Math contests similar to the AMC 8?
Swimmer1112 replied to Not_a_Number's topic in General Education Discussion Board
How did you study for these exams? I am trying to figure out how many hours my son should dictate to studying for AMC 10 next year. He almost made AIME, missed the cut off by 0.5 points. -

Quick Personal Finance List for a Senior?
Swimmer1112 replied to MommaBea's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
PayPal, Venmo are a must. My dd uses them for most of the transactions. I also taught my kids about appreciating and depreciating assets. How to read bills and interest rates. What affects their credit history. How much to save for retirement, emergency fund, and how to set aside for want vs needs. -

Going to the dentist or ortho in the time of Covid?
Swimmer1112 replied to mommyoffive's topic in The Chat Board
We didn’t go to the dentist for 14 months. My son went 2 weeks ago and I waited the car. They had 4 kids in the office at a time, normally they have 10 kids in the exam area. I went last week pre-vaccination and they only have 2 patients in at a time. It’s one way in and one way out of the office to minimize contact. I felt very safe. The staff and dentist had mask, gloves, and shields. I rinsed with mouth wash before they started. -
We are considering moving to Texas. I am just starting to research. We have a rising 8th grader. I have some questions about homeschooling in Texas. What is it like homeschooling in Texas? Are there laws or state regulations that I should look into? Do you need to let the school district or state know that you are homeschooling? In California, we have to file an affidavit, is there something similar that is required in Texas? What are the high school graduation requirements?

We have friends, who plan to go back to PS because the UCs favor public and private school kids for admissions. They have programs like Local Path and State Path that puts public and private school kids, who graduate in the top 9% of their high school, in front of the admissions line. https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/freshman/california-residents/local-path.html -
Would a fast learner be considered precocious? For example my niece is a fast learner, she started the piano at 9 and by 12 she was playing advanced pieces, by Tchaikovsky and Chopin. She just one of those kids who just picks things up really quickly when she is interested. I always thought she was gifted but I’ve people talking about her as a precocious child.

Treating Asthma? Especially Cough Variant Asthma
Swimmer1112 replied to JumpyTheFrog's topic in The Chat Board
My son has cough variant asthma. He takes his inhaler about 20 minutes before swim practice or any hard exercise. It prevents his coughing fits during exercise. -
Me too, I’m going to take my time. 😊

Question for Adults with ADHD
Swimmer1112 replied to wendyroo's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My dh has adhd and he has always said that he wished his parents let him fail when he was in middle school or high school. They have always provided scaffolding and came to the rescued, by advocating with the school and teachers when he didn’t turn in an assignment or didn’t finish on time. He had to learn the consequences of not caring about finishing his work in college and it was a hard lesson. It took him 6 years to finish college after failing classes. -
My son is interested in F=ma competition, does anyone have experience with this competition? I was looking at AoPS F=ma class and the one at Awesome Math as possible classes for him to take. Are there other resources or classes I should look at?

Swimmer1112 replied to ChickaDeeDeeDee's topic in Accelerated Learner Board
The kids that qualify for USAMO that attend my son’s math circle have either gone through all the AoPS classes and are currently taking Woot classes or they have gone through all the Awesome math classes. -
A self-directed IRA (SDIRA) is a variation on a traditional IRA in which you can hold a variety of alternative investments, including real estate, that regular IRAs can't own. Looks like they are planning to help purchase the house and put that investment into their IRA. Instead of taking the money out, this can be just as risky
