  1. Be sure to check measurements--every measurement--very carefully to ensure that it will fit in your space. I bought 2 arm chairs that were way too deep for my living room and 2 client chairs for my office that sit a wee bit low. I checked width for both but not depth or seat height. I ended up giving away the arm chairs, but clients in my office just have to get used to looking up at me because the chairs are otherwise perfect. Wayfair is good that you can filter by measurements.
  2. Are you SURE that's not the point? Because I get the feeling that it is very much the point--the implication being that this religious, possibly even Christian, woman is denying the Holocaust, so this is just a reminder that not knowing anything about this particular movie doesn't mean she does not know about and even grieve the Holocaust. Of course she could be a wild-eyed Holocaust denier, but not knowing Schindler's List doesn't make her one.
  3. I pressure-washed a polyester (but big and, therefore, expensive) rug last weekend, not knowing if it would work but figuring I had nothing to lose. It took 4 days to dry in my garage, but we put it back in last night, and it worked! It is 90% as good as new--one corner could have used some more attention, but it's really hard to see that when it's holding 500 gallons of water. This rug sits under my breakfast room table and between the 3 doors we use to go in and out of the house, so it gets a ton of traffic from dirty outside feet. I feel like I saved $300+. Professional cleaning would have cost over $200; a new rug would have been closer to $400; keeping it in this condition was not a viable option. Now I am looking around to see what else I can pressure wash. . .
  4. My daughter moved out of an apartment in May and was billed for reglazing the tub--the original tub that was installed in the 1940s. I was livid, naturally, and sent them a sternly-worded email citing the local landlord-tenant ordinance about normal wear and tear. That was the end of that. I hate apartment managers, and this experience there is exactly why we bought her a townhome to live in while she attends grad school. It costs less than apartment rent when all is said and done.
  5. Just wanted y'all to know how inspiring these threads are. I've never been particularly frugal, but when my husband (who does the grocery shopping now, from my list) came home earlier this summer with chicken breasts that were $7.50/pound, I flipped out and got to work. Now I look at what I've spent over the years just by not paying attention and am appalled. I started a running list of the expenses I've cut and refer to it at least weekly to see what else I can add. I do not yet have much to contribute to this thread (I will add a question below, though); I just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration. Now for my question: has anyone who has USAA car insurance used their safe driver app? It promises discounts of up to 30%, which would be significant (4 drivers, 5 cars). We've all installed it, but we are still in our 14-day learning period, so I don't know how it will translate to actual discounts. It definitely makes me leave my phone alone at stop lights, though. One other thing--we switched to T Mobile 5G internet ($50/month) and are saving $30/month over Comcast, plus we got a month free.
  6. How about putting foil, etc. on a rack inside the cabinet door, like this? I have a clear plastic bin on the inside of one of my cabinet doors to hold dishwasher pods. I refill it from a bigger container that is farther away. You can get pull-out shelves that are made to go under a sink. I don't use them because I don't really need the room, but they look like they would be great if your plumbing permits. For your laundry room, if you just want the shelf to look cuter, you can get a wood(-ish) shelf cover so it looks like a floating shelf. But there are tons of blogs and Instagram posts on cute laundry room makeovers.
  7. We are of the "as long as you live under my roof" persuasion, meaning that, barring a good reason, we go to church Sunday mornings. Bible study or weeknight events are entirely optional and always have been. We have had two international students living with us (still have 1) for the last couple of years, and the expectation was always that they would go to church with us also. My son changed denominations his senior year of high school, and that was a complete non-issue. We went with him a few times, but he mostly went by himself. He still attends church near his college campus. One of my daughters attended off and on while in college but is now attending regularly. One does not, so I am 2/3 in continuing church attendance. We never had a kid make a stink about not wanting to go. Even my international kids attend willingly, and they did not in their home countries.
  8. I made homemade marshmallows a couple of times when my kids were little. They were delicious (I like marshmallows) and not hard. I did not even own a stand mixer at the time, so I certainly did not burn one out. BUT--they smell HORRID for a few minutes. Not after they are finished, but as you add the gelatin, it smells like I would imagine horses' hooves smell in their natural state. I used a Martha Stewart recipe because I saw her made them on her show once, back when that was a thing, and she definitely did not mention the smell. I never made them again because no one else in my family or extended family likes marshmallows. Weirdos. . ..
  9. Minority opinion: I would cash it. So what if she thinks it makes her entitled to your help? She thinks that already. So what if she thinks it makes you a money-grubbing B? She probably already thinks that also. I would just continue not answering her calls and enjoy the gift.
  10. Assuming your son is more than 10 years younger than you, selecting him as your joint annuitant of a pension payment will implicate the MDIB ("minimum distribution incidental benefit") rules, which are designed to ensure that retirement benefits are not used primarily for post-death benefits. Different plans handle this different ways. Some will not let you name a non-spousal joint annuitant who is more than 10 years younger. Some will limit the survivorship percentage to something less than 100% (it would be significantly less with as big an age gap as you probably have with your son). And regardless of this option, most pension plans will not let you designate a non-spousal beneficiary unless you live to your retirement date, so if you die before your benefits begin, your spouse would be the only potential beneficiary. If you are counting on this, please triple-check with the plan sponsor.
