My concern is that co-signing a loan will tie your parents to this family financially. My cousin co-signed a loan for a friend and when his friend defaulted on the loan, DC was held responsible, it destroyed his credit.

Swimmer1112 replied to Allthebest's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
math acceleration paths that I’ve seen are 1. take Algebra 2 and Geometry together. 2. Skip Pre-calculus and go straight into AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC 3. take Pre-calculus over the summer 4. skip AP Calculus AB go straight into AP Calculus BC my daughter took Pre-calculus over the summer after 10 th grade and went into AP Calculus BC in 11th. This allowed her to take 2 math classes at the CC in 12th. -

Ugh, DH just found out that his Uncle pass of Covid this afternoon. This is a horrible year so far, DH lost 3 members of his extended family in the last 10 weeks. They all live in Los Angeles. His uncle (70) had no pre-existing conditions. He was sick for 6 weeks before his heart gave out.

DS was 50in at 10. He was a premie and had a growth delay. But now appears to be sprouting up, ds 13 and 64 -
It is a rapid test location and he did say that he has had several people tell him at the checkout that they had a positive test result but were asymptomatic, so it fine for them to be out.

I tried hanging it on the knob under the kitchen sink, but our dog just comes by and starts licking it.

On top of the fridge, I can’t find a better place for it. But you are right, just yuck

I hope you are right about the things resettling, but every time I talk to DH, I just get depressed. He is working with several companies that developed the Covid rapid test and keeps telling me how they are planning to ramp up production, because they are expecting a greater need for testing in the future, because of variants

My nephew works at a grocery store and there is a covid test center in their parking lot, he was telling us he would see people go in for a covid test, then walk into the store right after they are finished.

Math After AP Calculus (and Where?)
Swimmer1112 replied to shburks's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
This was in an upper division Electrical Engineering class, Probability and Statistics class. The class went over the topics in AoPS inter C&P for the first 5 weeks and the covered the topics with Calc for the last 5 weeks. I agree it’s under-appreciated. The average on the midterms were 30%. This is one of the hardest classes in the program. But I think it’s hard because many of the students never had exposure to the probability and stat before the class -
Math After AP Calculus (and Where?)
Swimmer1112 replied to shburks's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
My dd is an engineering major and she said that one of the most helpful classes she took in high school was AoPS Inter. Counting and Probability. Her upper division electric engineering classes covered the whole year of this inter. C&P in 5 weeks. She was one of a few students that understand what was going on in the class and was an to get an A. -
LOL, I just saw 6 Facebook post warning of coyotes from last night. From all the Ring videos that were uploaded, I think I can follow the coyotes path through our neighborhood. We live right next to a canyon and I’ve seen coyotes in my backyard every morning for the last 20 years.

I think it depends on the background of the parents. I always thought my kids would look very Asian, I am Chinese and DH is Norwegian. So we always thought our kids would be darker coloring and brown eyes. To our amazement our first had green eyes and blonde hair. My Norwegian MIL was elated that her grandchild would look just like her with blonde hair. When my second child came along and was much darker, black hair and had brown eyes. The off hand comments we got from DH’s family was amazing, like “Oh I hope she doesn’t get mistaken for Mexican” “Such a shame she’s so dark” or “Such a shame she doesn’t look like her sister, S is so beautiful in comparison.” DH stood up to his family and told them that the racism stops or they would have no contact with us or the grandkids.

How far/often do you drive for kid’s activities?
Swimmer1112 replied to Calizzy's topic in The Chat Board
Is there a way you can carpool? When my kids activities are more than 20 minutes away we try to set up a carpool, each family drives one way or each family drives one day. -
I am sorry to hear that your son didn’t have a better experience. My son started attending the AoPS in San Diego in the middle of 5th grade and our experience was completely different. Ds didn’t know about math competitions until we start going to AoPS. For us AoPS sparked his interest and love of math. He met some good friends in his AoPS classes, who got him interested in competitions and encourage him to join the math circle, the following year. I am wondering if it has to do with the instructors because he took all of his classes with the assistant director and she was very good at assigning seats and grouped the kids by age, so they would have better group interactions. Even on Zoom last year I would hear laughing during his class. She left the academy this year to work in the corporate office and I can tell that his class is not the same this year with his current instructor, not much social interaction, just work. Definitely not as fun.

EMF has what you are looking for, their first class is free because of Covid. My son took their classes a few years ago and I remember he was going through a lot of symbolic logic. https://www.elementsofmathematics.com

My son loves the academy, he has taken both online and academy and enjoys the social interaction at the academy.
