and may come in with a scholarship and at least sophmore status. Your DD could have some great resume material here as well as great recs from professors that actually know her .
  5. I've handed breakfast and lunch off to the kids to cook. If you have a freezer, you can freeze the fresh fruits and veggies for smoothies. We have them for breakfast probably 8 months of the year. I think my Mom puts her kale in ice trays so that it is easier to use. Every grocery store usually has organic frozen fruit too. Thre are some online recipes of frozen fruit popsicles. Just what you wanted, more food to prep-sorry. For many years I cooked for picky eaters and it did turn out that food intolerances were involved. It is no fun,and I totally feel for you! Could you freeze leftovers and heat them up on a different day, maybe? Do they plan or shop with you? Sometimes that helped me, if they didn't shut down when I wouldn't put processed food on the list. Garga- Your husband can precook dinners or do freezer cooking for a month on the weekends:). Then he can be happy and not be so jealous of your time to cook. Dinner does not need to be prepared at 5:00 pm. If he loves it, then he can cook tomoorrow's dinner after eating tonight's dinner. Everybody is happy. It is amazing what more outdoor time and exercise will do for an appetite? Maybe those picky eaters might enjoy a swim, walk, week the garden, ect.." Prepare what you like. I noticed I used to get burned out when I didn't make the foods I enjoyed. If they aren't going to be happy, at least you will? You can present good food. It is not your job to make big people eat it.
  6. Great job! Just a reminder to back up these time consuming documents. Have a plan B in case your hard drive crashes. Mine crashed without warning (a few years after applications) and I only had one hard copy. I am thankful that I have it, but i wish it was in a zip drive or something.
  7. We like them too, but if the OP's child is a tenth grader and places into Foundations1,her dc might not get to the paragraph class until late 11th or 12th grade which seems a little late. I have kids in the Foundations classes and there is only one actual writing assignment per week( the other two assignments are vocabulary and typing practice). The paragraph class was not always postive, but a good learning experience overall. The younger classes seem to be positive, but not much feedback. If it were my student, and he/she didn't place into the paragraph class, I would consider Bravewriter first, and redo the writing test later if I still wanted to do Home2Teach.
  8. Maybe Home2Teach? It would depend on where he places in the writing testing. The paragragh class was a complete Godsend (both times). That said, the instructor wasn't as positive as I would have liked. I think my DD1 learned so much from the daily revisions that she had to turn in. My DD1 gained confience and skill and is doing well in cc with essay tests. The lower levels of Home2Teach don't have much feedback, so I am not sure I would start Home2Teach much lower than the paragraph class. We like it being a live course.
  9. Ok, I think you alread know OP, when you said, "Maybe this a subjective, you'll know it when you see it kind of thing." IMHO, you decide what you want ,customize, and work backward. What do you want your eldest to know by the time she graduates high school? What does she want to know? Use whatever materials get you to that point. Videos to discuss, younger kids' materials, hands on activities, however they learn. Start as basic as you need to, but keep track of your time and materials. I am not a huge believer in a one size fits all plan. Make sure that knowledge is gained. It is not about the books you buy and don't use. It's not about exams that test your short term memory. Ninth grade isn't twelfth grade. I enjoy the ideas presented in this old time homeschool book: https://www.amazon.com/Senior-High-Home-Designed-Form-U/dp/1887639098/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466795745&sr=8-1&keywords=senior+high+a+home-designed+form+u+la. I have to say, I didn't use her ideas and don't agree with some of them, but It is refreshing to see some practical skills mixed with academic skills. I like the idea of mixing traditional curriculm with other resources. How many threads have we all read about Chemistry and Physics , where the emphasis is on understanding pre- Algebra and Algebra? I think the same is true across the curriculm. Don't rush to do a term paper in ninth grade if sentence and paragraph structure isn't strong. Take lots of time to insure you have a good foundation and maintain the love of learning. Work toward the end goals. Unless your state has input on this, I think you are the only one that decides what is enough. I was way too worried about college and didn't follow this all of the time. Unfortunately there were times that I checked boxes and chose perceived rigor/testing over true education.
