What are your kids working on today?
rootsnwings replied to phathui5's topic in General Education Discussion Board
DS10 is working on: Typing the answers to his SOTW Ch. 31 Review Questions right this minute. He just finished up Rikki Tikki Tavi in Lit and we had some discussion about it--he answered a few questions. He's already finished up a spelling assignment and his LA/grammar workbook assignments. He still has on the schedule for today: Singapore Math 4B: Textbook - pg 18-19 Workbook - pg 25-26 (exercise 9) Mental Math 1 - 21-26 Cambridge Latin: Read pg 20-24 along with audio CD Read 1st story online Practice Stage II vocabulary flashcards 1pg cursive workbook as soon as the neighbor-kid gets home from school they'll work on his snap-circuit set for a little while. :) -
I will just say I have a 10pc stainless set and one piece of stoneware and the stone is the *only* thing I use for baking (besides my cast iron skillet--love that thing too!) I have the pizza stone w/ built in handles from pampered chef and it is seriously the only "pan" I ever use. I do like the stainless set for on the stove but if you're in the market for a new pan, get the stoneware. You will NOT regret it and honestly I do t see anyone ever needing more than one (unless you break one--my hubby was trying to flip the cornbread out of the cast iron skillet and onto the stone and slammed the skillet to the stone, cracking it into...just one reason testosterone doesn't belong in the kitchen!!!! ;))

I'm ordering this for my 4th grader and will give a review after we've used it a few weeks! :)

Thinking about introducing Latin
rootsnwings replied to ClassicalTwins's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We're using Cambridge Lating--we just started this semester and both DS9 (almost 10) and I are REALLY enjoying it! I have no Latin background and its fairly easy and straightforward to teach/learn. HTH!! :) -
MCT Caesar's English
rootsnwings replied to Lostinabook's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
Interesting! We just started Cambridge this semsester and ds9 is zooming through it! I was planning on one stage taking about 3 weeks using the student text, workbook, audio CD & online resources but he is flying through the chapters in just 10 days or so! Just saying don't underestimate your ds!! :D This is ds9's (and my!) first exposure to Latin and we are really enjyoing it! :) One thing about Cambridge is that it is NOT very strong on grammar (not yet, anyway)--is this something CE could supplement with? I am really trying to justify not doing English Grammar next year and am looking for a program that will help with our Latin Grammar. Is CE more grammar or just vocabulary? -

I got this one http://www.premier.us/tools-planning/products-students/planners/product-line/journey-success%E2%84%A2?category=31[/url] for ds at the beginning of the schoolyear and it has been perfect for our needs! It has 5 lage blocks for M-F and then 2 smaller blocks for Sat/Sun. They have spaces marked for Language arts/Reading/Spelling, Math, Social Studies & I write in for Latin, Memory Work, Logic, Typing & Cursive in the extra space provided at the bottom of each day. www.premier.us is the website & they have student planners for k-college. :) HTH!! :D

I make a "corndog pie" using 1 box jiffy yellow cornbread mix + 4-5 hotdogs, sliced into rounds. Make the cornbread & pour it into a hot cast iron skillet, with a light coating of oil, pre heated. Add the hotdog chunks & bake at 400 for 20-25 min, or until top of cornbread is golden brown. Immediately transfer from skillet by turning it over onto a plate so the "top" of the pie can get nice & crispy. Serve with ketchup or mustard, or both! :) My kids love this and it's perfect for when I don't want to cook! Sometimes I also add a can of mexicorn, undrained (which is how I make my regular cornbread) and just add a splash of milk instead of the 1/3 cup of milk the cornbread box calls for. My kids love it either way! :)

How do you survive homeschooling?
rootsnwings replied to warriormom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Strive to thrive and everyone survives! If you have your kids engaged in learning things they love, they are thriving. Families who are thriving don't think twice about surviving. :) -
foreign language advice
rootsnwings replied to Alison in KY's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
We are really enjoying Cambridge Latin. We just started a couple months ago but it has *really* captured both mine and ds(almost10)'s attention. We're not so worried about Latin grammar right now but both really enjoy the vocabulary aquisition and translating we get to do with Cambridge. My goal right now is exposure, not mastery, and Cam ridge is fitting the bill perfectly for us. You can check out the first couple stages on their website to see if it something you'd be interested in. We're hoping to finish the Cambridge sequence in 8th grade when we'll begin a more formal program... HTH! :) -

