  1. I bought a cheap Hoover Wind tunnel rewind 2 pet vacuum and it works really well. It was supposed to be a back up to my meile, but it is about twice as good (as the so expensive Meile)for a forth the price. Just remember to rinse out the filter once in a while. I totally forgot about this until it started over heating, no problems since.
  2. Hugs! If you decide to keep her home the last 20 days, remember that along with read alouds ( which you would probaby need to do even if she went to school):Magic School Bus, CyberChase,,documentaries and nature walks are great. Maybe it is time for some Life of Fred? I am glad you are getting some therapy, and second the getting more help to get some alone time to process everything.
  3. We had friends that put on plays based on these: http://www.amazon.com/William-Shakespeares-Star-Trilogy-34-inch/dp/1594747911 Maybe getting used to the language would make Shakespeare easier? I know it sounded like a blast!
  4. I'm not a fan, but if you are interested , I think you would need to meet with the tutor for next year. Although the curriculum is supposed to be the same across the board, some tutors do more writing. One of our tutors "helped" her students by having them write all the math problems , ect. Lots of quick reading in the games designed for memory work, so slower readers or writers had a lot of difficulty. Fifth grade is the last year in the regular program,I think. So the emphasis will be on memory masters. Most of the kids will already know this stuff, as they have been memorizing the same exact stuff for years, so your student might feel a little left out. Hth
  5. My son isn't having much luck securing an internship as a sophmore. He was so bored over the spring break. He is planning on knocking out a few courses in the summer at home. I think I will encourage him to spend at least one summer term at the school he attends during the year taking a class or possibly getting involved in some research. There is much less going on in the summer there....but more than there is for him to do at home.
  6. I agree with you mostly. I am not sure if the public universities are all over charging. U of MI liberal arts degree tuition is around $6,000, though, and that seems doable with a part time job ( if available) or loan. It looks like the housing is pretty expensive per semester, it is double what we pay( and my DS doesn't have to use a meal plan. Sandwiches and crockpot meals are super cheap,) If the subsidized govt loans cap at $5,500 freshman year, books and living costs are going to be a problem in areas where employment is a challenge.Edited: nm . The $6,000 is per semester. I am estimating $32,000 per year for dorm, dining and tuition? Crazy.
  7. I haven't read all of the replies, but it seems like two different things are going on here. One, people are destitute and having quite a bit of trouble providing for their basic needs. The other is whether the university should provide for those needs. I wish the universities could just provide a good basic education without the frills at a much lower cost. They don't need to provide food, housing, ect.
  8. edited..nm We had plans, but didn't end up using them GL
  9. I did a very quick and not- so- through- search for these plus loans. It does seem like they need to be co-signed at the undergraduate level. The choice of college does seem to be the end goal for some parents and their students. It seems weird to me that they wouldn't be planning further than the degree. What kind of life do you want to live? What kind of career do you want? How will you get it and what will it pay? We have always lived in communities full of practical engineers and have heard, " I am not sending my kid to an Ivy for a degree in social work. There needs to be some sort of rationale for spending that kind of money" and "Have you run the numbers? You might be able to get the same job from a good state school, or get into a more elite school for graduate work where it is free ( assuming a science type degree)." Some of these I hadn't heard often, but certainly remembered them when the time came for college applications.
  10. Sorry, lost my post the other day somehow. My DD who had VT said she now experiences those letter changes close to the side margins of the paper, but not in the middle. She said it varied before, and wasn't consistent. She thinks it is a pretty accurate way to display what her reading used to be like at times. It tends to be difficult to explain.
  11. Why would anyone take out $120,000-190,000 in loans? There is something seriously lacking in in kids' education/maturity if they attend a college they can't afford to have all of this increased stress, ect. I don't get it. Cost for benefits should be considered. I feel for these kids, but what were they thinking? There are so many lower cost options. Somehow there is a disconnect between the idea of loans being real money and how that will impact their life when working. Stupid and just very sad.
  12. Edited: Saxon placement test just wasn't compatible with my computer. Got it to work on a different computer. If any of you are seeing nonsense answers, try a different computer/configuration.
  13. My son only needed Calc 2, but he ran into engineering friends that had a difficulty switching from Calc 2 at CC for Calc 3 at university. It is better to the entire sequence Calc 1-3 at the same place seems to be the consensus I hear often.
