  1. Peanut butter and miracle whip sandwhiches ( mayo in a pinch if no miracle whip) Some of the candy...especially the one that you lick and stick in the sugary flavored powder ..here it is. So you lick it, dip in the sugar, and continue the process of coating the candy with salivaand then flavored sugar. Yuck. http://www.stumpsparty.com/event/fun-dips-candy/pgp/zb5f03g?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=&utm_term=PRODUCT+GROUP&stumpstrackid=spps&gclid=CKfOvcWmks8CFdgBgQodOPoNQw Off brand soda made with saccarine .... I used to dream of having enough money to buy shasta.
  2. I have to second the IT cosmetics cc cream 50 spf. Amazing. Kat von D eyeliner in brown. It is a very fine line and easy to work with, even for me (I am not coordinated in the mornings). I can swim in it and it stays all day. It is very subtle, but makes me look good even without mascara. Benitint for cheeks and lips. It is a stain and you have to be quick to rub it in, but the color is beautiful and natural. It is a very thin liquid like water, so it lasts a long time and smells like roses. If I was adding more I would add A&D ointment . I use that stuff on my unbelieveably dry feet, put a large ziplock over my foot, followed by a sock and tennis shoe. Twenty minutes later, it is like I have someone else's foot. I am enjoying Domonique Slache's Youtube channel. She is you tuber who is about my age and has wonderful recs on products. She is a newscaster, who has had to do her own makeup and hair for years. Its pretty fun and I am getting great ideas. Now I have close to a page of must haves But I narrowed it down for a minimal look.
  3. Violet Cera? Violet Trea? Violet Therese?
  4. I know we have a family friend who had a difficult time getting a job he was very qualified for in the U.S. A few companies did not all see the degrees as comparable. He had an equivalency form and everything. He was advised do have to get masters degrees inthe U.S. to get past this. Others probably work for more enlightened companies. Just a cautionary observation for a science field grad.
  5. I have no idea if this idea would work, but I used to designate part of the paper for the word they were supposed to write. Only the word could go there. I would also give them margins or half of the paper for putting down whatever came in their head. My girls needed to doodle or write something they were thinking of to clear their head at times.
  6. Does it need to be a saint's name or are all names game?
  7. We have always homeschooled three out of four kids. My youngest enrolled in a two day school this year. We like the social and religious aspects of it, as well as some academics. We requested some customization that they advertise and there was pushback. We have now opted for nongrading options, and are happily customizing classes to him. We have a similiar experience with his next older sister online, It feels like these places are taking advantage of homeschoolers, especially new ones. I hear the phrase "accountable" thrown around a lot. I don't pay people and expect them to hold me accountable. That seems weird and based on weight watcher experiences here...doesn't work. I am accountable to God and myself, but not to outsourced classes. Their grades aren't important, and they seem to want to ruin everything good about homeschooling. We opted for no grading in one, and the other left grading as there are papers, and i like to see if there my be feedback, These schools have an inflated view of their importance, we just want a few interesting classes, and PE, and recess. I really don't need anyone to educate my children, they don't get that these are just fun extras. They advertize their accredidation and act like people can't get to college without it. Accredited by who? Why make a big deal out of the testing becase of accreditation, and then make it mandatory to retake tests until a certain grade is acheived, Ridiculous. In my state , it is better to apply as a homeschooler anyway. Why are homeschoolers drinking this kool aide?
  8. He has the right to do this. I don't agree or support and frankly think the rationale is ridiculous ,but I will defend his free speech. I also think people who disagree with him have the right to express their view. This is America.
  9. i think it boils down to whether parents feel it is a madatory obligation to pay for college or a privilege earned by the student. Are all students entitled to a free education funded by parents no matter what? I'm in the "no" camp. Sometimes, the college enviornment can be unhealthy for individuals. They make their own choices, but with choices are consequences. Happy to pay for school , but there are strings. Good grades, good moral lifestyle seem pretty minimal to me, but I worked a bunch of jobs to put myself through school. I didn't have the opportunity for a free education. I wouldn't give them drug money either...ect. Money comes with strings. Now, I would still love them, but couldn't fund any type of lifestyle that Imo would be detrimental to them.
  10. We have used home2teach with success, but I think a tutor situation would be better in his case. Home2 teach levels lower than paragraph are probably a little too slow with minimal feedback.
  11. Looks like Write guide is out of buisness per their facebook link and missing web page. Bummer.
  12. My kids love it. Here it is pretty valuable when reading is quite difficult . I have noticed that as fluency and endurance improve, they are less likely to continue to listen to someone else telling a story, or give information. So after ramping up the endurance about 1-1/2 yers after completion of Bartons 8, it seems like the desire to listen to information/litererature isn't there. I am not sure if that is specific to LA, however, that is when I start hearing complaints about the voices/accents. We have been using LA for mostly leisure and it has preserved my kids love of a good story. It has been a long time since I have tried the other options. Being able to immmediately download something is great. If I had to pay for each selection, I think we might have been too conservative with downloads. I can't seem to find what we want in audio at our library.HTH!