  10. I would buy much nicer bookcases! Also, I would buy 40 pairs of matching white socks.
  11. We call it a family scholarship. Grades need to be high. They know it is hard for us to pay for college, so we expect them to do their part. The scholarship can be revoked if need be. School meal plans are optional after freshman year, so we do give a lump sum for food each semester that he/soon she can spend on a meal plan or not. This is significant money that can be used for groceries(cheaper) spending money/ grabbing food on campus. He may not spend that money the way I would prefer, but he doesn't starve and is so appreciative of all food now. It I give him a few cans of soup that you don't add water to, he is in heaven.
  12. I would get a new -to -me -car. Sounds like too much trouble with the old one and I love Siennas. Often you can get a great deal on a 2-3 year old van. We have had good luck in the past buying fomer rental cars with low miles30-40,000. Some of the rental cars even have their own lots. You can get a warranty...though it is usually only a year through the dealer.
  13. It makes me so sad, but it is not surprising. I have seen adult parents volunteering in pre-k in public schools correcting kids for using their mouth or having a tongue out when using scissors, because "It's ugly." Uh, it's normal, and developmental actually. I worked with sensory kids for years and they have a special place in my heart...this situation makes me mad, then makes me wander what their hiring process is. Of course, like everything else, it is probably skill related without any training about children. You can swim, great now teach them. You don't know or even like children? That is ok, because we won't even ask about that.
  14. Hormone levels and liver health can cause this. You can have normal liver enzymes but your liver can be really enlarged.

    My boss

My DD is a big youtube hair and makeup fan. The elchim brand us good and 170+. More heat=faster drying/more shine, but for a guy? A toddler? Maybe make sure there is a cool air function, as little kids have sensitive scalps.
  16. nm posted without reading throughly. Hugs for you and your daughter.
  17. I would probably not send him. I second the pros and cons list. If I was keeping my child home, I wouldn't lie and say he doesn't feel well, but I might sign the paper for homeschooling and do a few fun K things while we pack. Will you regret not sending him /sending him to finish K in a few years? Do whatever you think is best for him. He probably needs to say goodbye to his school friends and teacher on the last day that you designate will be his last day. As far as security goes, I don't think there is anything more secure than being with mom and dad. I would structure the packing days, so he knew what was happening and when meals would happen( my kids are always interested in this).
  18. My DS2 read his first book for fun, and is excited to start the next. After a rough few days, this is great. Yep, he's 10, and I don't think dyslexic, but has vision therapy issues. We are almost finished with Bartons 7. Yay for minecraft books !
  19. Glad I have some company. I think I have three if these. My oldest DD once got her co-op class an early pizza party. She observed that when the boys got loud, the teacher would try to calm things down by offering to put exta puff balls or something in the pizza party jar. When the jar was full , they would have a party. On regular days it was 1-2, on loud days it was 5-10. So my DD encouraged the boys to be as loud as they could a few times each week and to immediately stop when the teacher would offer the extra puff balls. The jar filled up in no time. I don't think the teacher ever caught on. I think they had three or four pizza parties that year. Its funny when it happens to someone else:).
  20. Thanks for the encouragment and game ideas. Law..hmmm that might fit my middle daughter who loves history, writing and loopholes.
  21. Hmmm. You may not be able to count on getting C :). Perhaps you could do B , then for the continuation course buy C. If I remember correctly, you can do a different level of the continuation. I would call IEW too, maybe they have some ideas. They used to sell the teachers pages for A B C on a yellow cd rom that came with the program , so you could make copies of all of the levels. Maybe they would sell you one? There was an active yahoo group a few years back in which the IEW staff would answer questions . Jill Pike (homeschool mom and IEW employee) was super helpful as she had kids that learned differently . HTH