  11. Theragun usually has a good Black Friday special if you get on their mailing list.
  12. If the bacon gives off a lot of grease, I drain it about half-way through, just tip it up and drain most of the grease into a bowl. I flip mine sometimes if it is thick. I bake at 400, not on the convection setting. It makes way less mess in the oven. I don't have a vent hood over my stove, so the oven is better at keeping the bacon smell from permeating the kitchen.
  13. Well, this one, IT's Confidence in a Cleanser, is $29/5 oz. (20% off right now, and it goes on sale frequently), but it will remove tinted sunscreen. I used it when I wore IT's tinted sunscreen. It worked very, very well.
  14. I hope you can fix it. But if you can't, you can probably take it to the local dump yourself. We dump stuff all the time, and it costs $8.50 for whatever will fit in the back of a truck. It is done by weight, but a pick-up truck does not hold more than the maximum weight. Also, reach out to the seller and ask if he has had this problem before. Maybe he has, and it is an easy fix.
  15. I have two Latino students (Central American) who have lived with me for the last 2 years, and one of them, and all of their friends, have pierced ears. I can't tell you if it helps with girls or not, but I can tell you that none of them has ever suffered from a lack of female attention. Their general cuteness, athleticism and charm probably contribute, but they all have very cute girlfriends.
  16. Doesn't regular V-8 have a ton of salt? I loved V-8 when I was a kid. Okay, Google says 640 mg sodium.
  17. If anyone shops at Publix, our local Publixes (sp?) have a coupon in their flyer for $10 off of a $50 gas card with a $50 grocery purchase. If you don't have the flyer, you can print it off online. We split our shopping into two trips because Publix #1 was out of something anyway so we could get it twice.
  18. Name all the words you can think of that begin with F, etc., in 60 seconds. To make my kid who struggled with reading comprehension learn to see things in her head, I would give her a number or a word and have her repeat it to me backwards. 342 vs. 243, read vs. daer. We played it in the car, and it very much seemed to help. It worked very well for her.
  19. I looked at this pretty extensively for my kids a couple of years ago and found that all of the pre-paid, reloadable gift cards had pretty high fees. Like you, I had real concerns about giving my kids either debit cards attached to my account or credit cards with my limit. I ended up with youth checking accounts tied to my checking account. I can transfer money into their accounts instantly (and have, on more than one occasion, gotten a call from my son saying he is in line to pay for something and doesn't have enough money, and I can get money in before he gets to the front of the line). We bank with USAA, Truist and a local bank. USAA and Truist both had free, no-minimum balance required, checking accounts just for this purpose.
  20. The people who answer the phone for Hilton now are so, so rude. The people at the actual hotels (that you can't call any more, as best as I can tell) are not, but whomever is staffing their call centers needs to stop hiring angry people.
  21. Are you also staying the night, so you just need super-early check-in, or do you just want to stay for the day? If the latter, there is a website for that (of course there is): dayuse.com. I've never used it, so no personal experience.
  22. OdoBan, which is a spray you can get from Home Depot and the like. I've used the pebbles linked above, and they also work better than you would think. In a closed space like a cabinet, they probably work really well. I learned a lot about odor elimination from a couple of traumatic events: a freezer (full of meat)failure, and the time a rat crawled into my car and died in the dash. Fun times. A rotten potato is far less dramatic.
  23. My husband joined to pay for college, and it worked out well for him. I did not know him at the time, but he still speaks relatively fondly of it and frequently recommends it as a college financing option. I benefited from his not having undergraduate debt when we got married, so it gets two thumbs up from me as well. He lived in southern Louisiana at the time, so the temps could be brutal, but he survived.
  24. I know tons of kids who are going or have gone there. It is kind of a hot school right now amongst my son's peer group, i.e., CO '22 from a small'ish Christian high school in an Atlanta suburb. My daughter (CO '18) had several friends from church go there, and one of my very best friends of 30 years is an alum. It is not for everyone, I'm sure, but everyone I know who has gone there loved it.
  25. My daughter who just started OT school this summer has a pretty significant back injury, so when she registered for OT school, she also registered with the disability accommodations office in the event that she ever needs accommodations with her field work or whatever. I had no idea she was doing this; I have no idea how she knew to do it. But she got an email today that she'd been awarded a significant scholarship through the accommodations office. She has in-state tuition, and it is pretty close to covering 3 semesters of her tuition (summer is a semester for her program). She does not know whether it is renewable, but even if it is for one year of the three--I feel like the heavens just opened up and dumped a pile of money on her. There are almost no scholarships available for OT school, and she had no idea that there might be money from the disability office. So, here's your tip for the day: if your student is eligible--sign up!