  13. DS just moved dorms as he was in summer school. My DH helped move a few things from home over. He enjoys his time there so much , that "home" visits as just that. I am not sure that he will come live with us for an entire summer. He even works on campus and may need to work over a few holidays. Fortunately, he has a wonderful schedule, and i can look forward to visiting him for some lunch dates on alternate Fridays. I miss my boy.
  14. I love Texas. The hot weather...not so much. I lived in California and the weather was perfect..every single day. You would think that would be tiring. Not really! I love the people in Texas though. California , or at least where I lived lacked any kind of diversity except age. This time of year in Texas is like the midwest in the winter. Not the best time to spend outside. We tend to spend most of our time outdoors in the evening and in water. Good time of year to watch all of the Alaska winter "reality" shows. Ice cream is not optional.
  15. Insta pot convert here! Dump either a big pkg of frozen meat or a bag of dried beans, onions, spices, mushrooms and water or broth or tomato sauce in the machine. Usually I add wild rice. Set the timer ..dinner in 45 minutes. i get those 45 minutes to make salads and relax with a cup of tea, or whatever I want to do. A HUGE hit at my house.
  16. Any to way to confer her diploma in a state that would recognize it (graduation trip to another state)? Many states do not "recognize"diplomas, but also do not regulate what must be taken. She then would have have a high school diploma, though not from NY? I don't think it would change her career, unless childcare facility wanted all to have a high school diploma or something. She would then be able to produce her diploma.
  17. I like Home2teach at the paragraph level class. The writing assignments in this class are submitted daily prior to 1:00 pm . My DD would sometimes submit before 9:30, get it back and submit again. She did IEW prior to this. DD placed into paragraph class, but I have other kids in some of the other classes. Classes prior to paragraph are good for the younger crowd but feedback is limited to "good job" or please correct this one item. I am not sure if that would be what you are looking for . The daily revisions with feedback made all of the difference. It is $85 for a six week course with a writing sample required. Next class starts soon. hth
  18. It may work, but I think it won't work as well as seeing the COVD. I refused to see my COVD's " assistant" and made it clear. The office made it seem like they were interchangeable. The cost was the same, ect. it is a money maker for the office! The assistant in my case was a high school graduate and was attending cc for nursing pre-requisites ( history and comp classes). Yikes. That may not be the case for you. Ask questions, find out how how the non COVD personnel are trained. Weekend courses? On the job training? I didn't have confidence that the office trained personnel could change course of treatment based on how my kids were performing during session. It is like paying for the expertise of an O.T. and getting an O.T aide and still paying through the nose. The OT aide has been trained a little and observed O.T., but she won't be able to adjust treatment to accomodate progress, regression, fatigue , increase in skill, enurdance ,ect... I am not saying it won't work a little, but I personally would keep looking. On a financial note, i think it is insane to pay much for that. It was $140 a session for my family to see a COVD, and the same $ to see a kid a few years older than one of my kids being treated with the same education. No thanks. But i respect you may not feel the same way. Get a price adjustment based on who you see?
  19. Does he have quite a few colleges on his short list? Does the application for fall 2017 begin in Aug of 2016? A few of the large flag ships here open applications on Aug 1, 2016 for fall enrollment in 2017. If that is the case, sometimes an open house will address things like whether they want a weighted gpa, how homeschoolers apply, and other things I would want to know before applying.
  20. I would second home2 teach if he can place in the paragraph class.Op could do this for a year and go back to TOPS if she still wanted to at a higher level. I had a DD his age that wrote similarily and she really matured in this course. I believe the daily and (even more frequent if he can submit his work by early to mid morning) feedback and revisions were helpful. Almost all of the students take this class twice, so it is about 12 weeks of instruction. My DD did take a few courses after this from http://www.home2teach.com/classes/ , then placed into her comp class at the CC. She recieved the only A in the class. If his writing sample places him in a lower class, I might do it if it, depending on the class. If he placed in the earliest class called Foundations, there would be a year of classes before he reached the age 14 plus classes. That could be ok, as the earliest classes do provide a basic foundation, but the feedback isn't extensive or even all that helpful for someone aged 14...more of a "good job" kind of thing. You could easily combine this with IEW B and work on a five paragraph essay at the same time. Hth
  21. Glad you found the info! Your DS probably could do the Chem, if he has the math. That is our sticking point this year. My younger kids loved being involved with the labs for Chemistry, so I imagine the Rainbow Science labs meant for their ages would be good. I loved the book for Chem. It was colorful, short and sweet. It had the perfect mix for me of a bit of infomality without going overboard. Apologia can sometimes be so conversational that I get too bored and drift off. It is pricey, but you can use it over two years. I think most of the cost is for those amazing labs. Now I want to go buy something. Hmmm ..school supplies should be on sale.
  22. OhElizabeth, A whiteboard on wheels was my favorite thing on a different year:). I scrimped for that thing! You will love it. Pretty colored markers are necessary too.