French curriculum suggestions for kindergarten

Mmmm I always get compliments on my Chicken & Dumplins! :) I use 4 all natural boneless/skinless chicken breasts, boiled in 2 cans chicken broth + 2 cans water. Add a handful of parsley flakes, lots of pepper, NO SALT (the chicken broth provides plenty!) When the breasts are cooked through, remove them and let them rest, then shred the chicken. Add another 2 cans of chicken broth + 2 more cans of water, bring to a rapid boil (about medium-high heat) For dumplins, I use the refridgerated pie crusts by pillsbury. There are 2 pie crusts in each box & I use 2 boxes, so 4 pie crusts. Just roll them out & slice them with a pizza cutter into about 2"x4" dumplins. After chicken broth/water comes to a rapid boil, add dumplin strips. Add another handful of parsley flakes & another good dose of pepper. Add 1 TBS flour to help thicken. Add shredded chicken. Again, NO SALT! Add a lid & let boil for about 10 minutes with a few gentle stirs so the dumplins dont stick to the bottom, or each other. After 10 minutes of cooking covered, remove the lid and let simmer for about an hour with gentle stirring every 10 or so minutes. These are SOOOOO yummy and delicious!

We're using Cambridge Latin this year but I would consider it to be more of a beginning Latin program and would probably move on to something different if you already have experience with Latin. The great thing about Cambridge, for me, is that it's super easy for me to learn, right along with DS. They have lots of great online resources too. :) HTH--Im subbing just to see other responses so I can get a plan in place for after Cambridge--we're breezing through Stage I right now so hopefully by 7th grade or so we'll be in your same shoes. :)

Not sure if that link works but here is one that may be more helpful: https://ecomm.k12.com/ecommerce/public/index.xhtml IDk what is up with their website but they have changed it and it is not nearly as accessible as it was before. :( you may want to fill out the info form and have them send you an email with all the various links--that's where I'm vetting the ones I've posted. HTH And, fwiw, we used the first R&S English & Spelling, FLL 1-2, WWE 1-2 and I was looking for the same thing when I tried k12. We have enjoyed it a LOT this year and I will be ordering our LA5 materials for next year very soon! :)

We use k12 and it is exactly what you are describing, although in 4th grade we supplement with a cursive workbook as they don't do handwriting at that age. They do have handwriting in te younger grades though. We use k12 independently & bought materials only for $120, shipped. It is a bit more expensive in the younger grades but not by much. You do notneed to purchase the "online" portion which is $23/mo as all it os is a schedule and honestly, I'd rather plan it out myself and save myself $276/year. ;)

Natural Family Planning???
rootsnwings replied to Mommy to monkeys's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We tried the NFP thing after my 2nd ds was born--worked great for about 12 months until I spontaneously ovulated twice in one month! Enters Julie. :) Now I have an IUD and love it. We will probably try for another baby later next year but NOT until Julie is out of diapers and drastically cuts down nursing. I reeeeeally don't want 2 in diapers or tandem nursers again!!! My advise, do not rely on NFP if you really don't want another baby right now. -
Debating LA for to-be 5th grader
rootsnwings replied to momto2Cs's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
I have no experience with the programs you mentioned but wantedto recommend k12 for language arts, if you haven't already looked at them. We're using LA4 for my ds9 (will be 10 in a week) and be rePly loves it. I love it because it's ALL THERE. I don't have to supplement with anything and feel that all of it is very rigorous and thorough. I'm very glad I found this option & will be sticking w/ k12 for LA next year as well. We just bought the materials this year since none of the work is online, just the schedule. It was $120 for materials, shipped, and that includes all teachers manuals, worktexts for spelling, literature, language skills and mechanics, grammar, composition & vocabulary, plus all the readers, novels, fiction & non-fiction he'd need for the literature program for the full year. -
6th Grade Secular Science Curriculum
rootsnwings replied to mtomseth's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Don't forget to check out Exploration Education for physical science. My ds is very much looking forward to this one and I think we'll do the intermediate level in grade 6. DS9/almost 10 is working through a Snap Circuts set for our science right now & he really enjoys it! We will definately be doing another set of these during the summer! :) He is a VERY hands-on/mechanical thinker so I'm really looking for programs that incorperate lots of hands-on activity. I'm subbing to this b/c I have the same concerns about the RSO-Chem that I'd planned for next year (grade 5) & would be interested in a more logic-stage level chemistry program if there is one available. -
Train table?
rootsnwings replied to MorganClassicalPrep's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Our train table has been a great investment for our family. We got it for ds3's 1st Christmas and he and dd1 play with it ALL the time. DS9 uses it as a table for his legos and puzzles. We paid $40 for ours on craigslist and it is super nice! :) we already had tons of trains & track from when ds9 was obsessed as a toddler.