  14. So great that you found someone with those credentials. I used to give visual percetual tests, and only scored in the 2 percentile myself. Out VT will not see adults, but i guess I could help myself by doing the my DS exercises and using his flipppers :). Wish I could be of more help. I really do not know what tests were run on our case.
  15. Oh yes. My DD who sees the words exactly like this has been through a couple of screenings. Ironically, she was the one of the three tested that didn't need it. My other DD did have VT, and it was amazing. It just didn't have any effect upon this.
  16. Ok, one DD says reading is exactly like this. Other daughter says it is similar for her but only on the sides of the page. wow.
  17. Interesting. I'll have to have my girls look at this. I usually hear that the letters/words usually dance and turn or slide sideways(one daughter). I'll check to see what she thinks about the link. This DD has had a few VT assessments and doesn't need V.T. I am not well versed in this, but it seems like there are different causes/types of dyslexia? I am guessing that the brain imaging when reading would be different from other dyslexics and non dyslexics as well.
  18. I am trying to like all of your posts, but for some reason, I can't. I do like them, and appreciate that you took the time to post the ideas!!! Thank you all so much, and keep them coming. I think I will make a little minicookbook with meal ideas, so I can just grab and cook a few when needed.. The area of the U.S. I grew up in didn't do this. I think that is why I am drawing a blank!
  19. Riding bikes, playing chicken on bikes( wait, I didn't like that part) Playing football in the street and yelling,"Car," as a warning Dipping rhubarb in a bowl of sugar Eating garden tomatoes like apples and salting them. sitting up the big tree, watching the world Popcicles and bare feet Playing basketball woth my Dad Walking to the library, and dime store and really everywhere I wanted Hours talking and shelling sunflower seeds leaving them everywhere walking to the pool and geting super hot on the 2 mile walk, so the pool felt like pure heaven Ice cream after swimming Catching lightning bugs ( then letting them go) Sledding down the golf course hills, and after walking home pulling the sled a few miles, drinking lots of hot chocolate Skating on the ponds the city froze Wow..realizing that my childhood was way more active than I thought.. And there was a lot of food!
  20. Help. I have no idea what types of dinners to make for new moms or people that need assistance with meals. I have the time( no little ones at home), but my family likes foods that are too spicy for most. If anyone brought you a meal as a new mom or if you werent feeling well, what was your favorite?
  21. Yes, you could where I live. The library is quite good and free interlibrary loan , with a limit of 10 . Banks of computers and printers and tables to work on. You can check out study rooms which have a whiteboard and markers(though the markers go missing )for a few hours a day. There are bookclubs , including some homeschool ones and craft/movie afternoons for younger set at the library. It even has a Starbucks, and though I am not a fan, it does combine my two favorite things in the world: books and coffee. Ok, personally I would add coffee to required homeschool materials. Edited to add: i think that math books can be obtained. Basic arthmatic could be done with manipluatives (could use anything-wouldn't need to buy anything) and later a white board or paper and pencil. Junior high/ Senior high math could be done. Free tutoring in math and physics at my library. Some of the older 1940's math books are sitting in my Amazon cart. I don't know if this college would have access to these, but probably through interlibrary loan from a college.
  22. I think our lives are intertwined in many ways. I have seen relationships that I never thought could be loving, healed by cargiving at the end of life. I don't think I am explaining this well, but being able to love and care for someone at the end is a gift and changes those they leave behind . That said, I am all for any and all pain relief available as the suffering person desires and support and respite for caregivers.
  23. Sorry, i meant the helmet my daughter wore didn't hurt her and also wasn't beautiful. People are always beautiful. Hers was a white helmet made of the plastic hard splinting material. We had to get it readjusted every so often. She developed this flatness over one week of having a cold and preferring to turn her head only one direction. My doc said even with repositioning her so that she favored the other side , it wouldn't rehape her head to the extent that it needed. I think I did try while waiting for an appointment. I didn't want my beautiful baby in that thing, but our pediatrician was one of the few docs that i really trust. He thought she would be sorry we didn't do it as she grew up.
  24. You have a limited window to correct this. My daughter wore one...and it completely worked. Yes, not beautifiul cosmetically, but it doesn't hurt the child. If you want different opinions, get them quickly.
